Manganite - Ilfeld, Nordhausen, Harz Mts, Thuringia, Germany (type locality)

Terrific cluster of crystals from the type locality. All the columnar crystals are nicely terminated, highly lustrous, and possess the classic striations parallel to the c-axis. You won’t often find a Manganite of such quality for the price. THESE CLASSIC SHARP CRYSTALS ARE ALL OLD SPECIMENS, COLLECTED FROM ONE FABULOUS SEAM in the 1880s

An extremely rare specimen! On this piece, hausmannite has replaced the previous generation of manganite crystals. It is hard to get anything over thumbnail size of this old classic.

A highly unusual specimen with SHARP, 1mm manganite crystals showing excellent form and jet black lustre, draping over a cluster of gem red , cherry-colored rhodochrosites. This would be from finds circa 1980, and is of a rare quality for the association

This specimen is a rich example of the classic, long-gone manganite crystals from this important locality (which produced best of species by any reckoning). They all came from a small, aberrant, ultra-rich vein in the 1880's. It features numerous sharp, extremely lustrous, terminated crystals to 3.6 cm all splaying out to make a dramatic frontal display face. The lustre is high and the isolation and dimensionality make this large piece unusual. There is one repair, clean, to a minor central crystal, but other than that the piece has a dozen others. Lastly, a small amount of barite matrix acts as a welcome, and unusual, accent. Comes with custom lucite display base which mounts it rather elegantly, I think. Moreover, I have seen inferior pieces at the same price recently; so all things considered, I believe it to be a relative bargain. Joe Budd photos.

I had never seen a replacement of manganite by hausmannite before and would have expected it from South Africa, but to find it from this old German find really surprised me. Let me say right off that most of these crystals ARE unterminated, but that is why you can own this rare old German pseudomorph for under $500. Despite the damage, the specimen shows very distinct, well-formed crystals to 1.8 cm.

A hefty chunk of manganite ore, with a lable noting "near Laramie, Wyoming" which I found must surprising. No locale for manganite in Wyoming is listed on Mindat, but that does not mean it is impossible and so I took a gamble and bought it. Maybe others cna place it more precisely?

Stunning, elongated, unusual manganite crystals , especially good for the locality where such large crystals are seldom found. Brilliant and pristine display face, slight contact atop only.

An elegant cluster of unusual, thick, blocky manganite crystals splayign like a flower. Gray and color-challenged, yes, but still a pretty darned good manganite especially for a manganese mine that produces few manganite specimens! Complete on 3 sides, sawed flat on the back (or a flat conteact, I am not sure which)

A very complex aggregate growth of slender, curving manganite crystals , reaching from top to bottom on this specimen. More pronounced curvature and 3-dimensionality in person! This is an excellent specimen of manganite from a manganese mine that really doesn't produce much pure manganite , of specimen calibre. It is more impressive, and quite hefty, in person!

This specimen is unique in my experience in that I have never seen a larger manganite crystal from this locality (which produced best of species by any reckoning, in a small, aberrant, ultra-rich vein in the 1880's), nor a floater of such size. It is terminated on both ends and is remarkably free of damage. The terminations, it is true, are not the usual simple basal termination but rather are complex and multifaceted; reflecting from any number of microterminations making up the aggregate termination. It is really quite shocking - when I saw it in the collection, I at first mistook it for a Peruvian hubnerite because we really are not used to thinking in terms of such size for euhedral crystals of this species! Comes with custom lucite display base which mounts it rather elegantly, I think. It is also pristine and complete all around, save for one small notch contact, and is of higher lustre in person as well.

A MAJOR locality Manganite that has unusually blocky crystals for the locale, up to 1.7 cm, with razor-sharp edges and excellent luster. The striations, slight overlap, and the way that these sit on the Goethite matrix make this exceptionally aesthetic as a whole, for a black mineral. Certainly one of the best Manganites I have seen from this well-known location, it has been in Marty's private collection for over a decade since a big find here in the 1990s

This lovely Rhodo has excellent luster and a very juicy, cherry-red color. It is sparklya nd bright, in part due to a druse on some crystal tips of submillimeter quartz, deposited atop. Many of the Rhodo scalenohedrons, which reach up to 1 cm in length, have this quartz cap which makes them look like white sugar was sprinkled atop. Some of the terminations are also sprinkled with glittering black, metallic crystals of manganite which increases the visual interest greatly. Overall, thus, we have the manganite and the quartz accents on an already superbly cherry-red rhodo, and the result is a VERY unique and choice specimen! It is a miniature that stands out from the crowd (not that there are many to go around these days, as this was mined in 1979-1982). While it is difficult to find a good rhodochrosite from these finds today, they DO turn up time to time on the market. However, usually they are price prohibitive to own, and I have seen few as unique in style as this combination specimen (at a reasonable price)
