Brilliantly lustrous and gemmy, 2 cm crystal, sitting wonderfully on matrix! This is the BEST aesthetic quality you could ever ask for in an axinite! It is pristine save for an infinitesimal chip on the back edge, and qualifies as competition quality in my book.

GEMS-113 - Axinite - $ 250
Pakistan
thumbnail, 9.7 x 8.4 mm ;3.32 carats

Axinite - PakistanAxinite - Pakistan

Axinite is typically considered a collector's stone. This particular gem is a lovely golden-brown / purple color gem with a Cushion cut. Axinite rarely forms in crystals that are gemmy or thick enough for faceting. It is indeed a very rare gem considering that rough is extremely difficult to find. To find a gem over 3 carats is very impressive. Axinite gems are rarely completely clean, so inclusions are accepted by most collectors and dealers. This stone is has some slight inclusions, but shows some trichroism as it does a change color when rotated in different directions. Axinite is actually hard enough that it can be worn in jewelry, though it is a bit brittle.

Axinite - Puiva Mine, Dodo, Urals, Russia

This beautiful pair of intergrown crystals have excellent gemminess, color and luster. There is one small area on the back from which a small Axinite is missing. This is of the quality from the famous pockets of the 1980’s - and the mine is no longer producing them. Even with a bit of minute edge wear along the edges, this is a fine and attractive Axinite that displays well but is priced accordingly low due to the small dings - it IS a value, though , for one with such other qualities as you see.

3.2 x 2.2 x 0.2 cm. A KILLER toenail of Russian axinite! These crystals are incredibly gemmy for the species, and sharp as razors. The smoky crystals have a slightly purplish tone to them. Each of the crystals measures about 2 cm across.

10.1 x 6.9 x 3.7 cm. A rich old-timer specimen of axinite from the Swiss Alps that passed through two notable collections (the Wein collection and that of Eric Asselborn) before ending up in these auctions. The razor-sharp crystals measure up to 2.5 cm. Though these are very easily damaged due to the thinness of their terminations, this specimen is in superb condition, despite its age.

11.5 x 8.9 x 8.9 cm. A BIG, super-RICH specimen of axinite from Russia! These fanned blades are piled up over an inch-and-a-half thick on the matrix! There is some snow-white accenting calcite in one place. The crystals here are not large relative to other axinite specimens, but the profusion of them more than makes up for it.
