This Magnesite is a superb crystal with perfect rhombic form, great clarity, and glassy luster. It was obtained from Carlos Barbosa, now sadly deceased, at a Tucosn show. That says it all.

Uvite and magnesite are a classic combo from this Brazilian locality. Usually, the magnesite merely "accents" the uvites. But here, you have at one end of the specimen a group of lustrous, deep red uvites (the more rare color, I should add), and at the other end, a large, razor-sharp rhomb of magnesite that stands out from the smaller ones. This gives the specimen a beautiful balance, I think, and sets it apart from teh more common material that emphasizes only one of the two species.

Uvite, Magnesite, Florencite from Serra das Éguas, Brumado (Bom Jesus dos Meiras), Bahia, Northeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-113439a.jpg]

15.1 x 13.5 x 5.6 cm. This is a specimen of the rare RED uvites (more rare than the greens) from Brumado, on the familiar matrix of sparkly crystalline magnesite rhombs. There are dozens of little crystals here in rich clusters on the large matrix. Absolutely beautiful contrast! The uglier little beige crystals are examples of super-rare florencite, in sharp crystals for the species.

Magnesite from Serra das Éguas, Brumado (Bom Jesus dos Meiras), Bahia, Northeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-117739a.jpg]

9.5 x 7.0 x 6.1 cm. Gorgeous, sharp, gemmy magnesite rhombohedra to 2 cm form a nice small cab. Classic Brumado material! A small florencite crystal measuring 2mm is hiding amongst them, which is a nice bonus.

Uvite, Magnesite from Serra das Éguas, Brumado (Bom Jesus dos Meiras), Bahia, Northeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-118246a.jpg]

6.6 x 3.8 x 1.6 cm. Red uvites are rarer than the greens, and here are two wonderful crystals perched on a contrasting matrix of stark white magnesite (the classic combo from here). The crystals measure just under one centimeter. They show BRILLIANT luster, razor-sharp form and fine transparency. This is a rare find, as uvite is commonly green.

3.8 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm. If I were to give you a lustrous and gemmy 1.2 cm Magnesite rhomb, several smaller but equally gemmy rhombs, and a slew of lesser crystals, then said "have at it," you could not construct a more aesthetic specimen than this one.

6.9 x 4.8 x 2.3 cm. Red uvites are much rarer than the green ones. There are three uvites here, one of them a superb one-centimeter crystal perched at the edge of a matrix covered with crystalline, sparkling magnesite. All three crystals have glassy luster.

7.4 x 5.9 x 3.3 cm. This is an old-timer European one out of the Leithauser collection, and as such is quite rare! It is an aggregate of crystals that are translucent at the center of the specimen, with gemmy crystals with sharp faces ringed around the periphery of the specimen.

7.6 x 4.5 x 2.6 cm. A SUPERB and showy Brumado combination specimen of very glassy and sparkly magnesite crystals richly and beautifully sprinkled with gemmy, dark cherry-red uvite crystals to 5 mm. The HIGHLIGHT of the specimen, though, is the LARGE, 5 mm, orange florencite crystal nicely set between red uvites and glassy, colorless magnesite crystals. Florcencite is a RARE cerium phosphate and this is a large and sharp crystal.

7.4 x 7.1 x 3.1 cm. This is a classic combination from this locality - sharp, gemmy crystals of uvite tourmaline on stark white contrasting magnesite. Of the two colors these take, the red is the rarer one. This fine, glassy, sharp crystal measures 0.7 cm. Under strong light, it shows an intense blood-red gemminess.

11.4 x 9.2 x 3.6 cm. Magnesite is usually seen in small crystals as an "accessory" mineral - when from this locality, particularly, with uvites. But this specimen is a superb specimen in and of itself, with large, lustrous, transparent rhombs of magnesite to over 2 cm, sticking up amongst smaller crystals. The magnesites are razor-sharp. There actually ARE a few little uvites to be seen here, too!

5.7 x 4.5 x 4.4 cm. Here, you have not only wonderful and large magnesite crystals (which usually are overshadowed by the uvites), but fine, lustrous, moss-green uvites as well. The uvites measure to 0.75 cm, and there is a magnesite rhomb that measures over 2 cm along the edge. The magnesites are unusually gemmy!

5.7 x 4.3 x 3.3 cm. A BEAUTIFUL and SHOWY combination specimen of a line of lustrous, sharp, partially gemmy, dark wine-red uvite crystals to 1.4 cm jauntily cresting along the top of matrix covered with glassy and gemmy, colorless magnesite rhombs. EXCELLENT material from the famous Brumado deposit of Brazil. Very few of these have been found in recent years.
