Liddicoatite is a rare tourmaline varietal, seldom found in such large and gemmy crystals as this one. Also, the deep red hue is very fine on this piece: not mottled in color as they often are! The crystal is doubly terminated, with the basal termination having been healed. Translucent, with a rich, rose red color, this specimen of liddicoatite is significantly large and fine. Or it wouldnt have been in Steve's noted gem crystal collection, for a start. I exchanged it from Smale and he obtained it directly from Dr. Federico Pezzotta, in whos ecollection it also resided.

This very rare matrix liddicoatite specimen features a 3.5-cm crystal , doubly-terminated, perched in a matrix of crystallized cleavelandite and quartz. The crystal is very gemmy, so that you can look into it and through most of its depth. The termination is phenomenally sharp. The display aesthetics of this very gemmy, lustrous crystal are great! Rarely do you see one on good matrix, from this classic locale. Older specimen, probably from the early 2000s and not a recent find. Joe Budd photos.

Liddicoatite - Luc Yen, Yenbai (Yen Bai) Province, Vietnam

6.1 x 4.1 x 2.7 cm. These very distinctive tapering compound crystals of tourmaline are well-known from Vietnam, but almost always as standalone crystals. This is a rare MATRIX specimen - and not only that, but the tourmaline itself is exquisite, being complete all around and attached to the matrix in such a way that it is exposed all the way around. All the sub-terminations are complete - the crystal is in extraordinary condition.

3.2 x 0.9 x 0.8 cm. The crystal is complete and terminated, and has fine luster. Collected by Federico Pezzotta and his team a few years ago.

6.5 x 3.0 x 1.6 cm. A large example of the tourmaline variety liddicoatite from a find in 2006, of generally smaller crystals. Analyzed in the labs of Dr. Federico Pezzotta by Dr. Emanuele Marini, this is a true liddicoatite. It has a beautiful, unusual red color to it. The crystal is highly lustrous, and is doubly-terminated as well.

Londonite, Liddicoatite, Microcline - Antsongombato gem mine, FKT Antsentsindrano, Andrembesoa Commune, Betafo District, Vakinankaratra Region, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar

4.8 x 3.8 x 2.9 cm. A superb combination specimen that includes the very rare species, londonite, the cesium-dominant analogue of rhodizite. A gemmy and lustrous, 2.1 cm, sharp londonite crystal with vivid yellow color sits atop a beautifully contrasting, lustrous, cranberry-red liddicoatite crystal on microcline matrix. It is uncommon to see both londonite and liddicoatite in such richness together in a specimen.
