Elbaite, Lepidolite, Albite from Himalaya Mine (Himalaya pegmatite; Himalaya dikes), Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-214766a.jpg]

7.8 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm. A big crystal of bright pink Himalaya Mine tourmaline. This crystal just lights up like neon under good light. That is a natural internal fracture you see running across the middle and not a repair. The top termination is quite fine, with a very small bit of pocket contact in one place on the back edge. The bottom termination is intact (naturally healed), so this is technically a floater. You can see patches of lavender lepidolite decorating the lower portion of the crystal. Weighs 164 grams.

11.3 x 7.6 x 4.9 cm. This specimen features a twinned, bi-terminated montebrasite crystal measuring about 3 x 3 cm, perched in matrix of lepidolite. The crystallized lepidolite is in long tube-like forms. Most unusual matrix and a rare association as far as I have seen. The montebrasite is complete, although partially etched, and sticks up like a breaching whale tail from the matrix for a sharp contrast. The specimen, as a bonus, is rich in globular aggregates of the rare species zanazziite, clustered in and amongst the lepidolite and albite matrix.

12.8 x 8.2 x 7.9 cm. This specimen has two faces, one pretty and one rare. It is a solid chunk of shard quartz, completely re-healed all around and thus a floater, that is draped by thick, brilliant yellow lepidolite clusters all over the topside. The lepidolite is wonderful for this find. As a bonus, on the bottom side, you have a rare mineral species first described from this locality in 2006. Guimaraesite is a newly described complex calcium/zinc/magnesium/iron beryllium phosphate, which comes from an unnamed pegmatite working in this valley. This specimen is a complete floater quartz cluster the size of a large grapefruit, with exception only of one small bit on one side which is contacted. The bottom has rich coating of Guimaraesite in sub-mm spherical crystal clusters.

8.2 x 7.1 x 5.0 cm. A very rare, unique and very showy herderite, tourmaline and lepidolite specimen from Paprok, Afghanistan and the Marty Zinn Collection, #7925. Gemmy, pastel-green, arrowhead-shaped herderite crystals abound on the matrix, which includes very gemmy, green tourmaline crystals to 2.1 cm and very light lavender to tan lepidolite crystals. The dominant 2.8 cm herderite crystal is striking and there is a 5.2 cm horizontal crystal. All of the major herderites are pristine. Herderite is not listed as coming from Afghanistan, but Marty has many direct sources, that very few in the mineral world can hope to obtain. Marty is generally considered to be the preeminent mineral show promoter in the world and thus has early access to many unique finds. The tourmalines appear to be a typical, green Paprok varietal and not like any general Brazilian tourmalines.

Microlite, Lepidolite from Urubu mine (Vulture mine; Uruba mine), Monte Belo, Itinga, Jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-21663a.jpg]

The pictures do not do justice to these shimmering, lustrous, gemmy crystals (to 1.25 cm), perched on contrasting matrix. They have a golden color and internal shimmer that is simply amazing for the species and the locality. I have never seen the like. Neither had Luis Menezes, from whom I bought the best two specimens he had for sale from a very small lot obtained some months ago in Brazil. 6 x 4 x 3.25 cm

8.5 x 2.5 x 1.4 cm. A disruption during growth caused this sizeable crystal of green tourmaline crystal to make a noticeable bend in its center and grow at an oblique angle to it final termination. It is beautifully decorated with lavender lepidolites and platy albites. Actually has a pink core, which can be seen under strong light.

6.0 x 4.3 x 3.5 cm. A beautiful, gemmy and lustrous topaz crystal with magnificent blue color complimented by a "cap" of pearlescent lepidolite from recent finds at Itinga, Brazil (reworking an old district with modern equipment for missed finds). The very glassy crystal has a textbook chisel termination and is undamaged, save for the contacting at the base. A classic topaz with great blue color saturation.

Lepidolite from Virgem da Lapa, Jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-227475a.jpg]

5.0 x 4.5 x 3.0 cm. An excellent and showy cluster of lavender, intergrown, knobby, pseudohexagonal lepidolite crystals from the pegmatites at Virgem da Lapa, Brazil. The broken faces on the backside reveal the beautiful, silvery-lavender lustre of the crystals. Considering that lepidolite is usually either sheety like common mica or bearing a dull translucency, this is quite remarkable to see. Ex. Mullane Collection.

6.0 x 1.4 x 1.0 cm. A pristine, gemmy and lustrous, dark green tourmaline with a sharp pyramidial termination and aesthetically wrapped in glossy, lavender lepidolite from recent finds at the Pederniera Mine of Brazil. There are three naturally healed fractures on this beautiful tourmaline.

13.0 x 7.3 x 7.2 cm. This attractive matrix specimen of classic Peech tourmaline is perched in sparkling crystallized lepidolite matrix. The beautiful, pastel colored crystal measures 6 cm and sticks up dramatically.

4.1 x 1.4 x 0.8 cm. A fine, doubly terminated, gemmy, lustrous and pristine bi-colored tourmaline from Peech, Afghanistan. The pink, pyramidal termination grades downward to pleasing apple-green to a pinacoidal termination with a pink core. The sidecar crystal and part of the main crystal are interestingly clothed in off-white lepidolite microcrystals.
