Very fine doubly-terminated Ilvaite with superb luster and form. This is the best lustre and jet black hue I have ever seen on one of these guys! A bit of Quartz attached near one termination.

4JD38 - Calcite (fluor.) on Ilvaite - $ 150 SOLD
Dal'negorsk, Primorskiy Kray, Russia
miniature, 3.6 x 3.3 x 2.9 cm

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Four beautiful and different calcite crystals perched very aesthetically on a plate of glistening Ilvaite. The largest calcite is twinned, and all have a light orange fluorescence. Calcites this lovely and this reasonable are hard to find. Like little jewels!!!

These are the most robust, large ilvaite crystals ever seen - even this piece is fatter and thicker than any ilvaite from other localities I had seen before. It is particularly well-balanced for the size, with gorgeous, jet-black ilvaite with good luster. This is complete all around 360-degrees, and has the complex multiple-termination style that is the less common of several habits from this new find. Small green quartz is associated at the base. This was found in the fall of 2011.

This combination specimen features a showy ilvaite leaping out from a nesting of green, hedenbergite-included quartz crystals. The ilvaite is nearly complete all around, with just a few small contacts in the back. The ilvaite termination is sharp and tapering, also nearly complete (just a few contact spots in back side), and is nicely freestanding. Although some of the quartzes are broken, they provide a highly desirable (and rarely seen) color contrast, and have come to be considered the classic association for the best matrix ilvaite from this mine. This piece is very dramatic, in person, and is an excellent example for the new finds which, despite a few little bits of damage, really looks like it would be nearly priceless if from any previous ilvaite locale we have seen.

This combination specimen features a spray of lustrous, showy ilvaite leaping out from a nesting of green, hedenbergite-included quartz crystals. The ilvaite is complete all around, with jcrystals to 4 cm in height (though they go down a bit deeper into a pocket). The quartz provides a highly desirable (and rarely seen) color contrast, and have come to be considered the classic association for the best matrix ilvaite from this mine. This piece is very dramatic, in person, and is an excellent example for the new finds here

This dramatic piece is from a special pocket found in early 2011, and to date not equaled from the mine. Many people are saying that these arsenopyrites, for luster and sharpness, rank among the world's best of species. In person, they have a pure silver color and a sparkle to them caused by minute surface detailing, like the skin of a lizard but much, much finer in scale. On this piece, the arsenopyrite is displayed dramatically upright, atop a natural pedestal of green hedenbergite and black ilvaite.

This is a fine American ilvaite on matrix of competition quality! Jutting out of a matrix of 1 cm black ilvaite crystals and 1 cm quartz crystals, is a large, equant ilvaite, rising roughly 3cm x 3cm. This crystal has a matte luster and is extremely well formed with a broad, classic termination. While the mine has produced a fair number of these specimens in the past, this is one of the best I have seen and is certainly among the best for its size, on matrix, barring only specimens from Dalnegorsk and perhaps a few from old finds in Italy. Admittedly, ilvaite is often rather unappreciated as a species but it shouldn't be - good xls are darned uncommon..

This unusual combination specimen features clusters of 1-cm crystals of white calcite and colorless quartz contrasting with several splendent, black, ilvaite crystals to about 1 inch. All of this sits on a matrix of massive hedenbergite (sawed flat on the bottom to stand). All of the upright, major ilvaite crystals are fully and magnificently terminated, with the only damage confined to the periphery and thus to the less significant sideways-pointing crystals at the base. Ilvaites of this quality came out richly in the late 80s and the 90s but have since completely evaporated from teh market. Now a Russian classic!

3.4 x 2.0 x 1.6 cm. A sharp, euhedral, complete all-around and pristine, chocolate-brown ilvaite crystal from a classic Greek locality - Seriphos Island. The crystal has a nice chisel termination and has good lustre. An excellent and good-sized crystal from a historic locality. Ex. George Elling Collection.

3.4 x 3.4 x 2.3 cm. These calcites were hard to photograph. In person, they are INTENSELY gemmy, with high luster and very subtle striations on the faces. They sit beautifully on a carefully-trimmed, contrasting matrix of black crystalline ilvaite.

4.6 x 3.4 x 2.6 cm. A cluster of super-lustrous, sharp compound crystals of ilvaite, on a sparing matrix, from Dalnegorsk. The crystals have a pleasing "cross" form, and as you can see, this piece is remarkably aesthetic and exceptional for a mini of this species (from one of the world’s great localities).
