13.3 x 10.9 x 5.6 cm. A dazzling combo piece from the Daye Mine! The pyrite crystal that crowns one end of the specimen is a total knockout - just stunning in its luster, form, and the way it sits up on the matrix like a jewel. On the other side of the specimen is a silky quartz crystal, wrapped with calcites and chocolate-brown hubeites. There is so much going on here - all of it pretty! Pyrite is very unusual for the locality and even more so in combination with all the other minerals there. This is a rare quality, in combination, and not just a combination if that makes sense.

7.2 x 6.4 x 3.9 cm. A rich and sparkly specimen of inesite from China (a mineral mostly till now known from the Kalahari Manganese localities of South Africa). There are two hues here, a reddish brown and an umber shade - both once thought to be inesite when collected. The darker brown is actually the new species hubeite, for which this is the type and only locality.

7.1 x 3.7 x 2.3 cm. Hubeite is an ULTRA-RARE silicate, approved as a species in 2000 and found ONLY at the Daye Mine in China. This is a SUPER RICH and VERY SHOWY specimen, festooned with light to dark brown, well terminated crystals on both sides and beautifully complimented by a matrix of glassy, tabular apophyllite crystals. A superb specimen of this very rare species.

5.5 x 4.0 x 2.7 cm. An EXCELLENT and aesthetic combination specimen from the famous Daye Mine of China, which includes the ULTRA-RARE silicate hubeite. This showy specimen is highlighted by an angled bowtie of lustrous, salmon-colored inesite crystals in the front of the piece. The bowtie is 3.0 cm long. The glassy, quartz crystal matrix is richly and attractively covered with dark brown bundles of hubeite crystals to 0.5 cm and creme-colored apophyllite microcrystals. Outstanding combo material from this famous mine.

Quartz, Hubeite, Pyrite - Ezhou Prefecture, Hubei Province, China

14.4 x 12.9 x 6.9 cm. A large, ornate and quite unusual Chinese specimen out of the J.R. Glover Collection. The quartz crystals contain little black inclusions of hubeite, a strange sorosilicate mineral only recently identified (found first at the Daye Mine, also in Hubei Province, and named after this province). At some point the quartz crystals here were sprinkled with these little black hubeites, and then growth continued, so they are now enclosed under thin sheet of quartz (rather than being on the surface of the crystals) as inclusions. Shiny golden pyrite adds an attractive accent to the specimen.

A sparkly coating of hubeite, apophyllite, and secondary quartz microcrystals makes this large quartz point really spectacular! The photos do no accurately show how sparkly and just darned beautiful this specimen is. A few inesite clusters add an extra accent. NOT your average quartz crystal! The sparkles cover 4 faces of the 6-sided quartz point. The other two faces are normal, glassy quartz as you''d expect. 14 x 6 x 5 cm

A gorgeous spray of highly lustrous and translucent pink inesite crystals that looks just like a floral bouquet. Hubeite crystals are scattered about and one cluster "ties" the inesite bundle together. Beautiful and artistic! 2.7 x 1.8 x 1.0 cm

Beautiful floater specimen of inesite completely coated by sparkling, transparent apophyllite crystals on the display face (the back is plain ol inesite which is also not bad!). Small brown crystals of hubeite are also present. SUPERB large thumbnail or small miniature-sized specimen from 2001 finds 3.5 x 1.4 x 1

Inesite on Hubeite - Fengjiashan Mine (Daye Copper mine), Edong, Daye County, Hubei Province, China

Inesite from this mine in China, starting after about 2005, set a new record for quality in the species. This is a specimen from the early finds here, which was gobbled up along with most of the first production by an earlybird to the scene, collector (and hoarder) Steve Smale. He kept it after selling off many other pieces, as a superb example for aesthetics. It features a 4-cm-tall bowtie-shaped rosette of crystals, that is perched freestanding up and off of a contrasting matrix. The matrix is coated by the rare species hubeite, for which this is the type locality. Overall, for the size, this is one of the more aesthetic and balanced specimens we have had. It was exchanged to me in 2008 by Dr. Smale.Joe Budd Photos
