Deep red crystals of zincite along the top of a hefty matrix specimen, fronted with bright veins of native copper (lower-mid right side of specimen and top-middle photo). The zincite crystals are in a calcite vein with dispersed purplish hodgkinsonite. 9 x 8 x 5 cm.
MD-21570 - Hodgkinsonite - - Archived Franklin Mine, Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA small cabinet, 8 x 5 x 4 cm
Small but very sharp crystals of this rare species in an unusually large matrix specimen! Some crystals are darker because they are included by another mineral and are apparently called "black hodgkinsonite" by the locals. 8 x 5 x 4 cm
MD-256920 - Hodgkinsonite - - Archived Franklin Mine, Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA miniature, 4.9 x 4.4 x 3.2 cm.
4.9 x 4.4 x 3.2 cm. Hodgkinsonite is a very rare manganese, zinc silicate found only in the Franklin Mining District of New Jersey. The sculptural franklinite with a vein of willemite matrix hosts a vein and vugs filled with sharply crystallized, pink hodgkinsonite crystals. The translucent and lustrous crystals reach 8 mm and the main crystal here is doubly terminated. These are large crystals and this is a very rich example for the species and locality. Moreover, it is a good display specimen instead of the typical chunk of ugly rock. Rarely available, this is one from an old collection sold at the Rochester Sypmosium last year (2008). Ex.
