This is a stellar miniature, far beyond the "reference example" category for the species, featuring unusually thick and stout crystals of this exceptionally rare silver telluride species. This locality is recognized to have produced best of species, but over 150 years ago now! SHARP crystals to 1 cm adorn the top of this knoll of quartz matrix. It is as good as you can reasonably expect to find at a reasonable price point, and also fairly displayable.

Hessite with Gold from Botes, Transylvania, Romania [db_pics/pics/gld27a.jpg]

A stunning, superbly crystallized thumbnail specimen of hessite crystals. Hessite, a silver telluride, is one of the very rarest silver species minerals from this region, and specimens are generally quite old and prized. When they come to market, it is only out of old collections. What is more, there are small flecks of gold attached at a few places, a rare association indeed!

Hessite from Botés, Alba Co., Romania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-160227a.jpg]

3.0 x 2.7 x 1.5 cm. Any hessite from the famous old 1800's-era locale is desirable. The problem is, not so many turn up. And most are very expensive when they are available. This, however, is a rich thumbnail with a matrix association so it is displayable for a good reference specimen of this very rare silver telluride species.

Hessite, Quartz from Botés, Alba Co., Romania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-177590a.jpg]

5.6 x 2.7 x 2.2 cm. This is an incredibly rich hessite specimen with crystal sharpness, lustre, and a surprisingly rich coverage on quartz. Most hessites of this style were found in the early to mid 1800s in this important mining district. Ex. George Elling Collection.

10 x 6.7 x 2.5 cm. This is a beautiful plate from the mid-1800s in all likelihood, with sharp hessite crystals of 3 distinct crystal habits for the species, all perched in isolated clusters on contrasting quartz matrix. The largest cluster is 4 cm tip to tip, with the sharp spear sticking out the top. Ex. R. Metzger Collection.

Hessite, Quartz from Botés, Alba Co., Romania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-206898a.jpg]

8 x 4 x 3 cm. Hessite is a very rare silver telluride that occurs at its best, in large crystals as you see here, only from this old classic locality. The area with good crystals (one elongated xl is really important and dramatic) measures approximately 3x2 cm which is a rather large and impressive coverage. There is even some very microscopic gold in association. The piece retains its original patina, un-cleaned by any acids or chemicals to brighten the hessite (although this is easily done with silver cleaners) or to change the quartz from iron-stained orange to a contrasting white color (also easily done with simple iron-out cleaners). Ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection.

4.0 x 3.3 x 2.7 cm. A classic gold specimen from the famous Sunnyside mine in the renowned San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. This piece features a predominant, rather unusual complex crystal (highly modified dodecahedron with octahedral faces) of gold with excellent luster and a bright color associated with massive black-grey hessite and pale pinkish color kutnohorite on white quartz matrix. The hessite on the specimen was analyzed by Gene Foord in the early 1980s. The piece is from the famed Colorado Gold collection of Richard A. Kosnar, and his label accompanies the piece. According to the label, the piece was mined in 1978, and Rich purchased the piece in 1983 after the Sunnyside Mine was shut down for over a year when Lake Emma collapsed and flooded the entire mine from the top down. A great Gold specimen from this now defunct, but highly significant Colorado Gold mine. From the D Level, Little Mary Vein.

2.1 x 1.6 x 1.3 cm. A stunning, superbly crystallized thumbnail specimen of hessite crystals. WOW! This is an incredible, world-class thumbnail of this very rare silver species! Such pieces are usually 100-200 years old and more. Pristine, aesthetic examples are few and far between in any size, but THIS ONE is a competition level piece for aesthetics, aside from the rarity and history. Note the Smithsonian label showing it is from the Carl Bosch collection. Bosch didnt collect anything bad. Even his small stuff is good, as this exemplifies! 2.1 x 1.7 x 1.5 cm

Hessite, Sphalerite from Botés, Alba Co., Romania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-76582a.jpg]

This is an exceptiopnally large specimen for any Botes material, to have survived. It consists of a very interesting mix of battleship-grey hessite crystals growing amidst black sphalerite, and has hessite of excellent quality (all the complex, sharp xls in the pictures). You get a lot of visual impact for the buck, though, something hard to "get in hessite" nowadays. This piece is certainly over 100 years old, if not 200. I have handled only a half dozen nice hessites in 2 decades, and this would rank near the top of the lot of them. Moreover it is aesthetic, and unusually attractive to the non-hessite-lover as well . Ex Dave Bunk specimen 6.0 x 3.7 x 2.8 cm

ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection Hessite is a very rare silver telluride that occurs at its best, in monster crystals as you see here, ONLY from this old classic locality. Specimens are extremely hard to obtain today and the few I have ever gotten tend to sell quickly. In europe, I have seen far inferior specimens to this priced at over double the price, and in euros no less. So I think that here, my friend is parting with a true treasure (even though it was a duplication, I argued for him to keep it...). The area with good xls (one elongated xl is really important and dramatic!) measures approximately 3x2 cm which is a rather large and impressive coverage. There is even some very microscopic gold in attendance. The piece retains its original patina, uncleaned by any acids or chemicals to brighten the hessite (although this is easily done with silver cleaners) or to change the quartz from iron-stained orange to a contrasting white color (also easily done with simple iron-out cleaners). I love the historic look of the piece. It is clean...by no means "dirty"...but it retains the look of an ancient specimen and is not "modernized" as too many are into a shiny silver crystal group on sparkling white quartz.

This is an incredibly rich hessite specimen with crystal sharpness, lustre, and a surprisingly rich coverage o quartz that you almost never see for this rare species. It really is MUCH more showy than the average hessite (and even those are quite rare), which usually has gray lumps on a gray rock. The combination of the vertical stackign and the white quartz flanking the crystals makes these leap out 3-dimensionally, and as you can see the crystals are in excellent condition, not worn and abraded, despite their age. Most hessites of this style were found in the early to mid 1800s in this important mining district. The provenance here goes back to Julius Böhm, one of the most important of the early Viennese mineral dealers (in the late 1800s). Later it went to a collecttor named Tschermak and then to noted dealer Lazard Cahn , circa 1915, by his label. It was almost certainly mined earlier, however. At some time in the 1970s, it entered the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History on loan for a display exhibit, before finally finding rest in another Musuem (details to owner). I obtained this in trade from collector George Elling, recently. I think the price is extremely fair compared to specimens of far inferior quality, but larger in size, that I have seen from some old collections come up for sale in Munich recently.
