3D48 - Herderite w/Quartz & Cookeite - $ 95 SOLD Waisanen Mine, Greenwood, Oxford County, Maine, USA thumbnail, 2.3 x 2 x 1.5 cm ex. Marilyn Dodge
Good Herderites are hard to find, particularly from Maine. The main crystal is 1.1 cm tall, with excellent luster, good clarity, and very good form. Even all the secondary crystals are excellent on this specimen.
D06-51 - Herderite (floater) - $ 3000 SOLD Pech, Kunar Province, Nuristan, Afghanistan small cabinet, 7 x 6 x 4 cm
A most unusual herderite! I have never seen another like it. This greenish crystal is shaped more like a garnet than any herderite I had ever seen, and has glassy lustre unusual for a herd. I would have gussed a weird garnet, myself, on first sight. It is complete and well formed on front and sides, and is also complete on the back although the back includes some attached matrix and so is not as nicely crystallized as the front - still, though, a floater.
D10-83 - Herderite - $ 200 SOLD Mt. Apatite, Auburn, Maine miniature, 3.3 x 3.0 x 2.9 cm ex. Robert Whitmore
A sharp, translucent crystal of 1.3 cm, from this classic locality.
EDD4 - Herderite on Topaz - $ 6000 SOLD Dassu, Haramosh Mountains, Gilgit, Pakistan miniature, 3 x 2.9 x 2.2 cm ex. Dr. Edward David
It is rare that Ed was interested in small gem crystals. However, THIS is a piece unique and beautiful enough to pique his attention! Herderite is rare enough, green herderite rarer still, and herderite actually growing on topaz almost unheard of! This remarkable example of paragenesis is aesthetic and beautiful, as well. Ed bought this from Herb Obodda when Herb returned with it from a trip to Pakistan in the summer of 2003. It is one of the finest examples of the green herderites that briefly trickled out of Pakistan for a few years
gem7-08 - Herderite - $ 750 SOLD Shigar Valley, northeast of Skardu, Baltistan, Pakistan miniature, 3.8 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm
GREEN herderite from a small find, or series of small finds, that has been ut now for about 7 years. i LOVE this material, which to me seems unique among herderites for color. This is a good-sized plate with sharp lustrous crystals to 1.5 cm and a good display face (though it is contacted at the edges).
GEMS-117 - Herderite - $ 175 Brazil thumbnail, 7.6 x 5.9 mm ; 1.66 carats
Herderite is only found in a few localities around the world in gem quality crystals. It is a rare collector gem especially in larger size stones. I have seen quite a few faceted Herderites over the years, and they have some of the most unusual colors in the gem world. This stone is slightly included, and has a light silvery-lilac hue. It has a Rectangle cut, and is a lovely color for this material.
K-184 - Herderite - $ 400 SOLD Erongo Mountains, Namibia miniature, 4.5 x 3.9 x 2.5 cm ex. Charlie Key
A rare locality specimen of herderite, extremely rare for this locale, as featured in the recent Minerlogical Record article on this locality!
MD-140631 - Herderite - - Archived Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia miniature, 4.5 x 3.9 x 2.5 cm
A rare locality specimen of herderite, extremely rare for this locale, as featured in the recent Minerlogical Record article on this locality! 4.5 x 3.9 x 2.5 cm
MD-180711 - Herderite, Schorl - - Archived Erongo Mountain, Usakos and Omaruru Districts, Erongo Region, Namibia small cabinet, 7 x 5.7 x 2.4 cm.
7 x 5.7 x 2.4 cm. A fine coating of dozens upon dozens (maybe hundreds) of gemmy .3 cm Herderite crystals on a rich nest of intergrown Schorl crystals. The Herderites are gemmy, lustrous, striated, and have the faintest tint of light green. The Schorls are about .8 cm and highly lustrous. They are so sharp and shiny that they maintain their individuality. Ex. Charlie Key.
MRZ102 - Herderite - $ 250 SOLD Linopolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil miniature, 6 x 4.6 x 1.2 cm ex. Martin Zinn
A VERY sharp, unusually bladed herderite crystal that is translucent around the edges and has a very sharp, narrowed, twin plane as you see in teh second photo. Interesting crystallography for the species, especially from this locale known more for short, fat herderites.
MRZ176 - Hydroxyl-Herderite - $ 275 SOLD Xanda Mine, Virgem de lapa, Minas Gerais, Brazil miniature, 4.5 x 3.3 x 3 cm ex. Martin Zinn
From the famous 1969 pocket of purple herderites, comes this very choice miniature on matrix of feldspar. The crystals are unusually gemmy and clean! The larger one measures 2 cm across.
RLKG10-214 - Herderite - $ 210 Brazil thumbnail, 9.5 x 5.5 mm ; 1.41 carats
Herderite is only found in a few localities around the world in gem quality crystals. It is a rare collector gem especially in larger size stones. I have seen quite a few faceted Herderites over the years, and they have some of the most unusual colors in the gem world. This stone is slightly included, and has a very light silvery-lilac hue. It has a standard "Step Pear" cut, and is a bizarre color for this material.
RWHIT-13 - Hydroxyl-Herderite - $ 950 SOLD Fletcher Mine, North Groton, New Hampshire, USA miniature, 3.6 x 3.4 x 2.1 cm ex. Robert Whitmore
A remarkable, large crystal of herderite from this classic locality. Herderite crystals of such size, from any US locality (or any locality ouside of Brazil for that matter) are extremely rare. This is a significant US species specimen, way beyond the norm of any reasonable expectation. Collected by Bob Whitmore in the early 1980s
SS4 - Herderite - $ 750 SOLD Xanda Mine, Virgem da Lapa, Minas Gerais, Brazil miniature, 3.7 x 2.8 x 2.5 cm ex. Dr. Steve Smale
In the late 1970’s a marvelous find of gem minerals was made at Virgem da Lapa, including the world’s finest herderites. This specimen features a 2.6 cm long, translucent, blue- gray, gemmy and lustrous herderite with tiny green elbaites and pink lepidolite crystals. It is a very attractive miniature and has a definitively more blue hue to it than the generally purplish ones for which the mine is famous. It is complete all around save for a few very trivial contacts. He got it in Brazil himself, while teaching math in Rio.
T06-16 - Herderite, Schorl and Albite - $ 800 SOLD Shigar Valley, northeast of Skardu, Baltistan, Pakistan thumbnail, 3.3 x 3 x 2.3 cm
An extremely rare thing, this! Green herderites of this odd tabular form were found just once, about 5-6 years ago, and specimens are seldom obtainable today. I got this one from Herb Obodda, who brought them out at that time and seems to have found a straggler in his stock recently. This one features a 2 x 2 x 1 cm crystal perched on a knob of albite, with a small schorl hanging off one side for accent from that view; and the beautiful white of teh albite ball presenting on the other side. There is a smaller, secondary crystal nebeath the major crystal atop, but it is broken at its base anyhow and serves mainly as color accent, not the visual focus. I think these herderites are, to my taste, the finest for the species since the purple Brazilian ones came out in the 1960s
