15edd45c - Hemimorphite - $ 9500 SOLD Roughton Gill Mine, Caldbeck Fells, Cumbria, England small cabinet, 9.3 x 7.1 x 5.8 cm ex. Dr. Edward David ex. Lindsay Greenbank
A superb, colorful, 3-dimensional, and just overall outstanding example of the mid-1800s hemimorphite that came from small finds here. These are highly treasured in the UK and not parted with lightly. Lindsay greenbank , the most noted collector of such things, obtained it from the Klimm collection. What is striking to me about this piece is the 3-dimensional aesthetics...usually these look like so much flat blue carpet for the price. Here, we actually get something more interesting to look at! Ed bought this from Lindsay at the same time he got his famous pyromorphite specimen shown elsewhere on my site, and paid $17500 at the time when pounds were closer to parity with the USD. In England, I have seen lesser specimens priced at 10-15k. They truly go for fortunes. But, acknowledging that outside the UK its tough to get the appreciation for the rarity of such pieces and thus those kinds of numbers for these, even one as good as this, I've amortized this down below what Ed paid - to 9500 for quick sale.
3D11 - Fluorellestadite ps. Hemimorphite (wilkeite) - $ 200 SOLD Mapimi, Durango, Mexico thumbnail, 2.7 x 2.7 x 1.7 cm ex. Marilyn Dodge
A truly amazing pseudomorph with SHARP blades up to .7 cm. Although small overall, this is the best example I have yet seen of this classic replacement which used to be called by the name of wilkeite. The pics say it all.
AZMEX33 - Hemimorphite - $ 275 SOLD 16th Level, Potosi Mine, West Camp, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico small cabinet, 6.7 x 5.4 x 4.9 cm ex. Evan Jones
This attractive specimen consists of several white, lustrous, translucent, hemimorphite crystals on matrix, to over 4.0 cm in length. The dusting of red hematite on the crystals adds measurably to their beauty and aesthetics. Formerly in the collection of Evan Jones. He handled most of the fine specimens from this pocket, and kept this for himself for near a decade. It is VERY choice!
HECK-105 - Hemimorphite - $ 1200 Ojuela Mine, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico cabinet, 10.9 x 6.8 x 5.3 cm ex. Richard Heck
An unusual piece, amidst many hemimorphites that all look sorta the same in styles! On a thin crust of ocherous limonite are fat fan-shaped clusters, some of which have coalesced into a big pinwheel. The crystals are glassy and translucent, colorless to white , with a faint red hematite speckle atop. Individual fan-shaped clusters reach 3 cm across. The fanshaped clusters are quite different from the elegant single crystals we normally see from here, and of a large size for this habit as well. Complete all around!
HECK-232 - Hemimorphite - $ 900 Santa Eulalia Dist., Serdan, Chihuahua, Mexico small cabinet, 6.2 x 6.0 x 4.8 cm ex. Richard Heck
A gorgeous radiating spray of fat crystals that get wider to the terminations! These crystals are emplaced aesthetically on a matrix of ocherous limonite . They are exceptionally glassy and translucent, to 5 cm in length with a real "sparkle" to them. An excellent piece, with unusual style for this material which usually consists of more jumbled crystals.
J08-01 - Hemimorphite - $ 1800 SOLD Sa Duchessa Mine, Domusnovas, Carbonia-Iglesias Province, Sardinia, Italy large cabinet, 20 x 11 x 6 cm
This is an old-timer European classic out of the Rolf Wein Collection in Germany, which was rich in such exotic specimens. From the island of Sardinia, this is a large and gorgeous plate of sky-blue botryoidal hemimorphite, now VERY hard to obtain particularly in this size and richness. It actually compares favorably to the beautiful contemporary Chinese ones, but of course is far more rare on the market and luckily has a distinct matrix. And frankly, we have priced this not far above what a common Chinese example of this size and quality would go for! I have not seen one this large and in such fine overall condition/coloration for sale before in the US, at least.
MD-104073 - Hemimorphite - - Archived Roughton Gill Mine, Roughton Gill, Caldbeck Fells, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK small cabinet, 9.3 x 7.1 x 5.8 cm
It comes with Lindsay's label full of its own superlatives in his words. What is striking to me about this piece is the 3-dimensional aesthetics. 9.3 x 7.1 x 5.8 cm
MD-112892 - Aurichalcite, Hemimorphite - - Archived 79 Mine (79th Mine; Seventy-Nine Mine; Seventy-Nine property; McHur prospect), Chilito, Hayden area, Banner District, Dripping Spring Mts, Gila Co., Arizona, USA small cabinet, 5.2 x 4.0 x 3.2 cm.
5.2 x 4.0 x 3.2 cm. A combo from the classic 79 Mine, from NEW mining there over the past couple of years that has yielded a trickle of specimens of various sorts . . . this one combines bursts of gemmy acicular crystals of bright blue-green aurichalcite with dove-gray hemimorphite.
MD-119166 - Hemimorphite - - Archived Mvouti (M'Fouati), Mvouti District, Kouilou Department, Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) cabinet, 11.6 x 6.8 x 5.7 cm.
11.6 x 6.8 x 5.7 cm. A very unusual, pretty, sizeable plate of glimmering crystals of hemimorphite, of a beautiful light pastel color, from the Congo - NOT a typical locality for hemimorphites, with the vast majority of collector-quality specimens coming from Mexico. Almost certainly the color is due to copper-mineralization inclusions. You can see the sparkly luster of this rich carpet of densely intergrown, translucent crystals.
MD-122778 - Smithsonite, Hemimorphite - - Archived Potosí Mine (El Potosí Mine), Francisco Portillo, West Camp, Santa Eulalia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdán, Chihuahua, Mexico miniature, 4.1 x 3.6 x 3.2 cm.
4.1 x 3.6 x 3.2 cm. Sea-green, translucent smithsonite crystals aesthetically cover gossan matrix and are beautifully accented with glassy hemimorphite needles and sulfides on this excellent specimen from the Potosi Mine at Santa Eulalia, Mexico. The centrally located trigonal smithsonite and two pineapple-shaped smithsonites, immediately below, with tiny, porcupine-like, smithsonite needles really set this fine piece off. This small find caused a major stir at shows about 10 years ago. Ex. George Elling Collection.
MD-122958 - Hemimorphite - - Archived Wenshan Mine, Dulong ore field, Wenshan Co., Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China large cabinet, 20.9 x 11.2 x 5.2 cm.
20.9 x 11.2 x 5.2 cm. Hemimorphites from China of the best turquoise blue and high sparkly luster (and this one is TOP quality) are prized and highly valued at large size. But this is just a HUGE one! It is a shallow vug 18 cm across completely lined with these spectacular bright microcrystals that formed on a half-centimeter layer of massive hemimorphite.
MD-130089 - Hemimorphite - - Archived Wenshan Mine, Dulong ore field, Wenshan Co., Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China cabinet, 13.2 x 9.3 x 5.6 cm.
13.2 x 9.3 x 5.6 cm. A BIG, RICH specimen of sparkling blue hemimorphite from China! This material is prized not only by collectors, but also by the Chinese dealers themselves it seems, from the very high prices they charge for it; compared to so many minerals from China, these are just not common, and people fight over them. You do not see many of this size and richness around for sale!
MD-132242 - Hemimorphite - - Archived Wenshan Mine, Dulong ore field, Wenshan Co., Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China cabinet, 12.9 x 6.7 x 4.9 cm.
12.9 x 6.7 x 4.9 cm. These sky-blue hemimorphite specimens are prized by the Chinese, as they are not available in good quantities, so they have been and remain rather expensive. This large specimen is botryoidal in form, with a beautiful sparkly surface.
MD-132277 - Hemimorphite - - Archived 79 Mine (79th Mine; Seventy-Nine Mine; Seventy-Nine property; McHur prospect), Chilito, Hayden area, Banner District, Dripping Spring Mts, Gila Co., Arizona, USA large cabinet, 16.5 x 13.4 x 8.4 cm.
16.5 x 13.4 x 8.4 cm. No, this is not a Chinese hemimorphite, but an old-timer from the legendary 79 Mine in Arizona. And a BIG and RICH one at that! Though the 79 Mine has been mined a bit over the past few years and turned up some minor specimens, mostly smithsonites, little aurichalcites and such, nothing like this specimen from the old days has turned up. This is a complete shallow vug covered richly with hemimorphite, decorated with small, delicate rosettes of calcite.
MD-137767 - Calcite, Hemimorphite - - Archived Omega Mine (Omega Tunnel; Omega Extension), Monument Mountain, Helvetia, Helvetia-Rosemont District, Santa Rita Mts, Pima Co., Arizona, USA small cabinet, 8.4 x 6.3 x 5.2 cm.
8.4 x 6.3 x 5.2 cm. From an old collection - a pocket or geode completely lined with sparkly calcite on a layer of underlying hemimorphite. Omega Mine specimens are very rare on the market!
