On a sliver of matrix are two large rosettes, to 4.5 cm across, formed by bladed crystals of lustrous, black hematite. Emerging from the hematite are a few transparent colorless quartz crystals, to 3.3 cm in length. This is a very fine combo specimen featuring differing colors and textures, way beyod the normal quality expected of material from this still-producing locale. For the size, it is among the best of its type I have seen for 3-dimensional balance and aesthetics, and the absolute gemminess of the quartzes which are usually more cloudy and dull from this location.

A beautiful, good-sized specimen with sharp pink rhombs of smithsonite to 8mm. This is an old classic smithsonite from Tsumeb. The smithsonite crystals are covering bright orange crystals of quartz to 2mm - an association I had not sene previously. Several damaged smithsonite crystals are present on the specimen but overall its in pretty good shape and nothing visually detracts. Its better in person because the quartz adds a colorful accent which has more appeal in person. Piece comes with old Conklin and Hauck labels.

RH02-35 - Hematite (pseudocubic) - $ 600

Hematite (pseudocubic) from Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil [db_pics/pics/rh02-35a.jpg]

Complexly terminated crystals of hematite to 2.6cm on a massive hematite matrix. The crystals have incredible mirror luster and are sharply formed, pseudocubic in fact. Some twinning appears to have occurred to some of the crystals. Nice display angle for the piece adds to the pizzazz. Minor edge wear is present on a few crystals but for the most part the crystals are in very good condition.

For all of its mineral treasures, Mexico is not especially noted for fine hematite specimens. This appears to be a fine exception. This doubly terminated, highly lustrous, gray, crystal exhibits almost sculptured, intricate aspect.

This is a complete, mirror bright, well formed cluster of hematite crystals. The longest crystal is 3.0 cm in length. Minor damage around the periphery is insignificant in context, really. It is a very dramatic piece, with crystals I want to call pseudocubic, that are possibly twinned.

This is a beautiful curving plate of kidney-ore hematite shell, on which is perched sparkling hematite crystals, on which are perched sharp white crystals of bipyramidal quartz (often called beta quartz from this locality, though it is not tehcnically true "beta" quartz form). From the Schortmann's famous Hotel Lexington exhibitions held in NYC yearly, dated 1950 on the back of the label.

An oustanding toenail-(large thumbnail)-sized example of this classic habit from old England, often called beta quartz (though technically it only to the eye resembles true beta quartz in strict crystallographic terms). Isolated, gemmy crystal on sparkling hematite matrix, just extremely balanced and fine!

A superb and unusually large floater, single crystal of smoky quartz, miraculously in excellent condition despite being over 100 years old! Interesting, and I have not seen this often on this form of quartz from here, there are small hematite crystals perched atop, like sprinkles on two faces. Note an inked black arrow on the back of this specimen was made by the early-1900s AMNH curator Gratacap in curating the display specimens from the Bement collection after it was donated to the AMNH by financier JP Morgan, who purchased the collection after Bement's death. The arrow denotes the rear direction on the shelf on which the specimen was to be placed, thus showing its proper orientation on the display shelves of the museum. As the MinRecord archive states, Clarence Sweet Bement was one of the greatest American mineral collectors of all time, from around 1866 to 1900, known for his high level of taste in specimens. Bement #3290, and I am working on getting the original accession information as it has been lost with the specimen now. A gorgeous, unusual specimen that has rare exact mine information preserved with it! The color is shocking red, due to hematite inclusions in the quartz cores, against sparkling black crystallized hematite in the background. Superb miniature of a rare style, from the late 1800s. The label dates it to the late 1800s, as well.

THis is an early Thunder Bay amethyst form the late 1800s, with a Foote label still glued to the bottom 100-plus years later! While broken off matrix, this crystal is complete all around and pristine save a few tiny dings...remarkable for the age of it. This early material has obviously a much deeper and more interesting color than most of what is found there today, and impressed me with its intense color (more obvious, perhaps, in person).

An extraordinary specimen composed of distinct, angular crystals of magnetite pseudomorphed to hematite. A great piece with no damage save a tiny nick or two if you look ultraclosely. This is one of the more robust, dramatic examples I have had in awhile for this material. It is an exceptional example of the finds. 330 grams

This is one of the more attractive, and certainly most amazing, Smithsonites that I have ever seen. It consists of sharp red phantoms within clear scalenohedral crystals. To say that this is unusual would be putting it mildly. SMALL but BEAUTIFUL! Purchased from the Zweibels in 1979
