5.0 x 4.4 x 1.0 cm. Water-clear, tabular celestine crystals of this quality are rare and very seldom available from the classic and long-extinct Yate Quarry of England. This very fine, two-sided, glassy, sharp crystal is very slightly tapered and the beveled termination has an interesting dusting of the hematite. Old-time material from this historic locale from the Robert Sullivan Collection.

Baryte, Hematite, Quartz from Haile Moor Mine, Egremont, West Cumberland Iron Field, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK [db_pics/mdpics/MD-266149a.jpg]

10.2 x 6.6 x 5.6 cm. A highly unusual, strangely shaped, combination cabinet specimen from the famous iron mines of Egremont, England. Pink, crested baryte blades are sheathed in a dramatic box-work of specular hematite, which in turn, is coated with a quartz druse, giving the hematite the sparkly look. I have never seen an English baryte with this type of hematite/quartz association. Strange, but very interesting. This probable old-timer, from the very much less well-known Haile Moor Mine is from the J.G. Dixon and John Ydren Collections.

Calcite, Hematite from Bigrigg Mine, Bigrigg, West Cumberland Iron Field, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK [db_pics/mdpics/MD-266282a.jpg]

7.2 x 6.8 x 5.4 cm. Calcite specimens from the famed and historic Bigrigg Mine of Cumbria are always much sought after. The pretty, complete-all-around and pristine knob of glassy and translucent, intergrown rhombs has beautiful inclusions of color-zoned hematite. The knob is artfully set on the calcite-rich matrix. Calcite rhombs are rarely seen from this noted locale, as one usually sees scalenohedrons. Old-time material, probably dating to around 1900 or earlier, but no proof.

Hematite from Great Rock Mine, Hennock, North-Eastern Dartmoor, Dartmoor & Teign Valley District, Devon, England, UK [db_pics/mdpics/MD-270153a.jpg]

7.2 x 6.8 x 2.4 cm. Brilliant metallic, dark gray to black, melted-look hematite thickly covers matrix on this fine and rarely available material from an uncommon Devon, England locality - the Great Rock Mine. Hematite ore was mined in World War II for warship paint. The ore was nicknamed "Shining ore". Ex. Tony Ellis and Wes Parker Collections.

Hematite from Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-270166a.jpg]

5.3 x 3.7 x 1.5 cm. A rare and unusual, tabular section of lustrous, pseudocubic hematite from the famous Franklin Mining District of New Jersey. Some of these faces are (in situ) parting cleavages, but this is simply how the material forms, and is accepted as such. This is most uncommon material from the Franklin Museum and the Gene Meieran Collection.

4.5 x 2.8 x 1.1 cm. A classic and pristine Cavradi hematite specimen of splendent, parallel-growth hematite blades on a tiny bit of starkly contrasting matrix. The hematite blades have interesting, stepped-growth faces and both sides of the piece have embedded gemmy, wine-red rutile crystals. There is even a tiny quartz crystal implanted along the crest. The very high lustre, excellent form and rutile association make for an excellent specimen. Ex. Gene Meieran Collection.

7.0 x 3.8 x 3.8 cm. This association is rather uncommon in the mineral world, and you just don't see specimens with such great quality and aesthetics from this area. The pegmatites near the Lake George area of Colorado have produced what most collectors and dealers consider to be the finest Amazonite specimens from the standpoint of superb color, top quality, wonderful display specimens and excellent associations. This particular specimen has no Amazonite, but it is a fantastic display piece featuring sharp metallic grey pseudmorphs of Hematite after Siderite aesthetically perched along the prism faces of a translucent, sharp, deep color group of Smoky Quartz crystals. Some minor associated pink and white Microcline at the base of the piece make for a nice touch as well. This specimen was collected nearly 30 years ago (August of 1980), when Richard Kosnar found some of the finest color Amazonite from Colorado extant. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

Calcite, Hematite from Egremont, West Cumberland Iron Field, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK [db_pics/mdpics/MD-271630a.jpg]

11.0 x 8.5 x 7.0 cm. An old-time, classic, cabinet specimen from the famous iron mines of Egremont, England. Stout, glassy, transparent, colorless to hematite-tinted pink calcite scalenohedrons richly and aesthetically cover the mounded matrix of hematite ore on this fine piece. The calcite crystals are up to 3.3 cm long and have unusual, modified, three-sided, pyramidal, terminations. This is a very fine large example of this important calcite varietal from this historic locale. Probably 100 years old or older.

18.5 x 11.8 x 7.8 cm. A dramatic, very attractive large cabinet calcite specimen from recent finds at Santa Eulalia, Mexico. Sharp, lustrous, and translucent calcite rhombs are included with rust-red hematite. Crystals reach 3.7 cm on this piece. The piece is damage-free, impressive for such a large specimen.

3.1 x 2.6 x 1.5 cm. A superb large thumbnail (2.6 cm) composed of a crystal of Hematite that has excellent form and superb luster. This central crystal is accented by numerous smaller Hematites and many sparkly micro Andradites. It is complete-all-around. Its lustre, sharpness of form, and overall display as a thumbnail makes it an outstanding competitive-level piece as well as a classic for the locality. Ex. Charlie Key.

5.5 x 4.5 x 3.2 cm. A superb set of absolutely gem-clear Calcite crystals from the N’Chwaning Mine. The largest of these crystals is 4 cm long, and it encompasses much of the matrix underneath. In fact, the crystals are so perfectly gemmy that every metallic inclusion and every bit of matrix under the crystals show up double-refracted, making it very hard to fully appreciate in the photos. It is much better in person - it looks like well-formed water, it is so clear. An absolutely stunning and unique calcite specimen - never seen the like. Ex. Charlie Key.

The tips of many of the amethyst crystals are particularly gemmy and the colorful, brick-red hematite inclusions are a classic accent. Expertly collected. Excellent, highly representative material from the famous Thunder Bay District of Ontario.
