Grossular from Jeffrey mine (Jeffrey quarry; Johns-Manville mine), Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-40555a.jpg]

Grossulars from the Jeffrey are becoming very, very hard to get with the closing of the mine. There has been a real scramble for them. This is a most unusual plate of crystals, due to its color, which is more pink and less sherry-colored than usual. This makes it particularly attractive and unique, I think. The crystals are LARGE, some of them measuring over one centimeter across. Some matrix shows to frame the grossulars. A fine piece from a sought-after locality. 5.2 x 4.6 x 1.5 cm

The mining of these is finished, and there has been a scramble to get specimens that remain on the market. I have picked up all the reasonably-priced specimens I have seen. This is a pretty, sparkly toenail specimen, with gemmy crystals of the classic color to 0.5 cm. 3 x 2.5 x 1.8 cm

The crystals on this specimen are about as gemmy as they get (much gemmier than the pics show). In fact, one that rises above the others looks like a cut gemstone! These grossulars are not coming out anymore, and there has been a huge scramble to get the ones on the market, so I have been buying all I can get. 3.3 x 2.9 x 1.8 cm

Two of the garnets on this cluster measure 2.5 cm across, with superb glassy luster and pretty tannish-green color. This is very nearly a floater cluster, with just one little attachment visible in one place. 4.3 x 3.2 x 2.5cm

There has been a scramble to get good specimens of grossular from the Jeffrey since the closing of the mine. This is a superb thumbnail specimen, a cluster of big (to 1 cm), super-gemmy, super-lustrous crystals with pretty striations on the bevels. 2.2 x 2.0 x 1.2cm

A shallow pocket full of tan-colored grossular garnet crystals, from the now-closed Jeffrey Mine. There are a couple of bruises around the periphery of the pocket, but none in the main part. 7.1 x 5.1 x 3.3cm

An absolutely perfect, lustrous, textbook grossular garnet of 2 cm, beautifully exposed on the matrix, of the creamy color characteristic for this locality. One of the most aesthetic I have seen of these. 4.7 x 4.6 x 2.6cm

For a thumbnail specimen, these crystals are really large and fine! The largest measures a centimeter from tip to tip, and ALL are as gemmy as glass! I have been buying all the reasonably priced specimens available of this material as the mine recently closed for good and there has been a scramble to grab these. 2.4 x 2.1 x 0.9cm

A large, sharp, unusually big crystal with fat and juicy color. It is isolated and 3-dimensional, and just gorgeous. Most are much smaller. It DOES have, admittedly, a little bit of damage in the form of minor edge wear. It is hard to notice and not detracting. 2.7 x 2.7 x 1.5 cm

A huge grossular garnet of textbook dodecahedral form, quite lustrous, with very minor bruising on a couple of tips but in superb shape overall. These are the type of crystals that, like cubic Spanish pyrites, wear their geometry so perfectly that you just have to love them. 3.3 x 3.2 x 3.1cm

Elsewhere in this auction are four single, floater garnet crystals from this locality. This is a plate of crystals of the more traditional light greenish-tan color, with UNUSUAL translucency (they are almost always opaque). There are crystals on both sides of the specimen. 4.1 x 3.5 x 2.3cm
