Intense, deep, rich color marks this garnet as a top grade tsavorite, and not just a "minty green" garnet from this important locality for tanzanite that also has recently spit out incredible garnets and diopsides as well. The crystal is complete, embedded in its back in graphite matrix, and has saturated color throughout. It is hyperbole perhaps, but the lustre on this crystal is nothing short of "freaky" and I do not use the word lightly. Killer thumbnail! Joe Budd photos

A 3-cm-across, sharp, dramatic, textbook crystal of wine-red garnet sits here on a well trimmed matrix. This is an old and rare style, for the locality, quite different from the generally matte finish crystals you usually see from here in a variety of browns and orange colors (and, from one large find of the past, in pink). The crystal is well excavated without any repairs, and is nearly pristine (just the tiniest little dings are present, in context on such a sharp, exposed crystal). The piece is a significant Mexican garnet specimen and has the aesthetics you would want in garnet from other lcoalities, but seldom see in the lumpy matrix characteristic of this particular location. ex. Dave Stoudt Mexico Collection, and previously in the Evan Jones Mexico Collection (both being very notable for the suites assembled). Joe Budd photos.

A rarity for the locality, found in the mid- 1970s by local collectors, this is a sharp euhedral prehnite crystal, from the classic garnet locale! The prehnite measures 2 cm , tip to tip.

MCW67 - Chrome Grossular Garnet - SOLD
Black Lake, Thetford, Quebec, Canada

miniature, 4.2 x 2.5 x 1.6 cm
share specimen

ex.  Sean Finneson

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Miniature, 5 x 4.5 x 4 cm Lustrous, DEEP green crystals of the deepest color possible for the species and location due to chromium content, this is a fantastic display piece of a rare varietal of Grossular not found in many years. I am further told by a collector who has been there often that the cr-grossular from Thetford Mines are usually not bigger than 3 cm x 2cm, with less than 2 mm crystals. These crystals reach 5 mm in size and this piece is covered with them, complete and undamaged save around the periphery.

3.5 x 2.5 x 2.1 cm. According to a friend, these crystals from a find last year turned out in testing to be a rare intermediate between andradite and grossular. Here are TWO sharp crystals with good form and color from the find.

Grossular from Jeffrey mine (Jeffrey quarry; Johns-Manville mine), Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-113271a.jpg]

2.4 x 2.3 x 1.5 cm. Good Jeffrey Mine garnets have become very hard to obtain since the official closing of the mine. And though this is not a large specimen overall, the crystal itself is HUGE - a SUPERB, pure gem compound crystal, clear as glass and bright as can be! It lacks the common striations on the faces, making it even brighter. There is a contact on the side of one crystal, and a couple of micro-bruises, but as you can see, this is a very impressive example of a now rare garnet! Ex. Ed Swoboda collection.

MD-113290 - Grossular, Vesuvianite - - Archived

Grossular, Vesuvianite from Jeffrey mine (Jeffrey quarry; Johns-Manville mine), Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-113290a.jpg]

4.4 x 4.2 x 3.0 cm. Gorgeous, very glassy and gemmy, light orange grossular garnets on matrix and nicely accented with green vesuvianite crystals from the famous and now-closed Jeffrey Mine of Quebec. The large garnet is 1.3 cm and the central crystals are undamaged, save for a trivial bruise on the large crystal. The periphery damage is certainly not detracting, as you can see. ex. Swoboda collection.

6.7 x 4.4 x 1.0 cm. A GORGEOUS plate RICHLY covered with intensely gemmy and glassy orange grossular garnet crystals to 5 mm with vesuvianite from Eden Mills, Vermont. CLASSIC and beautifully choice material from the Ken Hollmann Collection.

7.7 x 6 x 4 cm. Large (2.9 cm) and very attractive Grossular from a relatively unknown location. The main crystals here have an unbelievable luster - about as good as you could possibly imagine, and a lovely cinnamon color. The internal fractures give the garnets a distinctive and quite attractive leathery appearance, but the high luster would never actually allow you think it actually was.

2.2 x 1.7 x 1.4 cm. A SUPERB, gemmy and lustrous, 1.0 cm grossular garnet crystal with OUTRAGEOUS burnt-orange color and beautifully perched on vesuvianite matrix from Eden Mills, Vermont. Beautiful and aesthetic. Ex. Dick Jones Collection.

11.2 x 10.7 x 8.1 cm. This specimen features several rather large sharp, rich brownish-red color dodecahedra on matrix. The specimen displays well from a few angles, and for Garnets this size, they are amazingly well formed and not distorted, dull or pitted.

5.9 x 3.7 x 2.2 cm. In person, this superb Mexican grossular on matrix is even redder and less pink - which is uncommon for these, as the closer they get to red, the more uncommon and desirable they are. This large crystal measures 1.5 cm across, and is TRANSLUCENT rather than opaque and light in color, as most of these are.

4.9 x 4.0 x 3.7 cm. Gemmy and lustrous, honey-colored grossular garnets to 8 mm aesthetically perched on the side of a beautiful cluster of very glassy vesuvianite crystals from Eden Mills. The little starburst of glassy quartz crystals is a very nice accent. Ex. George Elling Collection.
