MD-146131 - Smithsonite, Greenockite - - Archived Gobbler Mine, Joplin Field, Tri-State District, Jasper Co., Missouri, USA small cabinet, 9.0 x 5.7 x 3.7 cm.
9.0 x 5.7 x 3.7 cm. Lustrous botryoids of bladed, reddish-brown smithsonite form an aesthetic, old-time specimen from the Tri-State District of Missouri. This is a solid, two-sided crust of smithsonite and the botryoids on the backside are coated with yellow-tan greenockite. Bruising on some of the botryoids on the front are noted, but are really not very detracting on this fine old-timer, which comes from an UNCOMMON Joplin locality - the Gobbler Mine. Ex. George Elling Collection.
MD-192714 - Greenockite, Sphalerite - - Archived Joplin Field, Tri-State District, Jasper Co., Missouri, USA miniature, 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.3 cm.
4.5 x 3.5 x 2.3 cm. Greenockite is an uncommon cadmium sulfide. Apple-green microcrystals of greenockite richly cover the hummocky matrix of sphalerite crystals on this fine, old-time specimen from the famous Joplin Field of the Tri-State District. Ex. Underhill and Feist Collections.
MD-202144 - Greenockite, Cassiterite - - Archived Siglo Veinte Mine (Siglo XX Mine; Llallagua Mine; Catavi), Llallagua, Rafael Bustillo Province, Potosà Department, Bolivia small cabinet, 8.1 x 5.6 x 4.8 cm.
8.1 x 5.6 x 4.8 cm. This piece has several rich pockets of dense microcrystallized orange/red greenockite, in protected cavities of cassiterite ore. A rare old-time specimen from Llallagua with rich association of the very rare cadmium sulfide greenockite. This is one of two associated specimens (perhaps once joined), that were collected during the famous 4th Vaux-Academy expedition to Bolivia in 1929-1930. Ex. Academy of Natural Sciences Philadelphia Collection.
MD-202146 - Greenockite, Cassiterite - - Archived Siglo Veinte Mine (Siglo XX Mine; Llallagua Mine; Catavi), Llallagua, Rafael Bustillo Province, Potosà Department, Bolivia small cabinet, 8.0 x 6.3 x 3.5 cm.
8.0 x 6.3 x 3.5 cm. This piece has several rich pockets of dense microcrystallized orange/red greenockite, in protected cavities of cassiterite ore. MD-210603 - Greenockite, Chalcopyrite, Prehnite - - Archived Houdaille Quarry (Summit Quarry; Commonwealth Quarry), Springfield, Union Co., New Jersey, USA thumbnail, 1.6 x 1.4 x 0.5 cm.
1.6 x 1.4 x 0.5 cm. Greenockite is a rather rare species, considering it has a very simple chemistry (Cadmium Sulfide). There are only a handful of localities in the world for fine crystallized Greenockite specimens, and the Summit Quarry in New Jersey is possibly the best U.S. locality for the species (certainly the best in New Jersey). This locality opened in the early 20th Century, and produced a large number of Zeolites species and other associated minerals in its history. It is now long gone, but thanks to collectors like Richard Kosnar, many good specimens now survive from this historic Quarry. This specimen was collected by Richard Kosnar in 1964 when he had just graduated from high school. He had almost exclusive access to the quarry at the time, and was able to collect some very unique and interesting Greenockite specimens over several years time. As a matter of fact, Richard Kosnar most likely collected more Greenockite specimens from New Jersey than any other collector, even many collectors combined. This piece is mounted in a perky box, and upon close examination, one can see a small honey colored "beehive"-shaped Greenockite crystal in the center of the specimen which has a small crystal of Chalcopyrite at the base. The crystals are sitting on a beautifully contrasting green Prehnite matrix. This specimen is nearly 50 years old. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.
MD-21576 - Greenockite, Prehnite - - Archived Houdaille Quarry (Summit Quarry; Commonwealth Quarry), Springfield, Union Co., New Jersey, USA miniature, 5 x 3 x 1.5 cm
A sharp and relatively large greenockite crystal, especially from this - one of the rarest and most difficult to obtain localities for the species! The crystal measures just over 2 mm in size. It was collected from a small pocket in June of 1968 by Richard Kosnar, apparently when they still lived in Jersey. This greenockite is very significant because it's a miniature and only a handful were collected, while most were only thumbnails Obviously not from Franklin, I know...but as good a place to show it as any! 5 x 3 x 1.5 cm
MD-285103 - Greenockite, Hemimorphite, Sphalerite - - Archived Joplin Field, Tri-State District, Jasper Co., Missouri, USA miniature, 3.4 x 2.8 x 1.8 cm.
3.4 x 2.8 x 1.8 cm. A true, old-time, combination classic from the Joplin Field of the Tri-State District. Canary-yellow greenockite is included in striking radial sprays of gemmy hemimorphite blades. The sprays are richly and attractively scattered on the 3-dimensional matrix of translucent, honey-yellow sphalerite crystals on limestone matrix. Highly desirable and very showy combination material, at least 50 years old, from this historic district. From the noted Tri-State collection of George Feist.
MD-53025 - Greenockite, Prehnite, Julgoldite-(Fe2+), Calcite - - Archived Andesite quarry, Kreimbach-Kaulbach, Wolfstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany thumbnail, 7 x 7 x 5 mm
A 7 x 7 x 5 mm MATRIX greenockite from a remarkable , small find that has produced what many consider to be the bets of the species for this rarity. I had never seen such a good matrix piece for sale! This crystal is gemmy and bright, and perched nicely on matrix with calcite, prehnite, and other minerals. It is spectacular for the species. Ex. Gerald Herfurth Collection (and he paid about the same a decade ago so this is being recycled without accounting for appreciation). Is it expensive? surely. but it is a thing of such rarity that it is impossible to replace at any price. 8.9 x 6 x 4 cm
PAS-165 - Greenockite on Cassiterite - $ 750 SOLD Siglo Veinte Mine, Llallagua, Bustillos Province, Potosí Department, Bolivia small cabinet, 8.1 x 5.6 x 4.8 cm ex. Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences
This piece has several rich pockets of dense microcrystallized orange/red greenockite, in protected cavities of cassiterite ore. A rare oldtime specimen from Llallagua with rich association of the very rare cadmian sulfide greenockite. I have not seen a specimen of this material for sale before, and in fact was not aware that the species had even been found here until I looked it up. This is one of two associated specimens (perhaps once joined), that were collected during the famous 4th Vaux-Academy expedition to Bolivia in 1929-1930, and comes with one of the two original labels that accompanied the box they were in all these years.
