2.4 x 1.6 x 4.5 cm. An UNUSUAL and showy gold thumbnail from a unique 1990s St. Johns, Newfoundland find that we have got from the small lot. Bright, microcrystalline gold leaves project upward, like feathers, from the unique, pink granitic quartz and feldspar, which rest on black, host rock matrix. Very few pieces had the black, host rock and pink granite.
1.0 x 1.0 x 0.5 cm. A super-sharp, golden bright, 5 mm, cuboctahedral gold crystal aesthetically perched on gold and quartz from Australia. SELDOM do you see such a well-developed gold cuboct from anywhere! Ex. Bill Pinch and Bob Byers Collections.
1.3 x 0.9 x 0.4 cm (largest). A GOLDEN set of 15 rich yellow gold crystals and nuggets from an uncommon Venezuela locality and the Steve Smale Collection. Some of the crystals are hoppered/skeletal and there is an amazing array of sculptural shapes. The largest crystal looks just like a dog and one crystal has an exquisite leaf shape with a stem. Every one of these mostly flattened pieces is unique and different. 25 grams or just over 0.8 of 1 troy ounce.
9.1 x 7.0 x 3.8 cm. A VERY RICH and showy specimen of gold microcrystals on drusy quartz-covered matrix on this EXCELLENT specimen from historic Rosia Montana, Romania. Some gold crystals are golden bright, while other are a rich, mellow yellow. A nice contrast for a mine that was worked by the Romans. Ex. Chris Korpi Collection.
3.9 x 3.8 x 2.4 cm. There is admittedly not a LOT of gold here, but it is not just a few flecks either, and in any case this is more of an interesting locality piece (Navachab) that you do not see around much. The area of gold you see is about 1 cm in length.
1.2 x 1.0 x 0.6 cm. A SUPERB and AESTHETIC, hoppered, octahedral gold crystal on a feathery stalk from an unknown mine in Tuolumne County, California. This two-sided beauty is a very rich golden-yellow and has high lustre. It is so sharp, that it looks CARVED. This exquisite thumbnail has classic, textbook form and is from the Ed Ruggiero Collection, who purchased this super piece from Pala Properties in 1975.
6.0 x 5.3 x 3.2 cm. A SUPERB and AESTHETIC Olinghouse gold specimen. This showy piece is RICHLY covered with nests filled with tiny, scintillating gold wires. The gold is etched out of the cream-colored calcite that fills the vugs in the porphyritic host rock. This excellent gold displays beautifully without any aide. Ex. Scott Kleine Collection.
4.7 x 2.9 x 2.1 cm. The closeup pic shows why these are called "nest" golds - incredibly intricate puffs of crystalline wire gold. There are two of these balls here, each about 1.2 cm, and all gold. The specimen is made particularly dramatic and aesthetic by how these two puffballs of gold are isolated on the andesite matrix. Ex. Scott Kleine collection.
1.5 x 1.4 x 0.1 cm. Classic locality piece: bright, leaf gold with small amounts of limonite attached. Superb thumbnail for the locale! From the collection of James E. Moresby White. Ex. Carnegie Museum Collection.
1.6 x 1.4 x 0.3 cm. An aesthetic and sculptural, rich golden-yellow, leaf-like gold crystal from an uncommon Venezuela locality and the Steve Smale Collection. Every one of the mostly flattened pieces that we obtained in a trade with Steve were unique and different. 12.06 carats or just over 2 grams.
11.4 x 6.8 x 6.5 cm. A VERY RICH and showy CABINET specimen of an elongate ribbon-like vein of 3-dimensional, platy gold crystals resting on crystallized milky quartz on massive milky quartz on this EXCELLENT specimen from historic Rosia Montana, Romania. The gold crystals are a rich, mellow yellow color that is unique to Rosia Montana. Outstanding material for a mine that was worked by the Romans. This is undoubtedly old material probably from the 1800s though no way to prove it. To Elling through Harvard and Phil Scalisis collections, I am told verbally. Ex. Goerge Elling Collection.
10.5 x 6.7 x 3.3 cm. A SUPERB and AESTHETIC Olinghouse gold CABINET specimen. This showy piece is RICHLY covered with a large and thick U-shaped nest filled with tiny, scintillating gold wires. The gold is etched out of the cream-colored calcite that fills the vugs in the porphyritic host rock. This excellent gold displays beautifully from several views. Ex. Scott Kleine Collection. This would be considered unusually large and rich for the material.
6.9 x 4.1 x 3.7 cm. STRIKING, rich, golden-yellow gold flakes are densely scattered on hematite matrix on this very showy and rich specimen from a less well-known Arizona locality - the Dutchman Mine, Bouse, La Paz County. Old-time and excellent material. Ex. John Ydren Collection.
23.5 x 15.2 x 12.8 cm. This impressive large gold specimen has been on display in the Academy for ages, and was one of three golds in the hall showcase that featured gemstones, and arced up from the ground floor to the dinosaur hall. It is an old specimen with brilliant lustre and sharp crystallization characteristic of old mines of the Grass Valley district, though one cannot say which mine it might have been from, though from the style it appears to have been mined prior to WWII and perhaps much further back than that as the museum wasn't active in recent years. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences.
7.8 x 5.9 x 3.3 cm. Just incredible....A hefty, 3-dimensional, very impactful gold that leaps out from matrix. And it has a huge weight to it. This is from the Colorado Quartz Mine, and is a piece that came out in the late 90s and was sold privately at that time. It weighs a hefty 300 grams.
