This unusual specimen came to me in a collection of interesting South African minerals. I had never seen one offered for sale, and apparently the explanation is that the deposit is jealously guarded by both mining interests and the state, and exports are generally forbidden. The piece is a very rich specimen with grains of gold richly dispersed throughout a very strange matrix of lightweight, carbon-rich rock. I've not seen a gold matrix like this, ever, and I am honestly not sure what rock this is...though it at least is pretty.
This spectacularly showy specimen is equally attractive from both sides. it features a sturdy, intricate mass of dense gold crystals rising like a tree from the matrix (a lucky trim, this!). The gold rises 2 inches (5 cm) in height and is nicely centered, making it one of the prettiest and richest California golds for its size and price range that I have seen in a long time.
This is a really bright and colorful specimen from this rare locality! It features wispy, brassy gold crystals that are crystallized but "leafy" in appearance. In addition to the gold that is freestanding, it is obvious that veins extend inside the matrix as well. These are extremely hard to come by and in fact I was unaware of good specimens for sale until a friend of mine obtained a small stash of them - collected several decades ago, too.
A specimen of more classic "transylvanian" habit, with leaf gold capped by small trigon crystals of gold. Like the above, its a very fine Nevada locality piece but a damned good gold anyways for the size and price, regardless of the nice locality. Weight approx. 5 grams.
Miniature, 5 x 3 x 3 cm Bright leaf gold on matrix! A showy large miniature from a new Canadian locality. A very showy specimen with lots of flash and sparkle!
The hoppered crystal on this Australian gold specimen measures 2.8 cm in length over an INCH! And it displays as if on a natural pedestal! Though it is not razor-sharp, it is quite clearly a crystal, and gold crystals of this size are vanishingly rare from ANY locality but especially from this location better known for lumpy nuggets. The crystal sits up beautifully in relief from the rest of the specimen and is exceptionally 3-dimensional. The specimen is quite hefty, weighing 1.2 ounces, so there is substantial gold value here as well. A superb gold mini!

Like a flame leaping off its campfire in blowing wind, this dramatic 5-cm-long cluster of gold crystals seems to bend and blow over to the right, looking as if it is really about to move. It is a very visual specimen, not your usual basic "gold" lump on a rock. The gold is composed of intricately interlocking crystals in a variety of habits. It is complete on BOTH sides although more gold shows at the bottom portion, from the front. The back is freestanding, though, and clean.

This gold crystal is characterized by rounded faces and hopper growth of a large octohedral crystal, with great luster.

This is a flattened gold crystal with rich color and luster.

This gold crystal is characterized by hopper growth of a large octohedral crystal, elongated on one axis. It is really very impressive in person! It is exquisitely formed, once you start looking at it!

This flattened crystal shows strong hoppered growth on what should be the octahedral face if it had not been compressed or constrained during growth to expand more in one direction than others. The luster and color are both superior.
This is a stunning piece of unusual size and quality, and sturdiness. The thick leaves are more like plates than the typical leafy things we often see. It is VERY bright and yellow-colored, indicating a high purity. This miniature also has some eye appeal, in its arborescent form, and easily holds its own with California pieces that are inexplicably pricier despite being more common. Here, you get a lot of surface area and volume fo ryour money, so it SHOWS like a much more expensive gold even though composed of leaves which cumulatively weigh less than massive gold would.
This gold specimen is totally crystalline, comprised of cubes and crudely developed octahedrons, exhibiting hopper growth. The gold is fairly bright and light in color, possibly indicating a partial silver content (i.e. electrum). It also has high luster. The largest crystal is .5 cm in length. Crystallized gold in this quality, with such thick, stocky crystals, is rare from anywhere, particularly here. So, this is really a very exquisite Nevada gold!
MORE 3-DIMENSIONAL IN PERSON! TRULY! At first glance, this gold exhibits leaf like qualities, but closer scrutiny determines that ALL the surfaces are made mostly by distorted cubes growing one upon another en echelon along spinel twins tha tru nthe length of each leaf! There is even one area where hopper growth octahedrons are visible. This allows for displaying in every direction. Closeup photos of this specimen will reveal crystallization patterns that will mesmerize the owner...it is another very special miniature!
This gold specimen , wich weighs almost 1 ounce, is composed totally of small intergrown crystals. It is bright, lustrous, heavy and much rarer in dealers’ stocks than any California gold. It is most likely 20-30 years out of the ground and specimens of this weight are very rare!
