OUTSTANDING, FULL-SIZED THUMBNAIL of world class calibre....the pics say it all! Few gold thumbnails , for sheer quality combined with display aesthetics, have such visual impact. This is top percentile, and quite sturdy i should add
A very unusual speicmen! Wire gold is rare from ANY LOCALITY but especially so from the US. Old localities here include thos ein Colorado and a VERY few places in California. This spectacular wire, 3 inches long if you unbend and extend it, is one of the finest of its type I have seen from any California locale. The size is exceptional, and so is the brightness. It is sturdy, not as fragile as it looks. I cannot emphasize how rare and unique such a treasure is! Old labels from the Frank Hess collection and from Pala Intl
A large and important nugget for the locality! Gold nuggets from Brazil are quite hard to obtain. This one shows minute crysatllization in the pockets, as well.
ex. Al Partee ex. Austrian Museum of Vienna ex. Dr. Steve Neely ex. Irv Brown
This piece has to be one of the most aesthetic golds I have ever seen for sale from the old deposits here. It feaures an arborescent cluster of thick gold crystals leaping off contrasting TERMINATED quartz matrix. The gold is sturdy itself, and strongly embedded in the quartz as well. This incredibly aesthetic specimen has a long history! It was in the collection of the Austrian Museum of Vienna, until traded out and sold to collector Al Partee in the 1980s. When Al sold his his best miniature competition pieces, it went from him through Steve Neely to Irv Brown's miniature collection. I got it from Irv sometime in the late 1990s and traded it to Cal Graeber. Cal sold it to Mark when Mark was a curator up in Canada. Mark moved to Houston a couple of years ago. Mark brought it to lunch here in Dallas in July, and voila, its back with me again! I recognized it immediately. And, as a bonus, its now on the front cover of an important book on the mineralogy of Transylvania and these historic deposits.
A killer miniature from this hard-to-get locale! Great Red Ledge specimens are scarce now. They used to come to market up until the 1980s or so. Some say they have the best lustre of any US gold specimens, and this one certainly illustrates the point in person. This one features both crystals and leaves, arranged elegantly around a core of quartz . It is of superior quality.
A rare speicmen of WIRE GOLD, on matrix of crystalline quartz in a protected vug. Classic old locality material!
ex. Bill Forrest
An oustanding thumbnail of world class competition quality. This is from the collection of Bill Forrest, owner of the Benitoite Mine. He obtained this personally some 2 decades ago when buying a group of gold crystals in New Guinea. He says this was the single best piece in the lot, and i believe it! The sharp symmetry of the piece is fascinating and beautiful, and of a fine filligree that makes it stand out from any California material. It is truly one of the best gold thumbnails for this style of crystallization that I have seen. (not from the Mauthner Collection)
This is a very rich, dramatic, large gold to have survived from the region. Most specimens have been turned to smaller pieces over the years, it seems. The gold here is composed of both crystals and leaves, both classical Romanian habits on one specimen! For sheer eye appeal, its a Romanian gold that can hold its own in collections with gold crystals from other lcoalities of larger size (NOT MAUTHNER COLLECTION)

By any standards, this is a magnificent Gold specimen. Just look at those razor-sharp skeletal ribs that are so well preserved from the original HUGE hoppered crystals that were simply compressed. You can easily see both the rounded surfaces of the cubes and a few sharp crystal edges. The hoppered ribs following the octohedral lines give this the look on a swirling tornado. Amazing. A truly world class gold specimen and for nevada all the more so! This was one of the two outstanding specimens in the lot, which the collector had obtained by prospecting almost every year for the last 30 years!
