1.8 x 1.1 x 0.8 cm. A lovely crystalline native Gold specimen from what might possibly be the most famous Gold mining district in the United States. This piece has a very distinctive shape as it looks just like a tiny seahorse. It has great color, form and visual appeal. A lovely thumbnail Gold specimen from this historic part of California.

Gold, Copper from Andacollo Mine, Andacollo, Elqui Province, Coquimbo Region, Chile [db_pics/mdpics/MD-260070a.jpg]

4.2 x 1.9 x 1.9 cm. A rare and seldom available specimen from the historic Andacollo Mine of the Coquimbo Region of Chile. The crystals of an aesthetic copper crystal cluster with a "feather" at the top are coated with microscopic bits of bright, rich, yellow gold. The elongate, main body is a single spinel-twin, as are most of the other larger crystals. Tiny tetrahexahedrdal crystals are dotted on the spinel-twins. Classic, old-time and seldom available material from this famous locale. Ex. Jaime Bird Collection.

7.6 x 5.7 x 2.2 cm. A very rare polished specimen of classic "Dust Gold" associated with pinkish-brown Bustamite and Ferrobustamite set into massive white Quartz from the Idarado mine near Telluride. This specimen was analyzed by the late great mineralogist Gene Foord back in the early 1980s, and remains one of the only specimens of Bustamite/Ferrobustamite that I have seen from this mine. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

3.3 x 3.2 x 1.7 cm. This old-time gold is completely crystallized and from the latter half of the 19th century when gold and silver mining was at its apex in this historically important district. It has a matte luster and exquisite crystallization characteristic of the locality, and has not been burned clean to enhance the lustre - it retains its original patina. It is quite possible that this lighter color is the result of a very minor silver content in the specimen. Ex. David and Emily Stoudt Collection.

3.7 x 2.8 x 2.7 cm. How often does one find Wire Gold specimens, let alone on Pyrite matrix? This exceptionally rare and attractive association specimen is from the Brooklyn mine, which is just a few miles northwest of Silverton, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The piece features several small but somewhat thick "wires" of bright Gold along with micro crystalline Gold on Pyrite matrix. To find Gold on Pyrite is rather uncommon in the mineral world, and specimens from this mine are seldom available. This piece came from the well-known Colorado collection of Richard A. Kosnar, and his label states that the piece was collected in May of 1980 by a miner named Ed Melka.

2.7 x 1.8 x 0.4 cm. A fabulously crystallized leaf gold thumbnail from the historic Farncomb Hill of the Breckenridge District. Both sides of this rich golden, dentritic piece consist mainly of elongated, hoppered octahedrons along with a few spinel-twins. I like the way the largest crystals are at the tips of the piece. The large, distinctive, hoppered octahedron is 4 mm. These are generally historic specimens, with most having been found prior to 1900. However, some have trickled out over the years to intrepid diggers. No way to say when this one came out, in other words, but it likely is an older specimen. Note the unusual, elongated octahedrons to this specimen indicate that this piece is quite obviously from Breckenridge.

3.2 x 2.4 x 2.1 cm. From the collection of longtime Bisbee mineral collector and rock shop owner Chuck Youngblood, this is a rare Arizona nugget. It was sold by his estate, from the shop and collection material he left behind, and the location was attributed from his collection catalogue at that time. One presumes it came to his store from a local prospector. Weighs 38 grams.

3.4 x 2.7 x 2.0 cm. An extremely elegant gold thumbnail from the Eagle’s Nest Mine. This amazing, 3-dimensional, arborescent specimen is composed entirely of bright, very sharply crystallized, intergrown octahedrons and spinel-twins in attached plates. Many of both types of crystals are beautifully hoppered.

4.0 x 3.3 x 2.7 cm. A classic gold specimen from the famous Sunnyside mine in the renowned San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. This piece features a predominant, rather unusual complex crystal (highly modified dodecahedron with octahedral faces) of gold with excellent luster and a bright color associated with massive black-grey hessite and pale pinkish color kutnohorite on white quartz matrix. The hessite on the specimen was analyzed by Gene Foord in the early 1980s. The piece is from the famed Colorado Gold collection of Richard A. Kosnar, and his label accompanies the piece. According to the label, the piece was mined in 1978, and Rich purchased the piece in 1983 after the Sunnyside Mine was shut down for over a year when Lake Emma collapsed and flooded the entire mine from the top down. A great Gold specimen from this now defunct, but highly significant Colorado Gold mine. From the D Level, Little Mary Vein.

5.4 x 3.5 x 2.1 cm. Microcrystals of rich, yellow gold are concentrated on one side of the Precambrian hematite matrix on this rare specimen from a very uncommon locality in Uruguay (we obtained this from a friend who got these from an exploration geologist - I am sure of the validity of the source, just he won't divulge exact details yet). There are more microcrystals of gold scattered elsewhere. An unknown blue mineral is a fine accent. Unique in my experience.

3.5 x 2.5 x 0.5 cm. For a gold nugget, this free-form, sculptural, "tortured look", and flattened specimen is extremely aesthetic. The edges were "tortured" or folded, either by natural forces during gold deposition or by very light river tumbling. The rich, yellow color is mesmerizing and the form is interesting. Its weight is 11 grams.

6.5 x 3.0 x 2.7 cm. A fine and historic specimen of Gold from the Idarado mine. The platy crystals have a lustrous, bright, metallic appearance, and stand out beautifully against the snow-white Quartz matrix. Along the back "ridge" of the specimen, one can clearly see a patch of muted forest-green "Chlorite" crystals (most likely Clinochlore) which is highly indicative of the Idarado Mine. It was collected by Clancy Fleetwood (Brian Kosnar's great-grandfather) in 1946. The piece later became part of the famous Colorado mineral collection of Richard Kosnar, whose hand-painted label is on the bottom of the specimen. From the 650 Level, Tomboy Vein.
