Mineral Specimens with Gold

2.4 x 2.1 x 1.7 cm. A beautiful and fine, curved wreath of bright, burnished, flattened and hackly microcrystalline gold is aesthetically set atop this thumbnail wedge of pink granitic feldspar from the unique 1990s St. Johns, Newfoundland find. The pink tint on the granitic quartz and feldspar is unique.
1.3 x 1.3 x 0.5 cm. An aesthetic and sculptural, arborescent thumbnail cluster of richly burnished, golden-yellow gold crystals highlighted by hoppered or flattened octahedral gold crystals. This is old-time material from Grass Valley, California. Ex. Mullane Collection.
6.3 x 5.9 x 3.3 cm. A bright, richly burnished, 6 mm gold crystal cluster perched atop milky quartz from the much less well-known Atlantic Cable (Cable) Mine of Montana. This mine was located in 1866 and not mined for very long. Old, historic, seldom available material. Ex. Smithsonian Collection, with label.
4.5 x 2.6 x 1.7 cm. This is a superb miniature-sized matrix gold specimen, with spectacular and complex crystallization atop the matrix. It shows several different crystal habits. Ex. Saller Collection.
2.3 x 2.3 x 1.6 cm. A classic and old-time gold specimen from historic Verespatak (Rosia Montana), Romania. Lustrous, hackly, microcrystalline gold richly covers the upper part of the 3-dimensional, granulated quartz matrix. Excellent material for a mine that was worked by the Romans. This is undoubtedly old material probably from the 1800s, but no proof. Ex. Russell Jones Collection.
4.2 x 1.6 x 0.2 cm. An elegant, lustrous, mellow-yellow, leaf gold specimen from recent finds at Round Mountain, Nevada. Both sides show the multitudes of flattened octahedrons and spinel-twins that comprise this fine specimen. Ex. Dr. Mark Mauthner Collection. Highly representative of this well-known gold mine.
2.8 x 2.4 x 0.3 cm. An sculptural, lustrous, yellow, leaf gold specimen from recent finds at Round Mountain, Nevada. Both sides of the compressed, leaf-like piece show what look to be very elongated, flattened spinel-twins with octahedral terminations on this fine specimen. Ex. Mark Mauthner Collection. Highly representative of this well-known gold mine.
6.0 x 5.6 x 5.0 cm. A very rarely seen historic Gold specimen from Sweden. This specimen came to Rich Kosnar from noted Swedish collector, Stig Adolfsson in February of 1985. It features small patches of crystalline Gold sitting in quartzite rock, and according to the label, is associated with the rare bismuth, selenium sulfides "Laitakarite and probably Weibullite". Stig's original label comes attached to the box with this piece, (along with Rich Kosnar's typed number attached to the back of the specimen) and his information states that this piece is nearly a century old.
1.5 x 0.8 x 0.6 cm. A fine thumbnail cluster of bright, rich, octahedral gold crystals from recent finds at the Round Mountain Mine of Nevada. The crystals occur as hoppered to flattened octahedrons on this interesting arborescent specimen. Superb quality for the locality in this sharp thumbnail.
2.2 x 1.6 x 0.8 cm (largest). A fine two-piece set of sculptural and bright, hackly and microcrystalline gold with a bit of quartz from the Placerville area of California. The showy, feathery-looking specimens have a couple of hoppered octahedrons and both pieces have a bit of embedded quartz. "Hangtown" is probably appropriately named for those who tried to steal gold from the rightful owners and were caught. These pieces were mined in 1969.
2.5 x 1.5 x 1.4 cm. An aesthetic thumbnail specimen of bright, burnished, hackly, microcrystalline gold beautifully concentrated on the crest of a sliver of pink granite, from this unique 1990s Newfoundland find. The pink tint on the granitic quartz and feldspar is unique.
2.4 x 2.4 x 1.0 cm. A fine and aesthetic, two-sided, bright and rich gold on quartz thumbnail from the Eagle’s Nest Mine and Mark Mauthner Gold Collection. The body of flattened, layered gold leaves has a feather of spinel-twinned gold crystals and is beautifully crowned by a 3-dimensional, 6 mm, octahedral gold crystal. From the Frenchman’s adit of the mine.
2.2 x 1.2 x 0.4 cm. This fine, bright gold specimen is highlighted by large, flattened, echelon octahedrons that look like shelves, and the rest of the gold specimen extends from them. There are even "lips" on the shelves. This excellent, two-sided piece is from recent finds at the Round Mountain Mine of Nevada. Ex. Mark Mauthner Collection.
5.2 x 3.0 x 1.2 cm. A fine and unusual gold specimen from the Round Mountain Mine of Nevada and the Mark Mauthner Gold Collection. Lustrous, light golden plates and microcrystals richly coat both sides of the feather-like or fan-shaped matrix of rhyolite ash flow tuff. It is finely crystallized, but looks like elegant leaf gold at the same time. An interesting looking specimen from this famous mine.
2.3 x 2.0 x 1.1 cm. An aesthetic thumbnail specimen of bright, burnished, microcrystalline, hackly gold beautifully scattered on the top of a block of pink granite, from the unique 1990s Newfoundland find. The pink tint on the granitic quartz and feldspar is unique.
