2.1 x 2.1 x 1.0 cm. A gorgeous, aesthetic and very sculptural cluster of microcrystallized gold leaves from Breckenridge, Colorado. The leaves have a rich and beautiful, golden-yellow patina, typical of Breckenridge golds. There are even a couple of flattened wires on this old-time specimen. Almost certainly an old piece from the late 1800s when these mostly came out, though no proof. Ex. George Elling Collection.
3.4 x 1.8 x 0.8 cm. Bright native gold rises from its host quartz matrix, showing crude crystallization. The specimen has been nicely prepared to clear quartz away from the gold so it stands up nicely from the natural quartz "base." Ex. Jaime Bird Collection.
5.3 x 2.8 x 2.6 cm. A classic and old-time gold specimen from historic Verespatak (Rosia Montana), Romania. Lustrous gold leaves, in aesthetic arborescent form, have distinctive rich, mellow yellow color and crenellated form that is unique to Rosia Montana. The leaves aesthetically and richly cover contrasting matrix covered with micro quartz crystals. Excellent material for a mine that was worked by the Romans. This is undoubtedly old material probably from the 1800s, as it is accompanied by two, old labels in German, one on the back of the specimen.
2.7 x 1.8 x 1.1 cm. A rare and seldom available specimen from the historic Andacollo Mine, Coquimbo Region of Chile. The crystals of an aesthetic, arborescent copper crystal cluster are coated with microscopic bits of bright, rich, mellow-yellow gold. Classic, old-time and seldom available material from this famous locale. Ex. Mullane Collection.
An aesthetic and highly lustrous gold consisting of elongated and hoppered octahedrons AND spinel-twinned gold crystals jutting out of milky quartz matrix. Several of the trigons reach 5mm. Front and back views are shown of this gorgeous gold miniature which is just exquisite, especially for the price range. 3.3 x 1.7 x 0.8 cm
2.0 x 1.1 x 0.5 cm. A fine 2-piece set from the famous Mother Lode District of California. Two large, sculptural, flattened to rounded, river-worn gold nuggets with rich gold lustre and color comprise this lot. The rectangular nugget has a sculptural, nubby look and the flattened nugget is beautifully leaf-like. These are old-time nuggets from a lot recently obtained lot.
7.3 x 6.25 x 1.25 cm. This specimen looks like a burning bush, and is extremely elegant and fantastical in form; very sculptural and quite large in surface impact overall yet without the mass of many large golds. The patina is naturally complex, a gradient with multicolored yellow hues showing this was either freestanding in a pocket or simply physically removed from the surrounding quartz, and not acid-etched (a most common method until recent years, and which destroys such subtle ancient patinas as you have preserved here). Ex. Karl Warning Collection.
6.5 x 5 x 3.5 cm. A 102-gram crystallized cluster of unusually robust gold crystals for the Breckenridge mining district. These are generally historic specimens, with most having been found prior to 1900. However, some have trickled out over the years to intrepid diggers. No way to say when this one came out, in other words, but it likely is an older specimen. Note the unusual, elongated "leaves" to this specimen. It is quite obviously from Breckenridge but the style is just more robust than most.
5.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 cm. This was the cover piece for the 203 special book on Gold, published by Lapis Intl. It was also the cover piece for the special gold issue of the more generalist lapidary hobby's most widely circulated magazine, Rock & Gem. This piece is a superb small gold from the Eagle's Nest Mine. The piece has the most amazing wet, metallic lustre. Ex. Martin Zinn Collection.
1.9 x 1.3 x 0.6 cm. An aesthetic thumbnail specimen of bright, burnished, microcrystalline gold beautifully concentrated on the crest of a sliver of pink granite, from the unique 1990s St. John’s, Newfoundland find. The pink tint on the granitic quartz and feldspar is unique.
2.1 x 1.4 x 0.9 cm. An aesthetic thumbnail specimen of two, bright, burnished, leaf gold "rabbit ears" octahedrons to 5 mm perched atop granitic quartz and accented with platy dark minerals from the unique 1990s St. John’s, Newfoundland find that we have got from the small lot. This is one of the few pieces in the lot that did not have the pink tinted granitic quartz and feldspar that is unique.
1.0 x 0.7 x 0.6 cm. A fine thumbnail of a arborescent or antler-like cluster of richly burnished, golden-yellow gold aesthetically attached to a transparent quartz crystal shard. This is old-time material from Grass Valley, California. The piece is in a magnifying perky box.
3.1 x 2.2 x 1.3 cm. This fine locality nugget is 20 grams. It is so-called sponge gold, a mass of microcrystalline gold that is neither well-crystallized nor a pure nugget, but looks nugget-like at first glance. It is an old Brazilian specimen mined in 1978, and comes from the well-known, late dealer Carlos Barbosa.
1.7 x 1.5 x 0.9 cm. An unusual and showy gold thumbnail from the unique 1990s St. Johns, Newfoundland find that we obtained from the small lot. Clusters of bright, tiny, hackly, microcrystalline gold crystals are aesthetically placed atop the unique, pink granitic feldspar crystals, which rest on black, host rock matrix. Very few pieces had the black, host rock and pink granite.
1.9 x 1.4 x 0.4 cm (largest). An excellent two-piece set of sculptural and bright, hackly and microcrystalline gold with a bit of quartz from the Placerville area of California. The showy, feathery-looking specimens have a couple of hoppered octahedrons and the smaller gold has a bit of embedded quartz. "Hangtown" is probably appropriately named for those who tried to steal gold from the rightful owners and were caught. These pieces were mined in 1969.
