2.7 x 0.9 x 0.4 cm (largest). A fine 2-piece set from the famous Mother Lode District of California. Two, large, sculptural and flattened, river-worn gold nuggets with rich gold lustre and color comprise this set.
12.0 x 5.4 x 4.6 cm. A large specimen with rich sparkly pyrite, and perhaps some gold in it. It’s probably minute here, but the museum seems to have been sure of it. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collection.
3.7 x 2.7 x 2.5 cm. A remarkable locality piece consisting of a single complex crystal, embedded in quartz. The crystal is 8mm tall, and quite robust. It is sharpest on one face, compared to the others, but it is clearly a squashed octahedral crystal and not a mass or nugget style. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collection.
1.2 x 0.7 x 0.1 cm. A really beautiful leaf gold thumbnail comprised entirely of rich golden microcrystals from the Lizard Ridge Mine of Humboldt County, Nevada. A fascinating filigree of gold crystals. Older material. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.
2.7 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm. A fine Arizona gold thumbnail. Rich, golden-yellow, hackly gold aesthetically covers the quartz matrix on this fine, old-timer from an unknown mine in Yavapai County. Crystallized Arizona gold is seldom seen on the market and this is a good one.
6.0 x 5.6 x 5.0 cm. A very rarely seen historic Gold specimen from Sweden of all places. This specimen came to Richard Kosnar from noted Swedish collector, Stig Adolfsson in October of 1985. It features on notable sharp octahedral crystal of Gold along with crystalline Gold sitting in quartzite rock, and according to the label, is associated with the rare bismuth, selenium sulfide Pekoite and the rare lead copper bismuth sulfide Gladite plus minor Chalcopyrite. Stig’s original label comes attached to the box with this piece, (along with Richard Kosnar’s typed number attached to the back of the specimen) and as you can see the label states that this is the only known locality for crystallized gold in Sweden.
1.1 x 0.7 x 0.6 (skeletal xl). An aesthetic and sculptural, rich golden-yellow, set of two leaf-like and one super-skeletal gold crystals from an uncommon Venezuela locality and the Steve Smale Collection. The bullet-shaped, skeletal/hoppered crystal is stunning. The flattened crystal on the left looks like a stylized sailboat and the crystal on the right looks like two leaves or flower petals. Weighs 29.64 carats or 5.93 grams.
5.3 x 2.7 x 2.4 cm. This gold specimen is absolutely superb. It has natural pocket crystals, not etched out of surrounding matrix with acid and so preternaturally bright and with a complex patina. It is a large miniature which for many years was the best piece in the collection of my own mentor, Carlton Davis of Columbus, Ohio. He had bought it from Hugh Ford's famous NYC mineral shop in the 1950s. When Carl sold his collection, this piece went first to Bill Pinch and then to Mark Feinglos. The mine name of origin has been lost but it is from the Mother Lode area of old mining in California, mostly contained within the current Tuolumne County. The crystals are stunningly bright and sharp. It is intricately 3-dimensional. Ex. Dr. Mark Feinglos, Bill Pinch, and Carlton Davis Collections.
2.7 x 0.6 x 0.5 cm (largest). A fine 3-piece set from the Mother Lode District of California. Three large, sculptural, flattened to rounded, river-worn gold nuggets with rich gold lustre and color comprise this lot. The taller, rounded nugget looks like a rolling pin. The middle, leaf-like nugget is gorgeous on both sides. These are old-time nuggets. Weighs 13 grams.
3.0 x 0.6 x 0.3 cm (largest). A fine 3-piece set from the Mother Lode District of California. Three large, sculptural, flattened to rounded, river-worn gold nuggets with rich gold lustre and color comprise this lot. The taller/longer, rounded nugget looks like a dented canoe with upturned prow and stern. The leaf-like nugget with the hole is gorgeous on both sides.
1.3 x 1.0 x 0.3 cm. An uncommonly fine and sculptural gold thumbnail from the famous Grass Valley area of California’s Mother Lode. This aesthetic specimen consists of three, sharp, flattened, octahedral gold crystals beautifully perched atop a slightly folded gold leaf. This excellent piece has a bright, rich yellow-gold patina that the photo could not capture.
3.2 x 2.0 x 1.0 cm. An exquisite and sculptural crystallized gold miniature from the much less well-known Greenwood area of Placer County, California. Sharp, golden bright, slightly hoppered, octahedrons comprise this aesthetic specimen. Ex. Jean Hamel and Jamie Bird Collections.
3.4 x 2.0 x 0.4 cm. This gold specimen is from the little-known 16 to 1 Mine in California, which has been producing gold for over 100 years. (A website covering this interesting mine is at this URL: http://www.origsix.com). This specimen is a lacework of bright gold in stark white quartz. Ex. Jaime Bird Collection.
3.1 x 1.3 x 0.4 cm. This is an intricate, jewelry-like, complex gold crystal cluster from the famous but remote mines in the jungle of New Guinea. Specimens seem to emerge every few years in spurts. This is an old piece, circa 1980s, from the Jamie Bird collection.
A REALLY fine crystallized gold for this locality, with rich color and extremely sharp crystals. It is actually equally nice from either side, come to think of it! It is definitely a much more "visual" and impressively crystallized gold specimen. 5 x 4 x 0.2 cm
