5.9 x 5.4 x 2.7 cm. Goethite comes in so many forms, most of them ugly if interesting, but rarely in crystals, such as these from Colorado. This is a spray of crystals to 5 cm in length from Teller Peak, ex. John Ydren.

3.3 x 3.3 x 2.9 cm. A complete, floater ball of limonite that has pseudomorphed marcasite crystals, from France. Ex. John Ydren collection.

7.3 x 6.3 x 6.1 cm. From the Hauck Collection, a LARGE and striking example of this Utah phenomenon - goethite that has pseudomorphed a complex compound crystal of pyrite, to form a beautifully sculptural specimen that looks like modern art (with an antiqued bronze patina, even)!

4.8 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm. Now here is a truly interesting inclusion specimen - three crystals of rusty limonitic alterations of pyrite, embedded in a sharp, gemmy crystal of quartz! One of the three is entirely inside the quartz crystal, having been completely engulfed during the growth of the quartz. Rare!

Fluorite, Quartz, Limonite from Schneeberg District, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany [db_pics/mdpics/MD-162438a.jpg]

9.1 x 5.4 x 3.9 cm. A FASCINATING and rare old German specimen that came out of the Harvard Mineralogical Museum collection (comes with label). You can see clearly the cubic forms of the crystals. But if you look inside, you see that they are QUARTZ, which of course does not form these cubes; the guess of the Harvard curators is that they were originally fluorites, completely replaced by quartz, and then later cast and coated with limonite (which gives the surface their brownish color). Ex. Harvard and Elling collections.

Goethite from Lake George, Park Co., Colorado, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-162473a.jpg]

5.8 x 4.8 x 3.3 cm. Goethite specimens can be pretty clunky, amorphous and ugly, but when you get a finely crystallized specimen such as this one from Colorado, they can actually be quite attractive! The sprays of crystals here measure to 2 cm in length. From the collection of noted California collector Charles Hansen.

4.7 x 3.6 x 3.5 cm. A cluster of sharp pyrite crystals has been pseudomorphed by goethite with an antique-bronze patina, creating this sculptural specimen - a 360 degree knob that was sticking into the pocket, and was broken off neatly at the bottom to remove it. From the collection of noted California collector Charles Hansen.

Limonite, Siderite, Rutile from Gamsberg, Khomas Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-165642a.jpg]

5.2 x 4.4 x 2.9 cm. A strange and pretty mineral specimen out of the Sussman Collection, which is notable for its fine Namibian suite of minerals. This is a pseudomorph of limonite after a compound crystal of razor-sharp siderite, showing staggered rhombohedral forms. On the front face, you can see slender crystals of red rutile embedded in the face of the crystal! The specimen is actually light in the hand, as it is basically the same as rust chemically - though a whole lot prettier and obviously a significant and unusual enough specimen for the Sussmans to have in their collection. Sharpest crystal seen in a pocket they bought about 4 years ago.

Goethite, Pyrite from Pelican Point Quarry (Lakeside Lime Quarry), Pelican Point, Utah Lake, Utah Co., Utah, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-168627a.jpg]

6.5 x 6.2 x 6 cm. A fine example of the typical form of this classic Utah pseudomorph. This piece if from a different pocket found at a later period at the mine. This is a superb and very large example of the more well-known form of this pseudomorph - a floater of sculptural, interpenetrating cubes, with an antique bronze luster and micro striations on their faces. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.

Limonite, Pyrite from Hotazel mine, Hotazel, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa [db_pics/mdpics/MD-168638a.jpg]

9.9 x 7.4 x 7.0 cm. One thing you can say about this large specimen from the Kalahari Manganese fields - it is VERY unusual and striking! What you have is a cluster of pyrite crystals atop the gray manganese-rich matrix that have pseudomorphed to limonite - so you are left with these bright rust-colored euhedral crystals piled atop a dramatically-contrasting gray matrix.

Goethite from Crystal Peak area, Teller Co., Colorado, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-169735a.jpg]

5.9 x 5.2 x 5.2 cm. Goethite is pretty ugly in most of its forms, and is rarely seen in actual crystals. One exception is these Colorado specimens, where you see these sprays of lustrous crystals - here, to almost 4 cm in length. Ex. Dave Stoudt Collection.

3.4 x 2.8 x 2.8 cm. An uncommon New Mexico pseudomorph of goethite that has replaced a sharp compound crystal of pyrite - apparently completely, because when you pick it up, you can clearly feel the difference in weight. Dave Stoudt obtained this specimen on a trip to New Mexico in 2001.

Quartz, Goethite from Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-169738a.jpg]

8.4 x 5.4 x 4.5 cm. A Mexican quartz specimen with great aesthetics, from the collection of Dave Stoudt. A fat, sharp large central crystal is garlanded at its base by smaller ones, some of them clear and showing internal inclusions. Inclusions of goethite (iron oxide) give the specimen extra character.

Limonite from Nandan Co., Hechi Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-169762a.jpg]

14.4 x 13.4 x 7.4 cm. A year or so ago specimens from a single, bizarre find of sensationally iridescent and shiny limonite, were found in China. Most of the specimens were ugly, but a few had this unbelievable glitz and dazzle to them. This is a BIG specimen from the find, made up of hundreds of these little shimmering botryoidal forms with green and red hues. It is a LOT prettier in person!

5.8 x 5.4 x 2.9 cm. Bisbee is most famous for its copper-based mineral specimens, but here is an example of an iron mineral that is often ugly, but here appears in an attractive, super-lustrous botryoidal form. Collector Dave Stoudt acquired this piece at the 1987 Tucson Show for his large Bisbee suite.
