Goethite, Calcite from Wawa, Chabanel Township, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-117956a.jpg]

10.8 x 9.3 x 4.2 cm. Goethite is usually pretty ugly and unexciting, but look at the interesting form it has taken on this Canadian specimen: perfect balls, isolated on a matrix of sulfides and iron oxide! A large and very unusual specimen.

11.5 x 6.0 x 5.0 cm. An old-time CABINET specimen of lustrous, black goethite pseudomorphs after calcite rhombs totally covering matrix. A classic, excellent piece from a famous German locality and the Phil Scalisi Collection.

10.7 x 10.7 x 8.7 cm. The surface of this iridescent limonite looks like it is from another world - bumps and curves and craters, shimmering with an amazing iridescence - gold and red on this specimen! This is a LARGE one, too, with a sort of stalactitic projection in back.

5.3 x 4.8 x 4.3 cm. Very appealing specimen of lustrous orange-red Vanadinites resting on contrasting grey-black Goethite. The largest is .9 cm. The Vanadinites are quite gemmy, and they have the gorgeous orange-red caps on top of the gemmy portion that we have seen only in the specimens from this one lot. These Vanadinites on Goethite have become classics because of the beautiful contrast, but these with the caps are even more desirable. Very aesthetic and attractive all the way around. Ex. Steve Smale Collection.

4.5 x 2.3 x 2.2 cm. Fine cluster of rich orange-red Vanadinites on grey-black Goethite. These Vanadinites have the unusual opaque red-orange caps that contrast so nicely with the lustrous and gemmy side faces of the crystals. The largest of the crystals is .8 cm across. The aesthetics of each crystal, as well as the overall specimen, are very good. Ex. Steve Smale Collection.

11.8 x 11.4 x 5.5 cm. This big, rich specimen of goethite is from Brazil, not a usual locality for goethites. There is a huge array of colors on this specimen, accented by blebs of green malachite.

7.2 x 4.4 x 2.9 cm. An old-time, specimen of layered, yellow bindheimite, brown limonite and quartz with an at-the-time-UNKNOWN green mineral in a vug on the front. Bindheimite is RARE from the famous Garfield District of Mineral County, Nevada, especially in such richness. Accompanying label identifies the green mineral as erinite. There is no such mineral as "erinite" (Erinite is a synonym of Chalcophyllite). It is now a discredited species name. Someone may find this of historic interest here on this old specimen! Ex. George Elling Collection.

8 x 7.5 x 2.5 cm. We had some of these amazing limonite specimens in auctions awhile back, and they were fiercely bid on. We spent 4 months after that trying to track down the Chinese guy who had them, and arranged to meet the Chinese guy who had them in Tucson. There, he had about 65 specimens - the great majority of which were ugly, but about 6 or 7 of which had the amazing iridescence you see here. We had to buy the entire lot of 65 to get the good ones - and we were later able to pick up a handful more. But, we have not seen any since. The luster of these is just unreal, particularly considering that chemically, limonite is basically the same as rust! The surface actually looks hardly natural; it is so shiny and weirdly bumpy - unlike any other mineral I have personally seen.

8.8 x 7.3 x 3.0 cm. A STRIKING, 3.0 cm, smoky GEM and unusually twinned cerussite crystal aesthetically set on a very hackly, dark rust-brown crust of goethite from Tsumeb. The elongated, vertical goethite "wall" next to the cerussite is a starkly, complimentary feature. Choice Tsumeb material from the George Elling Collection, which is not diminished by trivial edge wear at the highest corner of the cerussite, as you can see. An old specimen, probably from the upper oxidized zone of this world famous and now-closed mine.

Goethite from Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-140524a.jpg]

8.1 x 4.9 x 3.4 cm. An old collection card which appears to be from 1974 came with this strange, other-worldly looking specimen of goethite from Mexico, that took this distinctive form at this locality. Its surface looks like shiny black bubbles.

Goethite from Mun. de Mapimí, Durango, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-142321a.jpg]

8.0 x 7.6 x 4.0 cm. Goethite comes in all sorts of forms, including some very boring ones - but while this may not be the paragon of beauty in the mind of some collectors these Mapimi goethites are certainly anything but boring. This is a rich piling up of silky black botryoidal forms, pretty much solid goethite, with a little quartz attached. Does not look quite like anything else!

12.7 x 11.9 x 6.4 cm. Goethite comes in so many forms, sometimes just ugly and boring, other times just plain WEIRD. This type from Chihuahua falls into the "weird" category - a pocket of piled-up, hollow stalactitic tubes as it has cast and replaced selenite, with the luster and color of chocolate. Acquired by B.E. Lockhart in 1972.

15.9 x 10.9 x 10.1 cm. A couple of years back, we spent 6 months trying to track down the Chinese guy who had these amazing iridescent limonites. We found him outside a hotel at Tucson. There, he had about 65 specimens - the great majority of which were ugly, but some of which had the incredible iridescence and luster you see here. We had to take the entire lot of 65 to get the good ones. This is one of the largest from the find. The micro-botryoidal surface shimmers with an amazing spectral array of colors that look almost unreal! Note that there is no more of this around!

Mimetite, Goethite, Gypsum from Santa Eulalia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdán, Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-152693a.jpg]

6.5 x 4.1 x 1.7 cm. An exceptionally aesthetic pseudomorph from the famed Santa Eulalia District of Mexico. Sparkly, botryoidal, tan mimetite covers a sharp and complete all-around goethite after gypsum crystal on mimetite-covered goethite matrix. The back of the pseudo has a very distinctive groove and the lightly contacted termination reveals the inner core of goethite. Certainly not a detraction, but in fact, a "revelation". This is an oddity - have not seen the like before. Ex. Brent Lockhart Collection.
