A nice-sized, SHARP galena crystal of some significance because it is from the OLD lead district in northern Illinois, predating the discovery of the more abundant Missouri lead belts mined in the 1900s. This is certainly from the 1800s or early 1900s. The number painted upon the crystal's backside matches the label (whichnotes the presence of very small associations on the back, as well) Valid, antique crystals of galena, from Galena, are super-rare and this is not only a valid one, but a huge crystal in good condition for the locality. Some minor damage but all things considered, and its age probably prior to 1900, its not bad at all! I have not brightened it chemically by cleaning it, to preserve the antique look.

A hand-sized, SHARP galena crystal of some significance because it is from the old lead district in northern Illinois, predating the discovery of the more abundant Missouri lead belt. Valid, antique crystals of galena from Galena are super-rare and this is not only a valid one, but a huge crystal in good condition for the locality. This composite crystal , consisting of a smaller cube in the back merging into this beautiful cuboctohedron, weighs 9 pounds. It is mostly complete on the back, as well. I have not brightened it chemically by cleaning it, to preserve the antique look.

PREMU-J4D08 - Linarite on Galena altering to Anglesite - SOLD
Blanchard Mine, Bingham, Socorro County, New Mexico, USA

thumbnail, 2.9 x 2.5 x 1.6 cm
share specimen

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Intense blue linarites are a rarity from anywhere, and are the most sought-after specimens from the Blanchard. They are at their best when the acicular crystals gain a 3-dimensional visual aspect by forming on a euhedral crystal of galena, as they have done here. The linarite-covered galena is accented by quartz, and there is minor anglesite intermixed with the linarite on the surface of the galena crystal which is in the process of pseudomorphing to anglesite entirely.

ex. Dr. Mark Feinglos Collection A validated specimen of this ultra-rare silver-lead-arsenic sulfide species from Lengenbach. Mark exchanged it from Dr. Jaroslav Hyrsl who in turn obtained it in trade from the Natural History Museum in Bern, Switzerland, in about 1995. Although microcrystalline, the specimen has some display value - more than most such. The two arrows point to the marrite microxls (one or two at each arrow). The rest is galena. The marrite is dull on the surface, as opposed to the galena, which is bright. Really microscope stuff, but very rare, and a silver mineral, so likely of interest to some folks. (TYPE LOCALITY)

Classic, sharp twinned crystal of galena with minor pyrite from the old lead mining district of Tipperary County, Ireland. The galena has as great bright metallic luster with an interesting twin plane along the terminations. Some of the pyrite is also crystalline, with a shiny bright luster. These mines go back hundreds of years and crystals like this are very difficult to obtain. A superb miniature, for display purposes, as well! Currently, the actual minesite is operating as a business so trespassing is strong unadvised especially considering all the specimens are long gone (says MinDat)

Fluorite (spinel-twinned) with Galena and Calcite from Gibralter Mine, Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/new09/rom01d.jpg]

Perched aesthetically on a contrasting matrix of silvery galena and stark white calcite, is a cluster of intergrown, glassy and gemmy spinel-twinned crystals of fluorite. The fluorite cluster measures 6 cm across. Minor, white calcite crystals, to 0.75 cm in length are associated with the galena crystals that reach 0.5 cm across. This is an appealing combo specimen from Naica with lots of contrast. The aesthetic perch of the fluorite atop the stalk of matrix makes it unusual, as does the twinning so evident in the crystal itself. The crystal atop is remarkably in good shape and not repaired. This is a classic color, a pastel green hue, for the locale. Probably it was mined in the 1980s. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. MUCH more gemmy in person! Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen.

This is a solid, intergrown galena specimen that is simply stunning in person for its super-bright metallic lustre and complex crystal forms. But to me, the key ingredient for this becoming a world class galena specimen, is that all the crystals (to 5cm) have a slightly melted appearance and the piece overall is UNIQUE amongst thousands of other galena specimens for this effect. For accent there is a druse of white quartz crystals on some of the galena crystals. This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen.

In appearance this galena specimen resembles an oreo cookie with galena on both sides of a calcite layer. Intergrown, splendent crystals of metallic galena form the bottom/matrix of this piece, draped by a vein of colorless, sparkling, calcite crystals. Topping the specimen are large, complexly formed crystals of galena, to 2.5 cm in length. The combination makes a dramatic contrast to display the galena, and a true mineral oddity in its overall appearance ! This specimen was on loaned exhibit in the University of Arizona Museum for over a decade until my purchase of this collection in 2008. Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen. Great aesthetics highlight this combination specimen with a matrix of galena. Aesthetically perched high on the galena is a single, glassy and gemmy, cuboctahedron of emerald green fluorite, measuring 3.5 cm across. Wreathlike clusters of drusy, ivory colored calcite, surround the fluorite and accent it. The balance of the fluorite with the galenas also adds to make this a wonderful combo specimen for the locale, with most of its classic species on one piece. MORE GEMMY IN PERSON! Comes with custom lucite base already made for the specimen.

A quote from Ed's own label card: "This may not be the most beautiful specimen in the Collection, but it may be the most important. This one should go into a museum!! From teh collection of Dr. Geier, the mine mineralogist for 25 years. I purchased this specimen from Miriam and Julius Zweibel who brough ti tback from Tsumeb in 1978 specifically for me. Crystals of galena are uncommon from Tsumeb and rarely reach 1 cm in size...a quote from the Min Record Tsumeb issue, page 25. "

These crystals reach up to 1.8 cm! They feature sharp crystals showin gthe cubic form modified by octohedral faces. Associated microminerals include Cerussite, Anglesite, Mimetite, and Quartz. Despite all its production of lead, galena was indeed rare throughout Tsumeb's history! Truly an amazing and important Miniature for any collection of Tsumeb material. Purchased from the Zweibels in 1978

This is a specimen I first handled in the late 90s and had tried to get back for years, before I was able to trade it back from Joe Freilich around 2002. Then I sold it again and got it back again, last month. It is SPECTACULAR! This specimen is one of my absolute favorites from the find of ice-clear, water-clean, transparent fluorites that camne out briefly from this mine. It is a large, impressive piece with extremely high-quality crystals, showing good relief. The largest crystal measures to 4 cm on edge! There are pristine, or as near to as you could ask for anyhow. The fluorites rest on a beautfiful matrix culminating in an elegant and contrasting galena crystal that is elongated and twists from left to right behind and underneath the fluorites. You can look right through the fluorite to the galena. MOST specimens from this pocket were simply "on matrix" and but this is on matrix with STYLE. I had not seen others even remotely similar. Also, most specimens from this pocket were stacks of closely touching crystals and this is unusual for the isolation of the crystals, and their relative individuality. It is a spectacular specimen for a colorless crystal, and has always been one of my alltime favorite Dalnegorsk specimens

Galena is certainly common enough, but a large specimen combining the quality and aesthetics you see here...that is most uncommon! This piece features a pristine, 3-dimensional, SUPERB galena crystal sitting perfectly atop matrix, showing from ALL angles 360-degrees around, and perched amongst a nest of complementing calcites. Without the calcite accent, it would be a little more boring and typical. With the calcites and the placement of the crystal together, it is one of the finest for its size I have ever seen, amongst thousands of such pieces over 20 years. The galena measures 5.5 x 5 x 5 cm in size and is perfect! IT IS MUCH MORE LUSTROUS IN PERSON, TOO!
