Check out the AMAZING architectural growth pattern of this intricately hoppered galena crystal from Dalnegorsk! One wonders just what conditions in the pocket caused this ornate modification. The crystal sits on a bed of quartz crystals included by chlorite. The galena measures 5 cm across. 10.0 x 6.0 x 5.6cm

Rhodonite, Apatite, Galena from Broken Hill, Yancowinna Co., New South Wales, Australia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-52618a.jpg]

A CLASSIC, old-time and UNCOMMON combination specimen from the famous Broken Hill Mine of Australia. Gemmy and glassy, blue apatite crystals and GEMMY to opaque red rhodonite crystals to 2.4 cm are nicely placed in the galena-rich matrix. The beautiful, gemmy, blue apatite crystal, on the front of the specimen, is 7 mm. Minor scattered damage, not that detracting at all, is certainly bearable on this fine old-timer. Ex Richard Hauck Collection. I have never seen another such combo for sale!!! 6.4 x 6.0 x 4.8 cm

Fluorite, Galena from Elmwood mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-52738a.jpg]

This superb specimen was expensive when I bought it, and you can see why. These stunning combo specimens from the Elmwood can no longer be taken for granted with the mine now closed. This is a galena crystal that is complete all the way around, with striking hoppered growth, and with a jewel-like, pristine transparent purple fluorite on top. You could hardly ask for a cuter Elmwood piece. BETTER IN PERSON, TOO! WILL fit in a Perky box, for the thumbnail collector. According to Rory Howell who was the Mine Superintendent when these were found, they came from the O.G. Heading & only about 150 or so of these Galena/Fluorite associations were found in the mid 1980’s. Supposedly this was the only place in the mine that yielded this association. 3 x 2.7 x 1.7 cm

This is a specimen I first handled in the late 90s and had tried to get back for years, before I was able to trade it back from Joe Freilich around 2002. Then I sold it again and got it back again, last month. It is SPECTACULAR! This specimen is one of my absolute favorites from the find of ice-clear, water-clean, transparent fluorites that camne out briefly from this mine. It is a large, impressive piece with extremely high-quality crystals, showing good relief. The largest crystal measures to 4 cm on edge! There are pristine, or as near to as you could ask for anyhow. The fluorites rest on a beautfiful matrix culminating in an elegant and contrasting galena crystal that is elongated and twists from left to right behind and underneath the fluorites. You can look right through the fluorite to the galena. MOST specimens from this pocket were simply "on matrix" and but this is on matrix with STYLE. I had not seen others even remotely similar. Also, most specimens from this pocket were stacks of closely touching crystals and this is unusual for the isolation of the crystals, and their relative individuality. It is a spectacular specimen for a colorless crystal, and has always been one of my alltime favorite Dalnegorsk specimens 10.8 x 8.5 x 5 cm

Galena is certainly common enough, but a large specimen combining the quality and aesthetics you see here...that is most uncommon! This piece features a pristine, 3-dimensional, SUPERB galena crystal sitting perfectly atop matrix, showing from ALL angles 360-degrees around, and perched amongst a nest of complementing calcites. Without the calcite accent, it would be a little more boring and typical. With the calcites and the placement of the crystal together, it is one of the finest for its size I have ever seen, amongst thousands of such pieces over 20 years. The galena measures 5.5 x 5 x 5 cm in size and is perfect! IT IS MUCH MORE LUSTROUS IN PERSON, TOO! 18.5 x 14.8 x 8.6 cm

Galena from Neudorf, Harzgerode, Harz Mts, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany [db_pics/mdpics/MD-54372a.jpg]

This incredible old German galena is a significant piece even without pedigree (more on that later). It features textbook, 3-dimensional, lustrous, bright crystals of galena from teh single most famous locale in the world for the species as far as most historians are concerned. Neudorf set the standard for 300 years. Good specimens, and specimens of large size in particular, are phenomenally rare today and I am told must be at least 150 years old. This is a dramatic cluster of intergrown crystals. This impressive large specimen has Carl Bosch's original backed vellum label from the late 1800's, embossed with gold print, indicating that it was in his personal exhibit cases and not "in the drawers." Very few specimens had this high honor, of being exhibited in the home of this most prominent collector of the late 1800s! Very few specimens today remain associated with such labels, given the movements of the pieces over time in and out of the Smithsonian. It was exchanged from the Smithsonian by Bill Pinch, who kept it til exchanging it to me recently. 9 x 6.9 x 3.4 cm

Sphalerite, Galena, Calcite, Quartz from Hunan Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-54385a.jpg]

In the last few years, there has been a plethora of new material from China. However, this is without question one of the nicest combo pieces I have seen of ANY mineral. They came out, mostly through Dan Weinrich, in the late 1990s and really set the market on fire with the vibrant color and lustre of these sharply crystallized sphalerites. The beautiful contrasting matrix is a crust of micro quartz crystals over thin rock shards, giving a uniform sparkle and lustre to the background: vibrant red and white colors contrast where the quartz lifts off from the matrix a bit to be clear or takes on the red of the hematite-stained matrix underneath. Crystals of gray galena, some spinel twinned and aesthetically perched on quartz are, in turn, bracketed by two, lustrous, red, gemmy, sphalerite crystals of about the maximal size for the find. The largest displayed sphalerite crystal measures 3 cm across. The largest galena crystal is almost 1 cm in length. To top off this remarkable specimen, two, frosted, creamy white, calcite crystals poke their terminated faces straight at the viewer , midway between the dominant sphalerite crystals. These calcite crystals reach 2.5 cm long. The piece is completely covered with sphalerite around to the underside (lower-left), as well. This specimen has a huge WOW factor! 14.2 x 9.1 x 6.2 cm

Witherite, Galena from Brownley Hill Mine (Bloomsberry Horse Level), Nenthead, Alston Moor District, North Pennines, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK [db_pics/mdpics/MD-54390a.jpg]

This is a 3-dimensional, translucent, lustrous crystal of witherite from the Cumbrian ore fields. It is also rather large at a whopping 6 cm in length! There are a few gray galena crystals attached on the side. The galena crystals reach 1.0 cm across and provide a nice accent for the combination. I have to say, I have not personllay seen an English witherite in association with galena from here before. It makes sense, just haven't seen it. This is a very aesthetic, nice-sized specimen of some significance for the species, for which this was a very important locality in the 1800s. Better in person! 6 x 5.3 x 4 cm

The crystals are ALL ornately architectural, with hoppered growth, and they sit in a concave nest of crystallized sphalerite. The gray of the galenas contrasts with the lustrous blackish hue of the sphalerite. SHOWY! sadly, the complexity is better in person than in the pics...but that means the winner WILL bew happy, i assure you. its one of the wierdest and most interesting galenas i have seen in a long time 11.1 x 9.9 x 6.4cm
