Galena, Sphalerite from Federal Gorden Mine, Picher Field, Tri-State District, Ottawa Co., Oklahoma, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-151607a.jpg]

6.2 x 3.1 x 2.7 cm. A sharp galena crystal of 1.5 cm is perched on a matrix of cemented rock shards covered with dark wine-red crystals of sphalerite - a classic combo from here. The corners of the galenas show fascinating modifications, from flat bevels to these weird projections in various modifications of the cubic form. Ex. George Feist Collection.

7.8 x 6.2 x 3.9 cm. An old Tri-State galena with not only a very sharp 2.2 cm cube, but near it, three OCTAHEDRAL crystals! Unusual and interesting to find these two forms side by side! From the important Midwest collection of George Feist.

6.9 x 5.0 x 4.5 cm. These incredibly elegant hollowed-out galena crystals were the surprise hits of both the Denver and Munich shows. They formed from a natural process of etching and are thus termed "skeletal" crystals. This very well-balanced matrix galena specimen is covered by a vuggy bed of green, chloritic to colorless, gemmy, lustrous quartz crystals, to 9 mm long. Perched aesthetically on the quartz are a cluster of three lustrous, skeletal, battleship-gray galena crystals, to 1.4 cm across. Truly dramatic and unusual! This SUPER piece is viewable from all 4 sides! More 3-dimensional in person, too! The mine is closed. Expect few more to turn up.

Galena from Silvermines District, Co. Tipperary, Ireland [db_pics/mdpics/MD-154996a.jpg]

5.7 x 4.1 x 3.3 cm. This specimen is from a small find made by the late Richard Barstow in the mid-1970s when he happened to, by luck, come across this mine as they were blasting and had broken into a pocket of incredible galenas which he was allowed to take away. All good specimens in modern collections, I am told, came from this serendipitous find. This piece was sold by him in 1980 and consists of a remarkably equant cuboctahedral crystal (with such development, this is the rarest crystal style from the place), with a more octahedral cuboctahedral crystal perched atop and peeking over, all perched on matrix! It is as fine a miniature as I could imagine from what I have seen, and is again for this particularly well developed crystal habit a notable piece. From the miniature/rarities suite of Lawrence Conklin, who exchanged it from the American Museum of Natural History.

7.6 x 5.5 x 2.6 cm. An EXCELLENT and AESTHETIC combination plate from the famous Commodore Mine at Creede, Colorado. VERY GEMMY and LUSTROUS, twinned, olive-green sphalerite crystals to 1.4 cm are RICHLY scattered on sulfide matrix and are nicely accented by 5 blocky, matte-gray galena crystals and a couple of brassy chalcopyrite crystals. A small lot of these was offered at Tucson a few ago and they quickly disappeared.

4.5 x 4.5 x 2.8 cm. A showy, excellent and classic cluster of lustrous, metallic galena cubes from the famous Sweetwater Mine of Missouri’s Viburnum Trend. The large, textbook, 2.9 cm galena cubes is damage-free and is nicely accented by smaller crystals on two sides. Ex. Feist collection.

6.5 x 5.0 x 2.1 cm. Franckeite is one of the rarest sulfosalts in the world. This specimen is a very rich, incredibly rare, superb quality, crystallized specimen of the triclinic lead, tin, iron, antimony sulfosalt Franckeite consisting of somewhat "sword"-shaped crystals oriented into spherical aggregates. The piece is associated with grey, metallic Galena crystals and one small, but very rare crystal of Potosiite, which is the small "curved" crystal in the close-up photo below. This piece is a great small cabinet specimen for somebody looking to own a very rare and displayable mineral specimen. A good opportunity to acquire something that is rarely offered in the open market for a great price. Franckeite and Potosiite belong to the only group of minerals that forms in naturally "round" or "cylindrical" shaped crystals. This specimen is over 30 years old and was part of the best find of the material. There were only a handful of good specimens, and well crystallized display pieces like this are few and far between. Ex. Brian Kosnar.

5.8 x 5.6 x 3.9 cm. This 2.5-cm galena crystal from Eastern Europe is absolutely bizarre - actually a compound crystal that has formed as a thin sheet from hundreds of small stacked cubes! You can see sticking out of the top a little burst of calcite crystals that contain tiny inclusions of galena. This unique galena sits on a plate of platy white calcites.

This EXCELLENT and AESTHETIC combination specimen consists of two, lustrous, brass-yellow pyrite rosettes nicely perched on sculptural, etched galena. 10.9 x 8.1 x 5.3 cm. Silicified limestone with a druse of sparkling white quartz is the matrix for a wonderful assemblage! This piece and others here feature some of the best unaltered galena I have yet seen from Bingham, and were collected by Ray DeMark on his claims in the area in the summer of 2007. This piece shows off frosted, translucent, lavender colored fluorite crystals to 1.6 cm across. Emplaced on the fluorite is a startlingly contrasting cluster of lustrous , metallic- gray, galena crystals which individually reach 3.25 cm across and look as if they were just "put on" and left to dry. They look fresh and bright, unaltered to anglesite as are most galenas I have seen from this area. They are remarkably freestanding.

11.5 x 10.7 x 8.9 cm. Intergrown cubes of intensely lavender, translucent, fluorite, to 1.75 cm across, completely cover a white quartz druse which in turn, is emplaced on a matrix of siliceous limestone. Aesthetically perched on some of the fluorite crystals are cubes of lustrous, battleship gray, galena, to 1.5 cm across. The contrast is stark and striking, and also highly unusual for the mine! They look fresh and bright, unaltered to anglesite as are most galenas I have seen from this area. This piece and others here feature some of the best unaltered galena I have yet seen from Bingham, and were collected by Ray DeMark on his claims in the area in the summer of 2007.
