5.4 x 3.6 x 2.9 cm. We have been bringing you some really fine Bulgarian galenas of different forms. This is a classic modified cube, with a gorgeous metallic sheen to it - on a matrix of pyrite and quartz crystals that accent it beautifully.

Galena, Sphalerite, Marcasite from Barr Mine, Vinegar Hill, Treece, Picher Field, Tri-State District, Cherokee Co., Kansas, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-148273b.jpg]

13.4 x 12.4 x 7.1 cm. An old label cut from a larger list says "from Barr Mine, Treece, Kansas, Boodle Lane, November 6, 1937". So this large and impressive old Tri-State specimen has a very specific date and locality to it! It consists of sharp cubes of galena on a glittering mass of microcrystalline, deep red sphalerite (the maroon color shows up under strong light), with minor associated marcasite. It seems to have formed as a thick knob around dolomite which you can now see in the center of the underside of the specimen.

6.3 x 5.4 x 3.0 cm. These incredibly elegant hollowed-out galena crystals were the surprise hits of both the Denver and Munich shows. They formed from a natural process of etching and are thus termed "skeletal" crystals. This well-balanced matrix galena specimen is covered by a bed of green, chloritic to colorless, gemmy, lustrous quartz crystals, to 1.2 cm long. Perched aesthetically on the quartz are two lustrous, skeletal, battleship-gray galena crystals, to 1.2 cm across. Truly dramatic and unusual! More 3-dimensional in person, too! The mine is closed. Expect no more.

5.0 x 5.0 x 4.3 cm. A SUPERB and RARE cluster of sharp, moderate lustrous, lead-gray, spinel-twinned galena crystals with a single, sharp galena octahedron from the famous Brushy Creek Mine of Missouri’s Viburnum Trend. The vertical spinels are 4.0 cm across and the faces are dusted with marcasite. Very seldom available and this is a really good one. Ex. George Feist Collection.

11.1 x 7.1 x 4.2 cm. An old Tri-State combo piece - featuring a pristine, doubly-terminated crystal of calcite exposed end-to-end on a matrix of galena, quartz crystals and little chalcopyrites. Ex. Feist collection.

7.2 x 6.9 x 5.5 cm. An extremely impressive HAND-SIZED specimen of galena from Eastern Europe, featuring two very large, tightly intergrown crystals with large, architectural faces. One quartz crystal is embedded along a side face of the specimen, and another is sticking up right through the middle of a face! The galena grew right around it. The galena has a sort of silky, brushed-steel luster.

5 x 4.7 x 3 cm. Classic Naica - complex and beautiful Galenas on a bed of lovely euhedral Calcite rhombs. Largest galena is 1.5 cm, and the Calcites are in the .2-.3 cm range. The Galenas have superb luster and beautiful mirror-like to striated faces. Excellent and very aesthetic.

11 x 10.7 x 8 cm. Another classic. This combination piece from the Viburnum Trend has three complete gemmy Calcites (plus two small ones cleaved, that actually add color and sparkle), the largest of which is 2.8 cm and doubly terminated! The matrix is a series of very fine Calcites rhombs and Galenas that completely cover the knobs of country rock. Very aesthetic.

2.6 x 2.1 x 2 cm. The true holy grail of the famous Blanchard Mine is the highly sought-after Linarite. The world’s greatest find of Linarite came from there in 1980, and it is been a target ever since. This Galena cube has a very rich coating of deep-blue Linarite on two of its faces, and one crystal is about .2-.3 cm in length. A lovely and choice thumbnail.

11.5 x 7 x 5.3 cm. A very nice specimen of the early alteration of Galena to Anglesite. These sparkly and very attractive pieces are always a favorite target at the Blanchard Mine, but rarely do you fine them this good (finding them, then getting them out, of the silicified limestone is quite a chore). The largest of these attractive Galenas is 2.2 cm.

9.3 x 9.2 x 4.2 cm. Classic Weardale. Lovely purple zoned twinned and single Fluorites with very good luster and gemminess in combination with attractive rounded Galenas. Superb fluorescence.. The largest Fluorite cube is 2.1 cm on edge. There are some cleaved corners, but you gotta know this is an old-timer! Very lovely, very aesthetic!

6 x 5.5 x 3.8 cm. Linarite on Galena from the superb 2007 find at the Blanchard Mine in New Mexico. The aesthetics are excellent, and the camera cannot quite capture the overall beauty of this piece. A very good specimen.

6.7 x 4.5 x 3.6 cm. The galenas on this Eastern European specimen have taken on all sorts of interesting variations on the basic cubic form, making it fascinating from a crystallographic standpoint. Quartz crystals stick up here and there amongst the galenas, and there is a bit of accenting golden chalcopyrite as well.

13.1 x 10.5 x 6.8 cm. The label accompanying this English galena specimen says "from an old collection, circa 1890", and its appearance (and marcasite association) would lend credence to its being mined in the Cumberland district at this time. It is a truly impressive specimen for its size and richness, with DOZENS of cubes piled up all over this knob of matrix, measuring to 1.5 cm. The little golden marcasites have grown on the faces of some of the galenas.
