GEMS-086 - Friedelite - $ 150 SOLD
Franklin, New Jersey, USA
thumbnail, 7.3 x 7.3 mm ; 0.92 carats

Friedelite - Franklin, New Jersey, USAFriedelite - Franklin, New Jersey, USA

With the hundreds of species found at Franklin and Sterling Hill, there are only a few that are worthy to yield cut stones. A few that come to mind are Willemite, Zincite and Friedelite. Most species from Franklin are either too tiny, too devoid of color or too freaking rare to even consider cutting into gems. Friedelite is a cool phyllosilicate and the historic mining district at Franklin is probably the only place in the world to yield gemmy enough crystals for faceting. This stone has a very pleasing characteristic reddish-orange hue and a somewhat hazy appearance. This is definitely in the rare category, and with such an attractive color combined with the fact that the stone is nearly a full carat in weight, it is a superb stone for collectors.

Friedelite in a rich carpet of wonderful golden crystals covering display face on BOTH sides of this specimen! These crystals are relatively large and individually eye-visible, to just over 1 mm in size. The piece can actually be trimmed in two nice halves. The matrix is a typical mix of franklinite/calcite/willemite and is highly fluorescent. 6 x 4 x 2.5 cm

This is an unusually large and rich specimen of Friedelite in a rich carpet of wonderful golden crystals covering amost a solid 7 x 4 cm of the display face! These crystals are relatively large and individually eye-visible, to 1 mm in size I'd say. They are smaller but brighter and more lustrous than on the above specimen. More coverage is scattered about the back as well, so the piece can actually be trimmed in two nice halves. The matrix is a typical mix of franklinite/calcite/willemite and is highly fluorescent. 11 x 6 x 4 cm

7.1 x 6.2 x 2.6 cm. Friedelite is a relatively rare silicate that is only found in a few localities worldwide. There are hundreds of species that occur around the Franklin mining district, and Friedelite is among the most classic and well known. This piece hosts many small (less than 1 mm), sharp, lustrous, brown crystals of Friedelite with an unknown white mineral on typical Franklin matrix. This piece is from the famous New Jersey collection of Richard A. Kosnar, and was once in the collection of John E. MacDonald.
