4.9 x 2.8 x 1.4 cm. This pretty mini came out of the collection of Illinois collector Ross Lillie. The accompanying label says it came from "advance mining in 1-83 from the northwest edge main ore body." What makes it really cool is this gemmy, tabular golden BARYTE, which beautifully complements the zoned purple fluorites decorated with little calcites.
6.4 x 5.6 x 4.7 cm. The modified cubes of fluorite here look like a variety of cut-glass jewels - they have all sorts of pretty frosted bevels and other face modifications, and glass-clear "windows" into the gemmy interiors. The crystals measure to 1.5 cm.
10.2 x 8.1 x 5.2 cm. Another fine Dal’negorsk fluorite from a different time in the mining, when it was producing the famous "water-clear" crystals, sharp as razors. At the top of this specimen is a good example of one of these, which despite a little edge-wear shows very clearly why these are so famous for their clarity and sharpness. It measures 1.5 cm across. Smaller fluorites with various levels of clarity are scattered about. The matrix is finely-crystallized sphalerite.
15.9 x 10.2 x 5.2 cm. A BIG, SHOWY specimen featuring large, intergrown crystals, to 4 centimeters across. They have these silky, shimmering surfaces due to intricate micro-stepping on the faces. The crystals are translucent, a pretty light green, on a matrix of snow-white quartz.
9.4 x 7.3 x 3.4 cm. This is a thin plate of quart, a ridge in the pocket that was exposed on both sides, allowing these pretty, silky octahedrons of fluorite to grow on both sides. Small new find!
7.2 x 6.4 x 4.4 cm. Two dozen or so crystals of fluorite to one centimeter, still partially embedded in the matrix, from re-mining efforts at the Rogerley over the past five years or so. HIGHLY FLUORESCENT!
14.2 x 8.4 x 5.4 cm. This big, rich Hardin County specimen has stuff going on ALL OVER it! On one side, it has these big, dark purple crystals (to 2.9 cm) - so dark in fact that this was called the Black Spar Mine and these were sometimes known as "black fluorites" - though under good light you can see that the crystals have golden centers and purple rinds, not unusual for many of the mines in this complex. On the other side of the specimen are gemmy, deep amber crystals of calcite to 2.5 cm. The plate of fluorite apparently came loose in the pocket, allowing the calcites to grow on the "back" side. Ex. Tom Weisner Collection.
5.2 x 4.2 x 4.2 cm. A classic, water-clear, "invisible", fluorite cube on a bit of galena and sphalerite matrix from Naica, Mexico. The very nearly pristine, highly lustrous and glassy cube has textbook stepped faces and the internal crazing gives awesome refractions, including rainbows! A very showy and neat Naica specimen.
6.5 x 5.3 x 3.0 cm. A STRIKING and SHOWY specimen of two, translucent, yellow-green fluorite botryoids very aesthetically nestled in a vuggy quartz crystal matrix from the famous Mahodari Quarry of India. The fluorite botryoids reach 3.0 cm and they look just like egg yolks, especially the two generation-growth fluorite botryoid on the left. This is one of the few localities in the world for botryoidal, truly acrystalline, fluorite.
7 x 5 x 3 cm. This is a rare example of the so-called baryte crosses, a strange phantom effect formed by a baryte crystal frozen inside of the fluorite. But before the baryte was enclosed, it was stricken by some dissolution effect that makes it appear, on looking closely, like a small white cross shape, inside the fluorite.
5.3 x 4.2 x 2.2 cm. A "fried-egg" fluorite, from this bizarre occurrence, which is actually truly botryoidal (meaning without crysatllization symmetry) in form. Beautiful color, translucency, and a nice perch on quartz make this a showy miniature. Ex. Charlie Key.
8.7 x 4.8 x 2.2 cm. A strange specimen of calcite-coated fluorite perched on amethyst. This is a rare association, and the stark contrast is beautiful and unusual. Ex. Charlie Key.
8.1 x 6.6 x 4.3 cm. Bizarre SHARP internal phantoms within these otherwise clear and colorless fluorites make this a unique specimen from any locale. Ex. Charlie Key.
8.7 x 5.7 x 4.3 cm. A riveting, INTENSE green fluorite specimen with gemmy, transparent, clear crystals that nevertheless are super saturated with color. Classic, high quality material from 1970s and 1980s workings here, not matched in today's specimens from the mine. Ex. Charlie Key.
2.9 x 2.4 x 1.3 cm. A really interesting modified cube of fluorite, 1.6 cm across, showing zoning of colors. Ex. Charlie Key.
