6.4 x 4.9 x 4.5 cm. Glassy-clear fluorite crystals to just over 2 cm on edge, very sharp, canted at various angles on a matrix of quartz and calcite.
6.7 x 5.1 x 3.4 cm. Though they stopped coming out long ago, Illinois fluorites are not uncommon on the market. However, those with a GLASSY luster, such as this one, are VERY hard to find. This cluster features crystals to 2.4 cm with bright golden-yellow interiors and an intense, thin line of dark purple separating the interior from a thin rind of light purple on the very outside.
7.9 x 7.1 x 2.6 cm. This specimen is from the recent finds at Naica (finished now, from what we know). What makes it such a wonderful specimen is not just the superb clarity, but more importantly, the exquisite FORM - this amazing compound crystal is stepped and beveled as though created by a glass artist! it has a beautiful glowing light pastel green in the interior. Just a super fluorite specimen from a significant locality!
12.1 x 6.5 x 4.8 cm. Good Elmwood specimens have disappeared with depressing speed since the closing of the mine. Here you have a BIG specimen that is extremely striking. What you cannot see here is the INTENSE purple color of the crystals; under good light, they are just magnificent. But what makes them extra-nice is that the sphalerite they sit on is not amorphous, but really well-crystallized, which adds a lot to the piece (the matrix is solid sphalerite, the zinc ore that was the reason for the mine in the first place). The fluorites measure up to 2.2 cm along the edge.
A MASSIVE, football-sized specimen with glowing color and total 100% translucency throughout! You'd swear it was Chinese in quality if you didn't trust Charlie that it came out of this old tin mine when he got his other Uis pieces! Weight is several kilos! When backlit, this is more intense green and rivals even Chinese material! It GLOWS. NO DAMAGE to the 3-dimensional display face. contacted only about the periphery 20.2 x 12.9 x 8.8 cm
16.4 x 15.4 x 8.3 cm. Here is a link to some cool pictures of this mid-century fluorite mining operation in the Tyrol mountains (it was mined for its fluorine content): http://www.sagen.at/doku/bergbau/Bergwerk_Rabenstein.html (you can cut and paste the URL into Google to see the article). This is a BIG, HEAVY specimen from the mining that was preserved as a specimen due to the fine nature of the crystals - translucent green crystals to 4 cm. Despite some nicks and a cleave or two, this is rare material and should be forgiven these detractions due to the extreme difficulty of finding a specimen on the market, not to mention one of this size and richness. It came out of the Wein Collection, full of fine and hard-to-get European specimens, which was dispersed last year.
13.3 x 6.7 x 3.9 cm. An extremely unusual fluorite specimen from the new find at the Okarusu Mine - combining TWO hues of fluorite - yellow crystals on an earlier generation of purple ones! The one prominent crystal with smaller crystals intergrown all around its sides is extremely striking on the background of darker fluorite! This find has turned up fluorites in all sorts of colors, but this one is unique.
10.4 x 6.9 x 4.4 cm. An old-timer from Mexico - a large, euhedral crystal of celestine from the Plateros Mine, translucent and nearly colorless, with sharp faces all around (contact only on the bottom). Very uncommon on the market now. Check out the tiny, gemmy stepped compound crystal of purple fluorite on one of the faces!
7.6 x 6.4 x 4.4 cm. A plate of transparent, creamy-yellow fluorite from Cornwall - an old piece with a Schortmanns label. You can see some little blooms of calcite, and some little dark sulfides sprinkled about. There are crystals on the back side of this specimen as well.
1.4 x 1.2 x 1.0 cm. An EXCELLENT fluorite thumbnail of a gemmy, lightly frosted, lustrous, rose-pink cuboctahedron from the Argentiere Glacier at Chamonix, France. Cuboct fluorites from this area are RARE. This is CLASSIC and very desirable material from a sought-after locality. From a small find of 2004.
14.5 x 11.4 x 6.1 cm. From the new find at the Okarusu Mine - not only a BIG, RICH plate of fine fluorite, but uniquely, decorated with white quartzes! These big crystals measure up to 3.5 cm across the edge. We shot them under natural light, but put this specimen under strong light and it lights up the most unbelievable glowing green/blue color! There is no matrix - it is solid crystal, so the light can come right through. Note the natural corner modifications - that is NOT damage, this piece is in superb condition!
16.4 x 7.9 x 3.4 cm. The mining of these pink fluorites is OVER now! We were lucky to have a relationship that allowed us access to the good specimens of this material. Until these pink fluorites were discovered in Mexico, Peru and the Alps were the only sources for pink fluorite, and the cost of a specimen such as this was (and still is) astronomical from those localities. These octahedrons measure up to 2.2 cm on edge.
7.4 x 3.6 x 3.5 cm. As mentioned previously, the new fluorite find at the Okarusu has turned up a wonderful variety of colors, some never seen before. Look at THIS one: a cluster of super-sharp crystals that have the familiar light green around the edges, but with scarlet phantoms in their interiors! The crystals measure to 1.5 cm along the edge, and are in superb condition!
7.2 x 5.4 x 5.1 cm. The fluorite crystals in these pics look quite washed-out, but in person they are a prettier and more saturated green (just hard to photograph). They are quite transparent, with naturally modified corners. They measure to 2.2 cm along the edge. What makes them look particularly nice is how they sit on this curving matrix with a coating of contrasting, snowy micro-quartz.
7.2 x 6.9 x 1.9 cm. The yellow "fried egg" botryoidal fluorites from Nasik in India are extremely popular with collectors. These "green eggs" (sorry, no ham!) come from Mahodari are more rare. This is a perfect 2-cm "egg", next to a smaller partial one, on a flat sheety matrix of grey micro-quartz.
