Found by minor Cliff Wilkie in 1990, this piece is thought to be the finest Frazer's Hush fluorite produced in the modern era (according to folks who know more context than I). It is a whopping 28 cm across, and is as pristine as you can wish for. It has SHARP, penetration twinned fluorites to 2.2 cm in size. The surface is GLASSY...not just lustrous, but really smooth and glassy as you seldom see. Unusually for the mine, the larger and deeper purple twinned crystals sit with some isolation upon a carpet of smaller, paler fluorites - giving more 3-dimensional relief and accent than you normally can expect. Within one week of being found, Patricia Greenbank had rushed to the mine to see it and paid the miner his (high) price to have it for Lindsay's collection. This large specimen is one of the finest fluorites to come out of England, according to many who have seen it, and has a stunning, grape-juice color to it. When I first saw it , on his patio in the sun, I was simply stunned. It is that amazing. Even in daylight, it lights up brilliantly, fluoresceing in even the faintest of natural or halogen lighting. The color is simply shocking. It is deeper yet than even the normal, already fine, Frazers Hush shade of purple. For me, it was one of the great prizes in the collection, and is a fluorite hard to compete with. Photos simply cannot convey the sheer impact of holding this piece in sunlight. The top photo shows a closeup of a region of the piece in daylight, glowing purple. The lower-left photo shows the geometry well, but does not do justice to the color in real light as opposed to studio lighting which actually dims its intensity a bit (Joe Budd photos). The lower-right photo was taken by Lindsay Greenbank in England, before I trimmed and cleaned it, and shows the color a bit more accurately as it appears in normal light. Illustrated in "Classic Minerals of Northern England," as a two-page spread showing the piece at actual size.

Sharp and aesthetic, this light pink Fluorite is an impressive 1.5 cm on edge. And it sits perfectly up on the matrix. One of the rare aspects of the Fluorites on matrix from the Argentiere Glacier is that they are found on Adularia a rare association. For a Competition level thumbnail, this is an OUSTANDING example because it has balance, and is on matrix; and really could not be any bigger and still be a thumbnail specimen. the thing about truly great matrix thumbnails is its easy to find loose singles of many things, but a balanced matrix makes the piece here, as well as in larger specimens

LW107 - Fluorite - SOLD
Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, USA

small cabinet, 9.2 x 6.8 x 4.8 cm
share specimen

ex.  Martin Lewadny

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Lovely and completely GEMMY modified cube of Fluorite from a world-famous locality. The clear corners are classic for Elmwood, as is the yellow-tinted interior and the purple modified surface. Even the base of the pyramid has a remarkably water-clear window into the interior. You don’t often see Elmwood Fluorites this clear.

Top-notch large single Fluorite crystal dusted with tiny Pyrites inside and out. This is absolutely classic for Illinois: superb luster, yellow core and purple to clear edges. Also, it is gemmier than you normally find from Illinois, especially for this size! There is a minor cleave in the rough lower corner, and the tiniest of dings in the upper corner. Neither makes any difference at all to the overall aesthetics, which are terrific.

The mines of this district are famous for the interestingly etched Fluorites that have been produced over the years. Here we have a pair of etched crystals that are completely gemmy from end to end, with beautiful cubic terminations that are clear and lightly purple. You won’t often find a single crystal this good, let alone an attached pair. The etching also made it very difficult to photograph – this specimen is much better (gemmier and more lustrous) in person.

You simply do not find Fluorite crystals this GEM-clear as often as you think, and certainly not as often as you would like. All seven of the distinct Fluorite cubes are light green, absolutely water-clear, and pristine. The largest Fluorite is 1.3 cm on edge and, combined with the very attractive modified blades of Calcite, make this an amazing specimen.

Many of the Fluorites of Elmwood are famous for their mysterious elongated growth patterns caused by selective resoprtion of molecules from the edges, leaving gem corners intact upon elongated stalks of etched-looking fluorite. The interiors are usually gemmy, too. This fine crystal has some of everything – in fact, all you could want, in a single floater: it is completely gemmy, it has a superb glassy luster on the main faces, and it has attractive and very fine stepped growth on the elongated faces. The base is even flat enough for the crystals to stand upright. A very nice example of a unique worldwide fluorite style, from a famous location.

Very simply, this is a truly unusual single crystal. It is completely gemmy, has excellent purple color, and the main faces are ever-so-slightly stepped windows into the water-clear interior. The lower faces are complexly stepped (etched?) and there is minor attached Sphalerite. How the heck did it form? is it a weird rounded version of the "corner stalks" we sometimes saw from Elmwood in the 1980s? Beautiful!

Lovely radial spray of gemmy Creedite crystals sitting atop green Fluorite, which provides an excellent and attractive contrast. The Creedites, which are perfectly clear and sharply formed, can reach up to about 1 cm in length as they drape the Fluorite. The asdsociation is VERY VERY UNUSUAL - and when it does occur, its often ugly tufts of fluorite on a creedite cluster, rather than this remarkable perched creedite on a contrasting fluorite. Very attractive and aesthetic.

An exquisite gemmy, transparent, slightly lavender-colored crystal (but more colorless) of extremely unusual nature for the district!!! You seldom see them so glasssy and gemmy ,and water clear, from this mine or region. The Benjamins collected especially fine fluorite miniatures, for both aesthetic quality and as a color suite. This piece had a unique place as one of the few Illinois specimens in the collection. It is admittedly pricey, but it has a quality that is just amazing to me , having grown up out there and never seen anything like this from the district myself even when it was producing

Okorusu fluorites are too darned common - they strip mine the place now, looking for the stuff. However, pieces of THIS QUALITY date to the 1980s and are NOT common at all. Specimens with this fantastic gemminess and multiply-zoned phantoms are few and far between. This one, additionally, is pristine and displays nicely. I would also say that the green hues are better in person, really. It is a PHENOMENAL specimen of the highest quality, bothfor gemminess and for the phantoms, as well as for the pristine condition.

These unbelieveable combos came out in the late 1980s and were promptly sold as AQUAMARINE specimens....for awhile. However, they have retained a high value as phenomenal APATITE specimens, and espeically when in such beautiful combination they are hard to come by today. martin Zinn had the biggest stash of them from this small find, and the pieces such as this that came to market when his collection was dispersed are by far the best on the market in recent years. This is a great piece because it has good fluorite and good quality apatite, but also lots of it - making for wonderful color contrast against the crysatllized matrix loaded with white bertrandite. To this day, these remain one of the most desirable things out of Russia from the 1980s and 1990s.

This is a fine large specimen from the San Antonio Mine; a locality NOT known for great fluorites at all and so all the more rare! The crystals are very gemmy and transparent and exhibit sharp form as if they were carved. This is an extremely fine and significant large specimen for the locale! 11.8 x 8.6 x 4.0 cm

Fluorite, Beryl (Var: Aquamarine) from Chumar Bakhoor, Hunza Valley, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-104085a.jpg]

This specimen features a truly fine pink fluorite, measuring over an inch across, and totally gemmy/transparent, perched next to a complementing pastel-blue aquamarine! What are the odds? And both are sitting on a nice ridge of curving muscovite matrix. This is a very dramatic piece, much more impressive in person where you can see the gemminess of each crystal side by side. The fluorite is so microfaceted with natural steps, like a gem, that is just doesn't look as gemmy and fine here as it does in real life because of all the reflections bouncing through this clear crystal. Comes with custom base. 8.4 x 7.5 x 6.0 cm
