WOW! This specimen is simply awesome in quality for this historic old mine! It is PRISTINE and bright, of a perfection rarely seen in the mineral world. It is NOT a recent piece, either. The crystals are razor sharp and pristine, and clear/gemmy to a degree that you don't see even in the best Dalnegorsk clear fluorite. You can look right through every fluorite cube to the bladed barite beneath, in fact. In the right lighting, angling the piece this way and that, you can easily see iridescent flashes of color in the smaller crystals. The large crystal is 1.2 cm on edge.

This is a cluster of glassy to frosted, translucent to transparent, lavender colored crystals, to 5 cm on an edge. Peripheral contact exists and one edge has minor damage but the major display face and crystals there, are in excellent condition. What is truly remarkable about this fluorite is that, when backlit using halogen lighting (or daylight) , the transparent areas fluoresce an even more intense and deep grape-juice-purple color (shown in lower-right photo, which also overemphasizes internal fractures in the UV light). This is a fairly uncommon locale, and a large crystal for the mine I am told

This is classic oldstyle Boltsburn material, with phantoms and deep purple color combined with huge crystal size - almost certainly pre-1860s from this famous mine. Very lustrous and translucent to transparent, this large, twinned, fluorite exhibits a fine, deep purple color. The larger crystal is multiply phantomed and color zoned. It also exhibits an intensely colored rich purple fluorescence under halogens or daylight. Contact on the back side and a little bit of edge wear make the price lower, but it is still a significant and highly displayable specimen of great impact from this classic old mine. The style and color saturation is distinctly Boltsburn. Sharp phantom lines are evident, and add great appeal when viewed as shown. Additionally, it strongly fluoresces in daylight or UV, oir even just with normal halogen lighting spectra.

This is a most unusual fluorite specimen, from the older fluorspar district of the region in Alston Moor. A green core gives way to color-zoned lavender and purple hues in this glassy and gemmy, equant, penetration twin of fluorite. Two faces have been preferentially coated with a druse of siderite. When backlit with a quartz halogen lamp the specimen explodes with neon, rich fluorite colors . Under the ultraviolet light or in sunlight the color is even more a deep rich grape-juice purple color. An old specimen probably from prior to the 1870s, this was long in the Ralph Sutcliffe collection - sold in 1991 to the Greenbanks.

Found in 1987 by miners Peter and Robert Rutherford, this matrix fluorite specimen is highlighted by many, equant glassy and gemmy, penetration twins of light-purple fluorite. The glassy lustre is extremely fine, as with may from this mine. The twins average 1.3 cm across and are aesthetically arranged over the length and breadth of the specimen. When backlit by a quartz halogen lamp, UV, or daylight,, the crystals are flushed with a rich, deep grape-juice-purple fluorescence . Nearly perfect and mesmerizing, this large specimen is sparkly and glassy like a jewel. HARD TO PHOTOGRAPH - better in person!

Elegantly perched high on a 3-dimensional matrix and with smaller pastel colored fluorite crystals, is a superb penetration twinned cluster of glassy and gemmy fluorite, exhibiting lavender purple color. The twin measures 2 cm in length. The fluorite glows an even richer intense grape-juice-purple under fluorescence with a UV light and , notably for this mine, even in just plain daylight. Collected in 1989 by miner Clive Wilkie, this is an excellent and aesthetic piece that does not break the bank to own. There are also some tiny crystals of sphalerite present on the matrix.

Here is an aesthetic cluster of penetration twinned fluorites. They are glassy and gemmy lavender-colored fluorite crystals, to 2.7 cm on a side. When backlit with a quartz halogen lamp, or just in plain daylight , the twinned crystals glow with a rich purple fluorescence which is the de facto standard of UV fluorescence in fluorite. The large twinned fluorites, are perched atop a galena crystal which sticks out the top of the specimen, and provides contrast. The bottom half of the piece is more opaque fluorite, simply acting as a pedestal for the finer quality top portion (and has some minor damage at the base, though this does not affect display value significantly). Collected in 1996, and Very nice, indeed! Illustrated in the Greenbank Collection book, page 85, is a 2/3-page photo of the top of this specimen. Joe Budd photo (lower left)

This is a gorgeous penetration twin of glassy and gemmy, rich lemon-yellow fluorite. THERE IS NOTHING ELSE LIKE THESE...when seen in person, you can see that Illinois and French yellow fluorites pale in comparison to the limpid twinned crystals of the best Hilton Mine specimens. These came out in a few long and dangerous underground collecting trips undertaken by Greenbank and friends, in 1969-1972. This particular piece was found in about 1970 from the Dow Scar Flats - the left hand side of the horse level, near the pillar area 400 ft. from the portal. It is unusual in that, unlike the other fine Hilton twins in the collection or that we have (rarely) seen, this specimen has a thin blue zone at the terminations of both crystals. This twin is sharp, absolutely limpid, and pristine. It is one of the finest fluorite specimens, to my eyes, from England - and in fact the greenbank collection probably had the finest Hilton suite as they collected many of these personally. For me, to handle this suite was one of the big prizes in getting the collection. Incredible purple fluorescence in daylight or UV is a bonus. This exquisite specimen is pricey, admittedly - but really quite unequaled. Illustrated in the Greenbank Collection book, page 106 (the Joe Budd Photo shown mid-left)

This is a VERY unique and scarce example of purple fluorite from the Rogerley, now world famous for GREEN fluorite. However, in the very early days of the exploration here by a specimen mining company formed by the Greenbanks, and Ralph and Mick Sutcliffe families, Mick Sutcliffe hit one small vein of purple material. This was , by Lindsay's account, the best specimen of the find; and was long kept in Mick's own collection (MS#300) before passing to his brother, and then to Lindsay in 1991. The color here is described on Lindsay's label as "blackberry colored" and indeed, the purple is SO intense, it is darker than the more normal grape juice hues you see from this region. Crystals reach 2 cm and have a shockingly deep color, in normal light and in fluorescent light (or sunlight, which brings out the UV purple glow nicely as well). When we cleaned this specimen and trimmed it down from its original unwieldy size (it had been kept "rough" as it came from the mine all these years!), we found that the large crystal to the left had been repaired - but this in no way visually detracts. The ironstone , contrasting matrix is also unusual, in combination proving this specimen is not just another Frazers Hush purple fluorite, but something more uncommon and atypical. The miners called this the "Sutcliffe vein" but in over 35 years since, no more purples have been found. The locality is today still worked for GREEN fluorites by an inheritor company of this original group.

Limonite stained quartz is the matrix for this unusual cluster of lustrous and translucent, light apple-green fluorite crystals. They reach to to 1.5 cm across in size. Unusually for this district where twinning is so common, none of the fluorite crystals are twinned . We like the fact that most of these crystals are discrete and not intergrown, also unusual for this region's deposits. Under the blacklight, these crystals glow a super purple color. Mined in the mid 1970's. , such specimens are rarely seen on the market today. Illustrated in the Greenbank Collection book, page 96. Joe Budd photo, lower row

A superb, old time, penetration twinned fluorite showing SHARP phantoms! This specimen was mined prior to 1862 as per its BM label (though we were later told it was collected before 1840 and accessed around 1862). It features a large glassy and gemmy, rich lavender-colored crystal, to 5.9 cm on a side, on one side of a disproportional twinning, that exhibits many parallel phantoms. Perfect, except where it was contacted from the earth at the base and rear. Ex BMNH # 34468 and then exchanged out to the Tony Walshaw collection in the early 1980s. It went to Greenbank in 1989. It fluoresces a rich purple. Illustrated in the Greenbank Collection book, page 79 Joe Budd photo, atop

A freaky-lustrous, glassy and gemmy, penetration twin of deep purple fluorite, measuring 1.7 cm on a side, sits atop sphalerite-covered matrix here. The isolation is unusual and highlights the quality and form of the twin, which is among the most gemmy and well-developed we have seen. It has exceptional shallow surface features which make it interesting (and in fact a closeup is shown in "Classic Minerals of Northern England," page 86). The twin also fluoresces a rich, deep purple in daylight or UV lights. From the Frazer's Hush Mine, Weardale; and collected by miner Cliff Wilkie. Joe Budd photo, closeup.

This excellent, recently mined specimen features, several, glassy and gemmy, emerald green, penetration twins to 2.25 cm across. All are perched on a solid limestone matrix. This specimen comes from recent workings at the only mine in England currently being run exclusively (and legally) for specimens, the Rogerley Mine, Weardale as mined by U.K.Mining Ventures. This company, led by American investors, continued the legacy began by the Greenbanks and their partners here in 1975. So, Rogerley pieces are an important part of this collection. This material is super fluorescent, and fluoresces a rich purple color even just in daylight. Illustrated in "Classic Minerals of Northern England," page 94. A large and beautiful specimen - and because they are mined recently, about the only such large and beautiful English material that will not break the bank to own. Buy them now, is my advice, before this too passes....the mine almost shut down and only kept going by a lucky find at the end of the last season.

I think that the yellow fluorites from the Hilton Mine are the world's finest for intensity and lustre combined, with apologies to Illinois. In this case limestone is the matrix for a plate of penetration-twinned, glassy and gemmy, golden-honey colored crystals to 2 cm across. This was one of the larger and finer specimens mined in underground expeditions by the Greenbanks and their friends over several expeditions into these old workings in the early 1970s and late 1960s. It comes from a cavity in the Dow Scar Vein, 200 yards from the portal of the Hilton Mine. Collected in 1970 by Lindsay Greenbank. For the size and condition, this is a remarkable plate of fluorites.

A rare locality piece with unusual color! The matrix is covered by sharp penetration twins of lustrous and translucent-transparent fluorite crystals, to 2.9 cm across. These feature a light yellow core and colorless terminations. One or two crystals exhibit minor damage but this does not detract from the specimen, which is large and significant overall for this locality and the unusual color for the district. The specimen fluoresces a rich purple color. Found circa 2002.
