This glassy crystal is positively as clear as gemmy as a fluorite can be, from anywhere; I would call it water-clear except for the slight, pretty lavender tone which permeates it. It sits perfectly arranged on a field of barite that slopes forward, with three small accenting crystals. You can actually see a phantom line just inside the surface, as well. There is a minute contact on the front upper corner and a ding on the back corner, but it is barely visible to the naked eye and is at any rate on the BACK corner. 4.1 x 3.7 x 2.5 cm
One of two specimens from this new find in this auction, of a very different nature from the other one. This is a single HUGE xl (5.5 cm) crystal that is absolutely glassy through the middle, with the characteristic "cut glass" modifications on the face that make them so distinctive. Almost every specimen from this find tends to be heavily contacted - it is just part of how they have to be removed from the matrix - but this big crystal (intergrown with a smaller one) is complete on all four sides, with damage limited to the bottom where it was contacted and some edge wear on the top termination. 8.9 x 5.7 x 5.4 cm
Lustrous, cream-colored barite clusters set off against a matrix covered with small purple fluorites - a large, elegant barite specimen that is not common from China. In fact, we have not seen much of this material at all. 16.5 x 9.7 x 6.0 cm
A large plate of deep pink crystals to 2.5 cm, unusually good for the find in richness of color (it has a deeper purple hue than most which tend towards magenta or red). No damage! 14.9 x 11.8 x 3.0 cm
11.0 x 8.0 x 3.4 cm. This Chinese fluorite find has to be one of the most exciting of the past five years - large plates of razor-sharp octahedrons with unique purple and green tones, in contrasting stark white quartz. The mining has stopped now - any specimens you see are from existing stock. The crystals on this sculptural cabinet plate measure to 2.5 cm.
3.5 x 3.5 x 3.3 cm. Some of the most classic fluorites for all of the U.S. came from the historic Sunnyside mine in southwestern Colorado. This is an excellent example of a sharp, translucent, pastel-green octahedron richly sprinkled with tiny rhodochrosites. The two primary faces with the rhodochrosites are lightly frosted, while the third face with no rhodochrosites is glassy and lustrous. Ex. John Ydren Collection. Excellent purple fluorescence.
7.5 x 5.8 x 5.8 cm. A large, fine, 3.5 across rhodochrosite rhomb with excellent, cherry-red color and lustre rests atop this excellent specimen from recent Chinese finds. This large crystal sits on a quartz matrix with needle quartz and is nicely accented by smaller rhodochrosite crystals, purple fluorite and sparkly pyrite microcrystals.
8.8 x 7.4 x 5.5 cm. A striking fluorite cube fully covered with pearlescent, flattened calcite rhombs and sparkly, iridescent pyrite microcrystals from recent finds at the well-known El Hammam Mine of Morocco. The translucent fluorite is sea-green with a purple exterior. Outstanding purple fluorescence on the fluorite and orange fluorescence on the calcite. This is unusual material that came out a few years ago.
A SUPERB CABINET plate of frosted, translucent sea-green fluorite octohedrons from the XiangHua Pu Mine of China. Trivial damage near the termination of one of the large octohedrons is barely noticeable. THESE CRYSTALS MEASURE TO A WHOPPING 2 INCHES (5 cm) IN SIZE !!!! NOT a wimpy fluorite....and is quite dramatic! 13.2 x 10.4 x 5.0 cm
5.5 x 4.0 x 2.4 cm. An aesthetic and fine Elmwood specimen of pristine, lustrous, translucent, color-zoned, purple fluorite cubes set on matrix. The lightly frosted cubes rest on a sliver of quartz matrix covered with tan dolomite crystals. Classic material from this famous and now-closed mine.
16 x 9.8 x 2.1 cm. This intricate, large cabinet fluorite plate from the Huangshaping deposit features sharp glassy gemmy crystals with sharp inclusions oriented in hoppered phantom cubes within the crystal. The back of the piece can be seen clearly through crystals wherever inclusions are absent. The inclusions are mostly white material (dolomite?). An amber calcite druse covers the back and a few similarly oriented faces on the display side.
7.3 x 4.7 x 3.8 cm. A euhedral, sharp, colorless/white Quartz crystal hosts light green, gemmy, complex crystals of Fluorite from the Huanzala mine in Peru. This piece is from the Richard Kosnar collection and was found in the 1980s.
6.9 x 3.8 x 3.3 cm. A classic Fluorite specimen from the Elmwood mine in Tennessee. It features several sharp, lustrous, gem/gemmy, deep purple, cubic crystals measuring up to 7 mm on contrasting deep reddish-brown Sphalerite matrix. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.
6.1 x 3.3 x 2.1 cm. Richard Kosnar mined the Sweet Home for a few years during the late 1970's and managed to collect some excellent Rhodochrosite specimens. This piece is from one of the last pockets that Rich opened before he was done at the mine. The Rhodochrosite crystals on this specimen have good red color with excellent sharpness and gemminess. They are associated with minor cubic purple Fluorite on thin "needle" Quartz crystals on sulfide matrix. The largest Rhodochrosite crystal measures 1.6 cm across. This mine is now completely defunct, and will never produce these world class Rhodochrosite specimens again. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.
A beautiful cluster of water-clear, transparent and lustrous fluorite cubes to 1.7 cm with outstanding purple phantoms from the famous Shangbao Mine of China. 7.1 x 5.3 x 3.7 cm
