Ettringite from N'Chwaning Mines, Kuruman, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa [db_pics/mdpics/MD-279112a.jpg]

6 x 1.2 x 1 cm. This is a single, superb, complete crystal from this new pocket. It exemplifies the qualities of this find: translucency, shimmering surface lustre, and unusual tapering form. It has a pastel lemon-yellow color. It is hard to explain or convey in pictures, but there is a certain ethereal quality to these specimens that makes the crystals look "soft" and unusual compared to most other large crystalline species. And, this is a rather large example for this species.

4.5 x 3.3 x 3 cm. This unique specimen is one of my favorites of the lot, so unlike anything else. An elegant and unusual cluster, quite unlike any other example of the species I have seen from previous finds in its geometry as well as in the qualities of the crystals. The larger crystal is doubly-terminated and 4.5 cm long, over 1 cm thick. 5 x 2.3 x 2 cm. This is a single, robust crystal from this new pocket. 6.1 x 2.6 x 2.4 cm. This is a single, robust, elongated crystal from this new pocket. It is nicely perched on just a small shard of matrix that serves to stand it up vertically. The photo makes it look foreshortened in order to show the termination well. In person, it is rather more vertical in appearance.

4.1 x 3.6 x 2.4 cm. A bizarre, striking miniature. It sits flat on its own, and is complete-all-around except only a slight contact of attached matrix in back. It almost "glows" it is so oddly pastel and translucent. It exemplifies the qualities of this find: translucency, shimmering surface lustre, and unusual tapering form. It has a pastel lemon-yellow color. 4 x 4 x 2.5 cm. This fine miniature has crossing crystals, the largest 3.6 cm long, arranged like a bowtie at the front of a knob of matrix. The matrix is coated by a rolling carpet of soft white oyelite, and micro-hausmannites. The crystals have good lemon yellow color, translucency, and shimmering surface lustre.

5.6 x 2 x 1.7 cm. This unusual elongated crystal specimen appears to consist of a white charlesite crystal with an outer layer of powdery-lemon-yellow ettringite atop, from what I am given to understand about how these species form in a related series. The outer layer of colored ettringite is very thin, less than 1 mm, and most of this crystal is therefore clear and colorless. It is slightly etched and matte-finish. I am sure all in this pocket are zoned in some degree to charlesite and/or sturmanite but this one is distinctly different, with the totally clear core showing so well. Charlesite is a close relative of sturmanite and ettringite, and my understanding is that most crystals of either of the two yellow and more common species are actually zoned, and are thus partial charlesite. However, this crystal seems to have a pure, clear core which I suspect is charlesite, perhaps pure (not analysed). Unusual, in any case.

5.5 x 4 x 4 cm. A sharp 2.6 cm long, doubly-terminated crystal sits atop this richly covered matrix knob, overhanging a carpet of sparkling micro-hausmannite crystals. Although not large for the pocket, this is a good matrix ettringite piece of unusual contrast, and one of few matrix miniatures from the find.

7 x 3.5 x 2.8 cm. This is an elegant, starkly dramatic single crystal of 6 cm length shooting up from a perfectly trimmed bit of accenting matrix that serves as a pedestal. The matrix is a thin plate of manganese gossan covered on one side by a rolling carpet of soft oyelite; and on the other by a brilliantly sparkling layer of micro-hausmannite crystals. It has a wonderful and unusual (compared to other species) lemony-yellow color, slightly pastel but not pale at all. It is hard to explain or convey in pictures, but there is a certain ethereal quality to these specimens that makes the crystals look "soft" and unusual compared to most other large crystalline species. And, this is a rather large example for this species. Remarkably, it is complete-all-around.

6.4 x 4 x 2.8 cm. A robust crystal of approximately 3.4 x 2 x 2 cm, sits snugly atop a soft oyelite-covered matrix. Little accent crystals are abundant on the surface, too, of this very 3-dimensional matrix piece.

5 x 2.6 x 1.2 cm. This is a very aesthetic, freestanding cluster of several crystals, with an accent of stark black hausmannite in the middle. A superb miniature featuring soft lemon-yellow color, translucency, and a good surface lustre for this species.

4.1 x 3.2 x 3 cm. A sharp small miniature specimen, featuring a doubly-terminated crystal to 2.5 cm. A superb miniature featuring soft lemon-yellow color, translucency, and a good surface lustre for this species. Overall very aesthetic, as the crystals are perched on soft oyelite-covered matrix.

4.5 x 2.6 x 1.2 cm. This checkmark-shaped specimen is a cluster of two complete, pristine crystals (to 4 cm), attached at their base. I have taken the measurement as shown in the photo of it shaped like a "checkmark," to be clear. It is a really elegant and unusual piece, overall. A superb miniature featuring soft lemon-yellow color, translucency, and a good surface lustre for this species.
