3.9 x 1.7 x 0.9 cm. A nice, 3.9 cm tall crystal: it is lemon yellow, translucent, and complete all around save a small contact near the base in rear, overall an excellent example of this style and pocket.

Sturmanite, Ettringite from N'Chwaning Mines, Kuruman, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa [db_pics/mdpics/MD-38536a.jpg]

A brilliantly yellow, lemon-colored, nearly-2-cm crystal is perched atop a knoll of matrix. The large crystal is sturmanite, and the smaller yellow specks in the matrix are probably ettringite - though often the same crystal may host both species in a transitional mix and its hard to say for sure without proper analysis. Surpassingly aesthetic! These came from a small series of finds, now some 20 years ago, and have not been found in this quality since. 4.9 x 4 x 3.6 cm

A rich specimen of gemmy, bright yellow ettringite crystals scattered liberally across the matrix. The pic is a bit overexposed and makes them look a bit washed out, but in person they are quite a pretty yellow , with nice luster and much more gemminess than the pics show. 9.4 x 6.4 x 3.4 cm

Ettringite from N'Chwaning Mines, Kuruman, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa [db_pics/mdpics/MD-43643a.jpg]

A stunning, lemon yellow, COMPLETE floater crystal of the rare species ettringite, most probably from the best finds for the species yet in the early 1980s. The crystal is complete all ath eway around and has just a small attachment of calcite at its base, which acts like a natural kickstand to help prop it up if so desired. Specimens of this quality, undamged, and with this color...they are vanishingly few and far between! 3.5 x 1.8 x 1.4 cm

A SUPERB, LARGE and glassy yellow-brown crystal that exhibits all three members of the solid solution series of sturmanite, ettringite and charlesite from the famous Nchwaning II Mine. This undamaged crystal has sturmanite and charlesite on the outside and ettringite on the inside of the crystal. It has a few stepped growth elements on teh edges that show one internal member of the series, charlesite, under the sturmanite coating (those spots are not damage). The backlit photo highlights the translucency and yellow-cored interior composed of the lemon-yellow ettringite. 5.4 x 2.4 x 1.7 cm

There was a now-famous pocket of what most people I know who saw them consider the best hematites found to date, hit sometime in 2006-2007 and "buried" until 2009 when they came to market. The hematite is razor sharp and has a finish like a jet-black mirror, if you can imagine that effect. It is so reflective, you can use it as a mirror in a literal sense; and it is admittedly "black" in color but yet not black in a way that eats up the light going into it. They just, crystal for crystal, outshine other hematites with but a few exceptions. So far as I knew, they had all been dispersed at and after Tucson of 2009. I believe I have seen most of the lot, and it contained pieces that reached larger size but not with such aesthetics. This particular piece was a hold-back, kept in a private collection by one of the sources. It is one of only a handful of specimens we know of which combined the lustrous, mirror-finish hematite with yellow ettringite association. A coating of small jet-black crystals of hausmannite adds contrast, and texture, to the piece overall. The central hematite crystal measures nearly 2 inches across and sits accented by a bowtie of chalk-yellow ettringites. I think over the long run, given how much hematite is out there on the market from other locales and how stunning these few pieces are, they will command a lot more respect in the fullness of time. So far as I know, all the previous major pieces are now sold and dispersed too.Joe Budd photos
