5.8 x 0.6 x 0.3 cm. A very old epidote crystal, extremely GEMMY and transparent, from Switzerland: classic in form but large in size! Ex. American Museum of Natural History, Clarence Bement collection, donated in 1910.

3.3 x 1.8 x 1.6 cm. A sharp OLD epidote crystal from Baja California, that came to us with an old Schneiders Minerals (California) label. You see plenty of epidotes around from Prince of Wales Island and the Near East, but these old timers are not around anymore. This crystal is really a nice one, too - a compound crystal with stacked terminations, in superb condition. Ex. John Ydren collection.

3.6 x 3.3 x 2.4 cm. Prince of Wales Island is an awful place to collect minerals - bitterly cold, windy, rocky and nasty - but some intrepid collectors have gone there to search for these large, chunky, sharp and wonderful crystals of epidote. Despite a couple of areas of damage, this one has beautiful form, good size and great sharp faces. Collection of French dealer in Brazilian minerals, Michel Jactat.

7.5 x 5.3 x 3.7 cm. A very showy and large epidote crystal from the famous Green Monster Mountain on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. This highly lustrous and beautifully striated, dark olive-green crystal is nicely accented by smaller epidotes and needle quartz crystals. This is a large and very highly representative specimen of the species and locality. The termination area is essentially pristine. A couple of broken quartz crystals and the out of sight contacting on the back are certainly not detraction. A major, large epidote from the John Ydren Collection.

Epidote from Afghanistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-158451a.jpg]

6.0 x 5.8 x 4.6 cm. This is an unusual and attractive epidote specimen where the best viewing angle is from the top. All of the pistachio colored, lustrous epidote crystals, to 4.0 cm in length, diverge toward the top of the specimen which shows off the serrated or cog like terminations. From the collection of James E. Moresby White. Ex. Carnegie Museum Collection.

6.5 x 4.8 x 2.4 cm. A stunning, VERY AESTHETIC, OLD-TIME specimen of a 3.1 cm, pristine, smoky quartz crystal centrally located on a adularia/quartz plate COVERED with gemmy, pistachio-green epidote crystals. The quality of both species is very high. The prism faces of the smoky are water-clear and the termination faces are distinctively chloritized. It is nearly doubly terminated! This SUPER old-timer comes from an old European collection, where everything dates to the 1800s. This whole collection had myriad old materials, though I cannot name the owner, and was well known in Europe.

5.0 x 2.4 x 1.4 cm. This is a fine crystal from a lesser-known epidote locality in Baja California, south of the resort town of Ensenada. It is a chunky crystal with multiple terminations, and is actually slightly translucent - you can see flashes of green where light penetrates the lustrous faces. It has some angular natural contacts where it grew against other crystals. From the well-known California collection of Charles Hansen. Incredible locality piece!

Grossular (Var: Hessonite), Epidote from Falin lake, Usseglio, Viù Valley, Lanzo Valley, Sesia-Lanzo zone, Torino Province, Piedmont, Italy [db_pics/mdpics/MD-160211a.jpg]

6.3 x 4.7 x 4.6 cm. When I first saw this labeled as spessartine garnet with vesuvianite, I thought something was odd from the habits and color of the combination. I took it to show a number of European collectors to confirm its oddity, since I had never had a similar specimen before, and the consensus was that this is a superb example of a rare variety of magnesium-rich epidote from a famous find in the 1970s. This is an important locality specimen, but it’s also a superb piece aesthetically for the contrast of crystal forms and colors. The largest Mg-epidote is 3 cm tall and the largest garnet is 2 cm tall, both finely crystallized. While there are some little spots of damage or contact, the major crystals are in good shape and the piece overall presents well enough that two very serious collectors owned it anyways, even without knowing (as I did not!) exactly how rare and desirable the piece was with the full identification now on it. From the Marty Zinn collection to Ed David through purchase.

4.0 x 2.8 x 1.8 cm. A KILLER, doubly terminated, FLOATER epidote crystal from the famous Green Monster Mine on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. One end of this SUPERB crystal has complex, multiple, smokestack-like terminations, while the other end is a single sharp termination. Several areas on this highly lustrous, dark olive-green beauty are partially gemmy and the couple of broken sidecar crystals are certainly not a detraction. The major terminations are pristine. Accompanied by an old Bideaux Minerals label. Ex. George Elling Collection.

4.4 x 4.2 x 1.9 cm. Prince of Wales Island is a very famous locality for fine epidotes - it is a barren and forbidding place to collect, with awful weather - so you have to really want these to go search for them. Anyhow, this is a complex compound crystal has good luster, and is multiply terminated in a series of attractive "peaks" with a light green coating. From the collection of noted California collector Charles Hansen.

5.3 x 2.5 x 2.3 cm. You may have read the article in a recent Min Record about this classic epidote locality - a very unpleasant place to collect, but nevertheless worked for decades for these fine crystals. This is a thick crystal with stacked multiple terminations on both sides, all complete except one small contacted area of the crystal. It has fine luster.

6.2 x 4.7 x 4.3 cm. I have not seen a combo specimen like this before - a pocket of deep green crystals of epidote combined with snow-white balls of prehnite, from Baja California. Another unusual specimen from the collection of noted California collector Charles Hansen. REALLY unusual locality piece!

9.0 x 4.9 x 4.4 cm. Gemmy and lustrous, olive-green epidote crystals to 2.6 cm richly line a vug in green matrix on this OLD-TIME, showy specimen. This old-timer comes from an old European collection, where everything dates to the 1800s. This whole collection had myriad old materials, though I cannot name the owner, and was well known in Europe.

Epidote, Quartz from Xichang Mine, Xichang Co., Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-165824a.jpg]

22.4 x 17.9 x 11.9 cm. A huge, rich specimen from the finds of 2 years ago that mix prismatic crystals of quartz with dense, olive-green crystals of epidote. The quartz crystals here range from clear to mineral-coated, up to 7 cm. This is a large, thin knob that was poking out into the pocket in which it formed, so it is crystallized all around; the contact is only along the bottom.
