Epidote from Harts Ranges (Hartz Ranges), Northern Territory, Australia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-119822a.jpg]

7.3 x 4.6 x 2.8 cm. Not pristine by any means, but a LARGE and hard-to-find Harts Range (Australian) epidote crystal. It is a translucent bottle-green, and looks opaque only because it is so large and thick. It is terminated roughly on one end, and about half of the other termination is intact as well. Good luster on the display face; the rough spots you see there are natural etching rather than damage. This is an old John Albanese (New Jersey) specimen.

3.8 x 2.8 x 2.6 cm. An aesthetic and showy cluster of lustrous, light and dark olive-green epidote crystals to 3.3 cm and partially wrapped in a cloak of soft-to-the-touch, sparkly byssolite needles from a famous Austrian locality - Seebachkar in the Obersulzbach Valley. Ex. Wein Collection.

Epidote from Hachupa (Hashupi), Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-121357a.jpg]

3.8 x 3.2 x 1.2 cm. Epidote is one of the most well known of all the Alpine cleft species in the world, and some of the finest Epidote specimens in the world have been coming out of Pakistan in recent years. These specimens are seemingly identical to the classic Alpine specimens from Europe, and in certain instances, have surpassed the European specimens for quality and gemminess. Some of the most well known Epidote specimens from the Alps are the highly sought after "Faden" specimens. This crystal group exhibits the classic "Faden" (German word for string) form that is well known from this locality. It is a superb, sharp, lustrous, gem/gemmy, golden-green color crystal group with the "Faden" running perpendicular across the b (010) face of the crystals.

Epidote, Clinozoisite from Wadh, Balochistan (Baluchistan), Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-121358a.jpg]

3.1 x 2.6 x 2.1 cm. From the new find in the Fall of 2004. This is a great specimen simultaneously representing two members of the Epidote group. Epidote forms and isomorphic series with Clinozoisite where Epidote is the iron-rich end member and Clinozoisite is the iron-deficient end member. The beauty of this piece is that no analysis is necessary as it is very clear where the Epidote stops and the Clinozoisite begins. This specimen features several, sharp, lustrous, prismatic, translucent, deep pistachio green crystals of Epidote that sharply grade into gemmier, peach/tan color terminations of Clinozoisite. This is a great example of how two individual mineral species can sometimes occur in the same crystal as is often the case in many Tourmaline species. Aside from being a scientific marvel, this is actually a very beautiful specimen.

13 x 10 x 10 cm. A huge, incredibly rich specimen of epidote on matrix, from a locality in China that did not produce these in any great quantity! This specimen is just covered with bands of deep olive-green, super-lustrous crystals, standing out against the starkly contrasting white matrix.

6.5 x 4.8 x 4.7 cm. VERY gemmy and lustrous, reddish brown grossular garnet crystals to 8 mm with distinctive, frosted edges RICHLY cover three sides of VERY UNUSUAL matrix - a large, crude pseudomoph of a big fat epidote crystal. This showy and historical piece is from Eden Mills, Vermont. There are actually very few damaged garnet crystals on this fine specimen and the bit of contacting and the broken ends of the pseudo are certainly not detracting. Henry Minot specimen.

Epidote, Quartz from Balochistan (Baluchistan), Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-133771a.jpg]

4.3 x 3.7 x 3.4 cm. A really cute and showy two-sided specimen of highly lustrous sprays of olive-green epidote with water-clear quartz needles projecting out of the bottom of the epidote. This fine piece is essentially a floater and the one broken epidote spray is barely noticeable and is certainly not a detraction. From a recent small find in Baluchistan, Pakistan.

4.4 x 4.0 x 2.6 cm. A REALLY CUTE and aesthetic, floater, jackstraw cluster of glassy, water-clear quartz crystals partially included with epidote from a recent, small Pakistan find. The neat, DT quartz crystal is 4.0 cm. Only a couple of broken, minor quartz needles on this very showy, complete all-around piece.

6.4 x 6.1 x 4.6 cm. You have seen the combos of prehnite and epidote from Mali, the epidote usually playing a supporting role. In this case, the epidote is the star - two VERY large crystals, extremely rare for the find in this size (in fact, epidote crystals of this size are rare from anywhere!!).

Epidote, Quartz from Jinkouhe, Ebian Co., Leshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-137796a.jpg]

15.2 x 10.8 x 6.9 cm. From an exciting find in China around 2 years ago -- wonderful green epidote crystals on clusters of quartz. I had some of them from the first discovery, but they all sold, so I was thrilled to get my hands on some more from a second large pocket hit there not too long afterwards (many of them even more richly decorated with epidote crystals!). They are all gone now, as far as I know. This is a superb representative of the find, with fine gemmy quartzes beautifully isolated. A good-sized piece as well. Definitely at the very top for this find – this specimen has it all!

5.8 x 5.7 x 3.5 cm. Lustrous, black plates of stilpnomelane to 9 mm are aesthetically grouped together around a contrasting cluster of off-white adularia crystals on matrix richly covered with olive-green epidote crystals on this showy and fine specimen from Switzerland. Stilpnomelane is an uncommon layered silicate, related to mica and chlorite group minerals and this is a very highly representative specimen, with nice association. One end has been sawed to enhance display. Ex. Steve Smale Collection.

Epidote from Hachupa (Hashupi), Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-139674a.jpg]

4.6 x 3.2 x 1.6 cm. It has become increasingly more difficult to obtain top specimens from this locality, especially such fine quality specimens like this one. This particular specimen is a superb, multi-terminated, sharp, lustrous, gem/gemmy, dark amber and golden color crystal group with distinct pleochroism. It’s a very good quality specimen that displays very well, and would fit nicely into any collection. This material is highly prized by collectors for its exceptional form, luster and gemminess, as it resembles the classic Alpine Epidote specimens that sell for top dollar around the world. These pieces are highly coveted by Alpine collectors, and good pieces are next to impossible to obtain from the classic European localities.
