A showy and important CABINET combination piece from the 2003 find at the Cryo-Genie Mine of two indicolite tourmalines to 4.3 cm with glassy, translucent, smoky quartz crystals, purple lepidolite and milky-white cleavelandite. The upper portion of the tourmalines are very gemmy and lustrous and both have matte-finish terminations. Pegmatite pocket tectonics often cause disruption of the contents and thus some breaks in situ, in San Diego in particular. This piece has been expertly repaired once in the midpoint of the larger tourmaline but this is on the backside and you cannot see the line from the display face. this remains important because it is one of few matrix gemmy tourmaline specimens from the mine, and the tourmalines are quite showy as they peek above the matrix to the front. There is minor edge damage to one of the smokies - certainly does not detract from this very showy piece. The base and back have been sawed to enhance display so it sits nicely, just so. This is a VERY RARE San Diego specimen from a short-lived mine! Ex Chris Korpi Collection 12.0 x 8.0 x 7.0 cm
Here we have a very fine miniature size multicolor crystal with unique steep pyramidal terminations, glassy luster and good gemminess. The color is actually a soft green and pink, but they're still radiant. 4.4 x 1.2 x 1.1cm
A beautiful old classic red "Siberite" crystal section from one of the very first localities in the world to produce red Tourmaline. When there were first discovered, there were no specimens coming from Brazil or Nigeria etc and it was some of the most treasured gem material in all of Europe. Although it is not a complete crystal, this piece has great ruby/pink color and excellent gemminess. The old label accompanying this piece says it''s from the Miask deposit in the Ilmen Mountains, but it this area was often confusingly used as a locality for a large number of old Russian gem crystals. 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.3cm
A SUPERB, AESTHETIC and pristine, doubly terminated, light sea-green, "rabbit-ears" tourmaline from Pech, Afghanistan. The gemmy, indicolite-blue zone beneath the termination of one of the crystals really sets this exquisite piece off. The pyramidal terminations are frosted and etched and a couple of cleavelandite blades are embedded in one of the terminations. This is really a cute Pech specimen and the backlit photo highlights the color intensities and indicolite zone gemmyness. 3.7 x 3.6 x 1.8 cm
This large, fabulous elbaite specimen still has the label with it. Tapering cluster of translucent-to-transparent pink crystals, with fine luster, all but one terminated on top. 19.3 x 3.1 x 2.7 cm
A translucent-to-transparent pink elbaite, complete and nicely terminated, with a cluster of light lavender lepidolites adding an accent. 3.2 x 2.3 x 1.8cm
Two terminated, intergrown crystals of deep green tourmaline, accented with a gemmy quartz crystal and a ball of sparkly pyrite. At the unterminated end of the large crystal (where it was removed from the pocket), you can see the deep pink interior, making this what is commonly called a "watermelon" tourmaline. This accompanying card from the Ruggiero collection shows it to have passed to him from Keith Proctor 30 years ago. 5.3 x 3.0 x 2.6cm
A pretty pink and green elbaite, translucent-to-transparent, with a fine termination, accented by white albite. 3.9 x 1.9 x 1.8 cm
Two fine intergrown crystals of tourmaline, both nicely terminated, with pastel pink and green tones. 2.7 x 2.5 x 2.3 cm
A "mushroom" tourmaline from Mogok in a very cute size! 2.2 x 1.9 x 1.7 cm
Jonas Mine tourmalines have gained a special appeal not just for their rarity on the market, famous cranberry color and intense gemminess when at their best (as this one). They are prized for being part of a now-legendary pocket in the late 1970s that yielded a cache of crystals valued today at over $50 million. The story of the discovery of this pocket, which I will not go into here but is readily accessible, is one of the great ones in mineral history. Certainly some of the most sought-after tourmalines in the world after the California bluecaps . . and this is a SUPER miniature! Weighs 7 grams - nicely terminated, good luster and gemmy from top to bottom. Every fine collection should have one! GEMMIER AND BRIGHTER IN PERSON! 5 x 0.7 x 0.7 cm
A thick, gemmy, deep bottle-green tourmaline, complete all around and terminated; a little rough in spots but no damage per se. Beautiful! When backlit, it practically glows! 3.5 x 2.4 x 2.2 cm
A GORGEOUS, gemmy and lustrous, pink elbaite crystal with a narrow, green zone below the termination. This very showy crystal is pristine. 28 grams 4.9 x 2.7 x 1.3 cm
This Paprok elbaite has bright pink and green color, a fine termination, and is gemmy from top to bottom! 3.4 x 1.4 x 0.8 cm
A gemmy, pink and green elbaite from Paprok, with an interesting "twist" - it broke at some point due to pressures in the pocket, and then naturally healed, so that it has a natural bend to it! Fine multi-peaked termination. 4.7 x 1.1 x 0.8 cm
