Lepidolite, Elbaite from Teixerinha mine, Itinga, Jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-236482a.jpg]

4.1 x 2.1 x 1.7 cm. This is a pastel green tourmaline almost completely replaced (pseudomorphed) by brilliantly sparkling, lavender-colored, translucent lepidolite. Complete all around but for a shallow bit of damage to the back of the tourmaline termination. As the tourmaline dissolved away in pocket, the lepidolite crystals grew into the vacant space, preserving the overall form and symmetry. Usually, this replacement (seen most often from old Pederneira mine workings) results in ugly lepidolite with no lustre, and more faithful symmetry of the tourmaline. This way of doing it creates a much more attractive result of a pseudomorph caught in action.

4.3 x 3.1 x 2.0 cm. A very elegant specimen: a slender, doubly-terminated tourmaline hangs off the side of another, with minor associated cleavelandite.

Elbaite, Quartz from Cruzeiro mine, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-236485a.jpg]

16.8 x 11.7 x 7.6 cm. A large and colorful combination piece that is admittedly more notable for the quartz, and the combination itself, than for the quality of the tourmaline. It is interesting, with several styles of tourmaline embedded on a really sparkling, lustrous cluster of quartz (but the termination of the longer tourmaline is damaged, on close inspection). The quartz cluster itself is actually quite nice in person, very 3-dimensional and with a variety of crystal habits present on the one specimen.

5.5 x 1.1 x 0.9 cm. A silky-lustered tourmaline of classic style for this locality, showing solution effects as the crystal dissolved in pocket long after it formed. The color scheme, and stretched out look, is classic for this mine. Weighs 10 grams.

Elbaite from Himalaya Mine (Himalaya pegmatite; Himalaya dikes), Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-236594a.jpg]

6.5 x 2.1 x 1.9 cm. A classic, pristine, bi-colored tourmaline from the Himalaya Mine. The segmented, very slightly bent, gemmy and lustrous tourmaline has variable shades of classic Himalaya "watermelon-pink" and green throughout the length of the crystal. A little pale, but still nice precisely for that reason as the pastel hues are unusual. The primary, pinacoid termination is complex and the sloping termination, with beautiful hints of pink, is broken, but is strongly healed. Weighs 48 grams.

6.4 x 5.5 x 5.5 cm. Two beautiful, gemmy and lustrous, watermelon tourmalines are attached to the side of a fine, glassy euhedral quartz crystal. The larger tourmaline is 3.1 cm. It has superb and classic Pederneira tourmaline color characteristics, with very bright colors. The striking, central core of vivid, watermelon-pink has a thin, outer sheath of green, above a green base. The lustrous cap is a spectacular, teal-blue. The base is broken, but has healed. The bit of cleavelandite below the tourmalines is a nice accent.

4.1 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm. A very nice polychrome single Tourmaline crystal from Stak Nala, Pakistan. This crystal features several colors ranging from a light pink shade on the pyramidal termination, ranging into a thin colorless ("Achroite") zone, then a beautiful blue-green color which gives way to an olive-green color. The piece is rather gemmy and has good luster along the prism faces and the termination, which is not common for this material. From the find in late fall of 2005.

12.7 x 7.7 x 7.5 cm. This is a large pocket piece of feldspar and quartz, with attached cleavelandite as well, that is 760 grams. It features a well-terminated 4.5 cm crystal in the middle of the specimen. The smoky quartz adds a very nice accent, as they sit behind the tourmaline. Ex. Saller Collection. The piece was mined some 20-30 years ago.

Elbaite from Cruzeiro mine, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-236781a.jpg]

9.6 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm. I exchanged this from the well-known gem crystal collection of Dr. Steven Smale, mathematician and mineral collector. It was the largest of this style he still had, from a large find in the 1980s as he recalled. It is 48 grams in size and nearly 4 inches tall. The intense cranberry cap is really striking, coming after a maroon body. A small bit of mica is still embedded in the termination. This is a classic style for the Cruzeiro, but not seen now in some 20 years.

8.7 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm. These classic, so-called pencil tourmalines were found in the late 1980s and have long been considered a special style for the Himalaya. This particular piece was long kept in the display San Diego collection maintained by Bill Larson at his shop, The Collector, in Fallbrook, California. It weighs 8 grams and is doubly-terminated, also absolutely pristine.
