7.1 x 1.5 x 1.3 cm. This is a stunning deep blue tourmaline crystal with interesting color gradients, from one of the most famous mines of the heyday of Brazilian gem crystal mining, probably from the 1970s or perhaps the 1960s. It is complete all around and nearly pristine, with just a very small bit of edge wear. It weighs 29 grams. Ex. George Elling Collection.

Elbaite from Himalaya Mine (Himalaya pegmatite; Himalaya dikes), Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-221348a.jpg]

7.4 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm. This is an elegant, gracefully tapering crystal of 38 grams that features superbly contrasted terminations on either end. From the Bill Larson Collection. He self-collected the specimen in the early 1980s. It is pristine, complete all around, and has excellent lustre and translucency. The uniform color saturation without much gradient is unusual for this mine, where tourmalines tend to be multihued and show color gradations throughout.

Elbaite from Pederneira claim, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-222328a.jpg]

8.3 x 3.8 x 2.0 cm. An aesthetic, gemmy and lustrous, polychrome tourmaline from the Pederneira Mine of Brazil. The green base has a distinctive cranberry-red core, which grades upward to a gorgeous, very gemmy, teal blue. The very sharp and lustrous, lightly etched, pyramidal termination is green. The striking, angled sidecar crystal broke due to pocket forces and then re-healed. The two blades of cleavelandite are a beautiful accent. 40 grams.

8.3 x 2.6 x 2.3 cm. This is a superb and sizeable gem tourmaline crystal spray from Paprok. It has bright green color at the bottom, and a glassy, bright pink, pure gem, "cityscape" complex termination with lustrous faces. The only damage is the broken tip of the angled sidecar crystal at the base. Weighs 60 grams.

6.1 x 1.8 x 1.4 cm. A fine cluster of gemmy, green tourmaline crystals beautifully accented with water-clear smoky quartz crystals from the Pederneira Mine of Brazil. A highlight to this piece is the doubly terminated quartz crystal that is surrounded by three tourmaline terminations. The terminations are all pristine, with one being broken, but healed.

Elbaite, Albite (Var: Cleavelandite) from Pederneira claim, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-223906a.jpg]

5.5 x 5.2 x 4.1 cm. The Pederneira Mine of Brazil has produced an incredible and beautiful variety of tourmalines during its long productive history. This amazing and very aesthetic piece highlights the forces of nature in a pegmatite. The superbly placed, 4.4 cm, gemmy and lustrous, highly striated, teal-green tourmaline crystal was totally sheared in half by pocket forces, but remains attached to the beautifully complimentary, pearlescent, bladed cleavelandite crystals. Close examination of the sheared zone reveals that both halves of tourmaline healed and began renewed growth. The lower section has a raspberry-red, inner core. The pyramidal termination is lightly etched. The contacted watermelon tourmalines in the background, at the top, is a nice accent. A lovely and unusual matrix tourmaline from this renowned locale.

6.0 x 1.9 x 1.4 cm. This superb, gemmy, very transparent crystal is a classic style found in the late 1960s and early 1970s, from the Virgem de Lapa Mine. To this day, these lavender-colored tourmalines remain unique and highly desired, and are very rare. This particular piece was in the Keith Proctor (1980s) and Irv Brown (in the early 1990s) collections. The tourmaline itself is 6 x 1.2 x 0.7 cm.

COMPLETE-ALL-AROUND, GEMMY tourmaline of unusual form because it has such a well-formed termination atop the sceptred lower body. Note also that the sharply terminated prismatic top portion is a riveting deep green and the bottom a definite shade of blue - all in all a quite unusual combination from this classic old mine! 6 x 1.9 x 0.8 cm

WOW! This is one of the truly great afghani tourmaline styles, to me, because it has the best glassy lustre on the sides AND on the termination. Such specimens are much more uncommon than their counterparts with more dull terminations. Undamaged, complete all around, and very gemmy and colorful even with minimal backlighting. 6 x 3 x 2.6 cm

4.4 x 4.2 x 4.0 cm. A gemmy and lustrous, 2.1 cm, vivid pink tourmaline is aesthetically set between two sharp, glassy, smoky quartz crystals. The specimen is very nicely accented by a spray of pearlescent, bladed cleavelandite. Classic material from the Himalaya Mine of California.

3.3 x 3.3 x 1.4 cm. This gemmy, deep blue, 24-gram crystal is from the old-time finds here, probably early 1900s. It glows with good backlighting.

A nice thumbnail example of the kind of tourmaline that made Maine famous in the gem world! This crystal is sharp, GEMMY/transparent, complete all around, and has the classic green color! Note the very characteristic texture on the tourmaline. If the crystal has the texture, it's from Newry! 2.7 x 1.1 x 0.8 cm

5.4 x 3.3 x 3.3 cm. A sharp, well-terminated example of what was once called "siberite" or Russian rubellite, in the 1800s. This crystal is a full, large miniature showing very well the classic steep termination with beveled edges for which this locality is best known. Intensely colored, this is translucent when backlit. Weighs 79 grams.

Elbaite from Himalaya Mine (Himalaya pegmatite; Himalaya dikes), Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-226178a.jpg]

5.2 x 4.7 x 3.2 cm. This is a full miniature, of two crystals of very good translucency and color, that is nearly complete all around 360 degrees. It is, in fact, technically complete - just has a shallow contact on the back face of the large crystal where it was attached to another at one time. The sides are 3-dimensional and complete. Lustre is fairly high for a Himalaya tourmaline, which rarely gets as glassy as Brazilian tourmalines. Weighs 102 grams.
