Tourmaline (Var: Indicolite), Quartz from Santa Rosa mine, Itambacuri, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-206932a.jpg]

10.8 x 5.6 x 3.6 cm. This stark quartz crystal features a superb, gem clean, 5 x 1 x 0.7 cm indicolite hanging off the edge. The tourmaline is gem, not just clean and pretty, but gemmy enough to cut in its entirety. The quartz is complete all around, and doubly-terminated, with a little cloud of sparkling purple lepidolite hanging around the base as well. Matrix gem indicolites are extremely rare. Ex. Steve Smale Collection.

2.4 x 1.5 x 1.4 cm. A fine, gemmy, terminated tourmaline crystal, complete all around, from Namibia. It has really great color, with a pink core inside of a green exterior at the bottom, grading to a teal color, and finally to green at the termination. That is a little natural contact at the edge of the termination on top, with a bit of embedded pink tourmaline. Weighs 16 grams.

6.1 x 1.4 x 1.1 cm. A stunning spray of gem tourmaline from Afghanistan, showing beautiful pastel pink and green tones. Elbaite from Gillette Quarry, Haddam Neck, Haddam, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-207501a.jpg]

2.4 x 0.6 x 0.5 cm. A fine 2-piece set of gem, green pencil tourmalines from the Gillette Quarry at Haddam Neck, Connecticut. The crystals have excellent emerald-green color saturation. One crystal is doubly terminated (uncommon) and you can see where one of the terminations broke, healed and re-grew crooked. Classic Haddam Neck green tourmaline material. 9.18 carats or nearly 2 grams. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection and collected by Gene Vitali in the 1950-60s.

Elbaite, Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) from Himalaya Mine (Himalaya pegmatite; Himalaya dikes), Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-207522a.jpg]

4.5 x 3.8 x 3.1 cm. A superb combination piece from the Himalaya Mine and the Marty Zinn Collection. The gorgeous, gemmy and lustrous, 3.2 cm, polychrome tourmaline is beautifully set in the side of a pristine, complete all-around, doubly terminated, glassy, smoky quartz crystal. A tiny, purple lepidolite is a super accent. The striking tourmaline grades from cranberry-red to classic, watermelon-pink and there is even a narrow, green zone at the other termination. The pinacoidal termination is pristine. Several of the faces on the smoky quartz are contacted and lightly frosted.

5.7 x 4.3 x 4.3 cm. A fine and classic, polychrome tourmaline crystal cluster from Stak Nala, Pakistan. The tourmalines have gorgeous, highly desirable, gemmy pink tips grading downward to black to gemmy green and blue, at the base. The large crystal is partially doubly terminated. The rest of the base is contacted by cleavelandite. The tourmaline cluster is aesthetically wrapped in bladed cleavelandite and nicely accented with a couple of glassy, colorless, sharply terminated quartz crystals. Excellent, older material from the 1980s finds.

Elbaite from Otjua, Karibib District, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-208642a.jpg]

14.8 x 1.7 x 1.5 cm. Most people would never believe this large, gemmy tourmaline could have come from the Otjua Mine. This mine is known for small crystals, small and fat usually, of more polychrome colors with hints of red in the terminations. Although dark without backlighting, it is actually a gorgeous , intense gem green hue when backlit. This makes it quite significant for a Namibian tourmaline - green ones are rare, as are gemmy ones. However, this is from a small , special pocket hit during specimen mining projects around 1990 which were financed by Gene Meieran and Wayne Thompson. Ex. Gene Meieran Collection.

6.2 x 1.4 x 1.2 cm. This is simply a gorgeous polychrome tourmaline from classic 1960s-1970s finds at the Santa Rosa Mine. Obtained in Brazil in the 1970s by Dr. Steve Smale, this is from his collection. The crystal is pristine except for only one tiny nick on a back edge of the termination; glassy and glows with color.

4.8 x 3.6 x 3.1 cm. A fat and chunky, beautiful cranberry-colored tourmaline from Burma, not known for producing prismatic crystals of this size and quality in large numbers. It has a pyramidal termination, but you can see how the faces have been modified through growth anomalies so that you see a bunch of flashing geometric forms as the light hits this glassy termination. Complete all around. Weighs 88 grams.

3.8 x 1.2 x 1.0 cm. A beautiful, gemmy, polychrome tourmaline from the Cruzeiro Mine of Brazil. The lower portion is a beautiful rose-red, an uncommon color for Brazilian tourmalines and grades upward to green, to teal-blue, to dark green. The lower portion of the crystal is a total gem nodule. The pyramidal termination is frosted. Cruzeiro tourmalines of this color and quality came out in the 1960s and 1970s. Ex. Steve Smale Collection. Weighs 9 grams.

Tourmaline (Var: Indicolite) from Pederneira claim, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-209745a.jpg]

13.9 x 1.0 x 0.8 cm. This gorgeous, completely transparent, gem rough quality tourmaline came out around 1999 from a small pocket. I have not seen the mine produce comparable material since this find, and now the mine is closed for all practical purposes for further pegmatite mining after blasting out the current pegmatite on all sides into barren rock. This crystal is pristine, complete, and doubly-terminated. Weighs 24 grams.
