Elbaite from Otjua, Karibib District, Erongo Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-203268a.jpg]

2.7 x 2.0 x 1.8 cm. A fine, gemmy and lustrous polychrome tourmaline from the Otjua pegmatites of Namibia. The doubly terminated, green tourmaline implanted in the termination is a fine accent. The main body grades downward from green to teal blue and the lower core is rose-red. Weighs 15 grams. Material like this probably dates to the 1970s or 80s.

Elbaite, Quartz from Paprok, Nuristan Province (Nurestan; Nooristan), Afghanistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-203908a.jpg]

8.3 x 7.4 x 4.7 cm. A large, superb Paprok combination specimen that is distinguished in many ways. The tourmaline crystal actually started out much, much fatter when it began to grow. You can see the pink part underneath; this is actually the lower termination, measuring 4.5 cm across. The growth of the crystal was interrupted above this - you can now see this as a rough contact "shelf" of matrix and tourmaline at the base of the continuation of the crystal, which continued growth as a gemmy light blue crystal. The upper part of the crystal measures 3.4 cm across the termination in the long direction. One thing that makes this specimen special is that the quartz crystals are doubly-terminated floaters. In fact, the only contact is that point where the growth of the tourmaline crystal was interrupted to form the shelf that you see in the foreground of the gemmy blue continued growth, on the back side of the specimen.

2.1 x 1.5 x 0.7 cm. A fine tourmaline specimen featuring two super-gemmy crystals of light blue-green color, leaning out from one another. Both are terminated, with microcrystals of albite on them.

A glassy, fat, 5 x 4 x 3.5 cm BLUE indicolite sits here perched smugly on a pie-shaped matrix of crystallized cleavelandite - hence the (heatstroke-induced?) nickname given it by the Gochenours upon mining last year. Because of its form, color and lustre, this piece is one of the very best CG tourmalines found to date in over 2 years of active mining, for my tastes and in context with worldwide tourmalines. However, that being said, its even better by County standards because big fat indicolites like this haven't been found in 30 years, since mining at the Stewart produced a few....and those not as glassy. In fact the termination is so glassy you can look right down into it to a considerable depth (which makes the pictures worse than the actual specimen because the light refracts). I was EXTREMELY happy to find that Chris had purchased this piece just before selling his collection to me, as I would have bought it anyhow. 9.2 x 5.3 x 3.5 cm

16.5 x 3.8 x 2.2 cm. This is a superb, old Santa Rosa Mine tourmaline. As you can see, this crystal is very bright and gemmy, with a wonderful green color grading to a pretty teal towards the top, and with superb luster as well. The large sidecar crystal is nicely terminated, just like the main one; only a couple of insignificant sidecars have contacts at the top. Weighs 236 grams.

3.9 x 1.4 x 1.2 cm. A beautiful, gemmy and lustrous "hot" pink tourmaline from the Stewart Mine of California. This is a beautiful, intensely color-saturated pink tourmaline. The pinacoid termination has a nifty ripple look and the sidecar crystal is a nice compliment. Weighs 13 grams. Ex. George Elling Collection.

A classic multicolored Afghan elbaite, of good size and excellent aesthetics. This glassy, translucent crystal with a green cap measures 3.5 x 3.5 x 7 cm and is perched against a small amount of feldspar matrix. It has a wide, glassy termination that is unusually good for such pieces (where the basal term is often dull). Hefty crystal at 156 grams. 7 x 4 x 4 cm

3.5 x 2.8 x 2.5 cm. A beautiful, gemmy and lustrous, doubly terminated, watermelon-pink tourmaline from the Himalaya Mine. The crystal is beautifully accented with purple lepidolite crystals on all sides. The pinacoid termination is super-glassy and gemmy. The other termination is broken, healed and etched. This is a classic color and form for Himalaya tourmaline. Weighs 39 grams.

Quartz, Elbaite from Cruzeiro mine, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-206155a.jpg]

7.5 x 4.3 x 0.7 cm. This is a remarkable quartz specimen, all by itself - even without the little green gemmy "pencil" tourmaline which has grown on its face. This is a floater crystal, with a sharp, complete chisel edge all the way around. The little tourmaline measures 2 cm, and is actually embedded in the face of the quartz crystal - the quartz has grown partially around it. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.

6.2 x 5.9 x 5.4 cm. These tourmalines from Malkhan in Russia have never come out in quantity. The Russian dealers typically bring a few of them to each show, in a range of qualities. The great majority have no matrix. But this one does, which adds quite a bit to the aesthetics; and, it is also quite large: this crystal measures 4 cm across the termination in the long direction. It has a fine, glossy termination - it is lustrous on the sides as well. It is a translucent pink, similar in appearance to many Himalaya tourmalines. The bottom of the specimen is the matrix contact.

12.0 x 7.5 x 6.5 cm. A large, extremely transparent quartz crystal, with silky faces, upon which have grown a number of teal-blue tourmaline crystals (the two main ones, with terminations intact). There is a ding on top of the quartz crystal, but other than that it is in very good shape, and is complete all around. The photo makes it look yellow like citrine, but it is not in person. Large, impressive, and a really unusual specimen for this mine. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.

Elbaite, Albite (Var: Cleavelandite) from Pederneira claim, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil [db_pics/mdpics/MD-206924a.jpg]

17.1 x 8.2 x 4.7 cm. This superb specimen features a 6.5-inch (16cm) crystal standing straight up from a roseate cluster of brilliant, sparkling white cleavelandite blades. They are decorated with sparkling purple lepdiolite, like sugar. The albite is so lustrous and bright, that it is hard to photograph and so is appearing whited out and muted in the photo here. This was mined during the period from 1999-2005 or so. This particular specimen is from the so-called "rocket pocket" and came out around 2000-2001. This mine is now, for all intents, closed and not producing at the moment.
