Elbaite from Dunton Gem Quarry, Newry, Oxford Co., Maine, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-146173a.jpg]

4.0 x 2.4 x 1.6 cm. This is a stunningly colorful crystal with a large amount of gem material inside. It has top color saturation, great lustre, but is just a bit rough on the termination. This is probably an older piece, as it came from a Harvard deaccession some time ago. Despite the slight roughness (both minor damage and some contact zone) at the termination, it displays beautifully and is an excellent representative tourmaline for this classic locality.

2.5 x 1.3 x 1.0 cm. A very nice, gemmy, richly colored thumbnail example from the famous 1970s-era discoveries. The crystal is gem quality and has the locality's classic blue-green color. Pristine termination and complete all around save one vertical contact on a small portion of one back face. Ex. Phil Scalisi Collection.

2.7 x 2.2 x 1.4 cm. A truly classic, steeply tapered crystal! This steep habit is really the most stylized and famous for the mine. The blue-green coloration is also good. This piece went from Fred Pough's collection to Tim Sherburn in 1985, and thence traded to another San Diego area tourmaline collector and on to me. Ex. Fred Pough, Tim Sherburn, Irv Brown Collections.

4.8 x 3.6 x 1.7 cm. A steeply tapered, classic crystal for this locality. The crystal is complete all around and terminated, though with ingrown albite matrix at the left side. It is undamaged save for a small, shallow conchoidal break in the upper-right portion of the front.

5.2 x 5.2 x 3.2 cm. A large, fat, dramatic, colorful specimen like a mountain range, showcasing the steep style and blue-green color characteristic of the finds here of the early 1970s. This is a great display piece, priced a little lower than you might think it should be from the photos because of minute damage to some of the secondary smaller terminations to the left of the major termination. This does not visually detract and in fact the piece is overall one of the showiest old Dunton tourmalines I have seen for sale recently at anything like a fair and moderate price range. Ex. Gene Tribbey Collection.

Tourmaline (Var: Indicolite) from Gillette Quarry, Haddam Neck, Haddam, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-146181a.jpg]

6.7 x 2 x 1.7 cm. This is a very important, historic, crystal with unusually good color and size. It is doubly-terminated, though repaired about the middle. The large, transparent indicolite zone atop is just VERY intense and richly colored, with barely a trace of green. At about the midpoint it grades to a dark forest green hue. The crystal is actually pristine and complete all around, except one repair. It has a small bit of attached matrix at the bottom termination. Such tourmalines from the old Connecticut quarries are highly sought after today and only come up as old collections such as this one are dispersed. Ex. John Albanese & John Albanese, Jr. Collections.

6.4 x 4.9 x 4.5 cm. A huge, thick, fabulous indicolite tourmaline crystal (actually two intergrown crystals) from Brazil. In person, the crystal is a very dark teal blue, and it should be noted that we photographed it under strong light to bring out the color and transparency. This being said - what a crystal! It is complete all around, lustrous as glass, and has a perfect termination (both the smaller and larger crystals do). This chunky crystal measures almost 4.5 cm across the termination in the longer direction! So it has look of real "importance" on a shelf.

3.9 x 1.1 x 0.9 cm. Two things make this Himalaya tourmie really distinctive. First, as you can see, it is UNUSUALLY gemmy for the Himalaya - from top to bottom. And second - it is DOUBLY-TERMINATED - with a fine flat termination on the bottom as shown, and a really weird termination on top.

4.1 x 1.6 x 0.9 cm. The Malkhan Mine has produced, in VERY limited quantities over the years, these superb, gemmy, cranberry-colored tourmalines. This one has fine transparency, a good termination, and good luster. The color becomes more deep and intense towards the termination. You see only a handful of these with two or three Russian dealers at each show - the pockets hit are just very few and not prolific. This crystal weighs 11 grams.

3.1 x 1.4 x 1.4 cm. A gorgeous gem of a tourmaline crystal, DOUBLY-TERMINATED, from the Cruzeiro. Note the bizarre multiple terminations at one end! The other is a typical flat, glassy one. This crystal is gem from top to bottom - with pink at the terminations and a pretty transparent green through the center. Weighs 10 grams.

3.6 x 0.3 x 0.3 cm, 2.9 x 0.3 x 0.3 cm. Two cute tourmaline "pencils", both completely gem quality and terminated, distinguished by having come from the same pocket and having these cool teal tips!

5.7 x 2.7 x 2.4 cm. This is a big, fat, deep pink tourmaline at least half a century old, from the Stewart Mine. It was in the Russell Jones collection (specimen #941). This impressive crystal is complete all around, with no damage or contacts. It has a really glassy termination you can see right into and good luster as well. The crystal has a wonderful pink glow to it! Weighs an impressive 90 grams.
