Tourmaline (Var: Indicolite) from Sauda Mine, Gilgit, Gilgit District, Northern Areas, Pakistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-122837a.jpg]

4.8 x 1.4 x 1.4 cm. This is a DOUBLY-TERMINATED crystal. You think of Gilgit more for its aquamarines than tourmalines, which makes this really special - it is quite a rarity. This fine crystal is nearly opaque through the bottom half, then turning a gorgeous gemmy blue towards the top. A beautiful and highly uncommon specimen for the tourmaline or gem crystal collector! Weighs 19 grams.

2.3 x 0.3 x 0.2 cm. A dark blue tourmaline crystal, terminated, with a lighter-blue tip near the termination -- from the Naylor Rock locality from which it is now VERY difficult to find specimens; a prize thumber for a California collector. Ex. Tim Sherburn Collection.

3.4 x 2.3 x 2.1 cm. A fat, chunky, gemmy tourmaline, dark green, terminated on top (surface is a bit rough but undamaged) and with a strange etched termination on the bottom as well (so it is doubly-terminated). Weighs 33 grams.

16.0 x 9.9 x 6.9 cm. A 4.5 cm GEM crystal of tourmaline, a beautiful light pastel pink color, on a matrix of glittery albite. The tourmaline is a superb compound crystal with all terminations complete and shining with glassy bevels. The crystal stands well out from the matrix and is exposed all around.

17.2 x 11.4 x 9.8 cm. There are HUNDREDS of little jackstraw elbaite tourmaline crystals on this large cleavelandite matrix. They are lustrous, gemmy, a bottle-green color. This was apparently the side of a shallow pocket where the cleavelandite formed in shard-like layers and became the perfect host for the formation of this incredibly rich tangle of little gem crystals.. A unique pocket specimen showing how these things form, and also very pretty. Ex. George Elling Collection.

Elbaite, Quartz, Albite (Var: Cleavelandite) from Little Three Mine (Little 3), Ramona District, San Diego Co., California, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-122953b.jpg]

17.4 x 11.9 x 7.4 cm. A RARE, HUGE matrix tourmaline specimen from the Little 3 Mine in California, dug in teh 1960s or 70s, dear to so many of the local SoCal collectors’ hearts! This spectacular piece came out of the well known San Diego collections of Irv Brown and Chuck Houser. It came originally from Dr. Peter Bancroft, author of Gem & Crystal Treasures, and was a companion piece to a famous large specimen that Dave Wilber had in the 1970s in his displays. The Little 3 is one of the more geologically disrupted pegmatites in San Diego and large specimens are almost unheard of, and pieces of this size tend to come in pieces in situ, by the time we find them. Not surprisingly, it needed a few repairs to put it back together after removal from the pocket (at least 3, but they are not visibly detracting) ; but as you can see, the repairs are clean and it looks the way Mother Nature intended it to. We shot it under strong light so you could see the color in these dark tourmalines. They are just HUGE - measuring over 4 cm across the termination! (The taller one is 6 cm in height.) They sit aesthetically right next to a large, euhedral, translucent quartz crystal, on a carefully-trimmed matrix of bladed cleavelandite.

9.7 x 5.6 x 5.5 cm. A UNIQUE and FACINATING, blue-green indicolite tourmaline on a large quartz crystal from the famous Barra de Salinas Mine of Brazil. Tectonic forces in the pocket broke the tourmaline in half, and the quartz crystal grew around the tourmaline pieces. The tourmaline break healed, so the 3.6 cm main crystal is now doubly terminated! This is a really showy specimen, which reflects earth forces at work. There is some contacting at the quartz termination, but this is such a unique piece, that it is really not detracting. The broken and healed indicolite on the large, sharp quartz crystal is the focal point.

9.6 x 5.3 x 5.0 cm. A DRAMATIC, old-time Himalaya Mine specimen of gemmy and lustrous, pink and green tourmalines with matte-black terminations attractively set in a glassy, translucent, DOUBLY TERMINATED smoky quartz crystal! A couple of snow-white cleavelandite blades are a nice accent. The large tourmaline is 4.5 cm. This is a fine old-timer from the Ralph Potter era of the 1950s or 60s predating modern exploration here. Very beautiful piece illustrating the complexity of how these occur in nature. Ex. George Elling Collection.

A gemmy and lustrous, 3.3 cm, watermelon tourmaline jauntily set on the front of a sharp, tan feldspar crystal from a BRAND NEW LOCALITY and FIND in Brazil - the Teixerinha Mine in Minas Gerais. The tourmaline has a pleasing green color with red core, which is hard to see in the photos with the tan feldspar background.

7.5 x 1.8 x 1.5 cm. Very gemmy and lustrous, parallel-growth, dark green tourmaline crystals with reddish-pink terminations from Otjua, Namibia. The UNRETOUCHED backlit photos highlight the gemminess and intense green color saturation. These came out in the early 1990s, with very few, since. Meieran helped finance a dig there and this was found in their project at the time. This pristine, polychrome beauty is from the Gene Meieran Collection. 37 grams.

4.8 x 2.3 x 1.8 cm. A pristine, gemmy and lustrous, raspberry-red tourmaline crystal accented with a bit of albite on the back from Malkhan, Russia. The upper portion of the crystal is particulary gemmy and the pyramidal termination is simply exceptional.

4.4 x 2.1 x 1.9 cm. A BEAUTIFUL, gemmy and lustrous, pristine, zoned green tourmaline from the famous Himalaya Mine. The bed of glassy, colorless cleavelandite blades at the base is a very nice accent, as is the frosted, matte-finish, black termination. The UNRETOUCHED backlit photo highlights the gemminess and variable green color intensities. This is CLASSIC, OLD-TIME material from the Himalaya. Ex. Ernie Schlichter Collection.
