Emerald-green, gemmy dioptase crystals to 1.1 cm are aesthetically set on calcite matrix on this showy and excellent specimen from an UNCOMMON dioptase locality - the Malpaso Quarry, Cordoba, Argentina. Ex. Dave and Emily Stoudt Collection. Dave worked and lived in Buenos Aires. Seldom on the market.

Dioptase, Shattuckite from Tantara Mine, Shinkolobwe, Central area, Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga (Shaba), Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre) [db_pics/mdpics/MD-158651b.jpg]

7.5 x 7.2 x 6.9 cm. A DRAMATIC, OLD-TIME combination specimen from the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences. Gemmy and lustrous, dark emerald-green dioptase crystals to 1.2 cm aesthetically line multiple vugs in a very 3-dimensional gossan matrix which is nearly covered by sky-blue shattuckite. Shattuckite is a RARE copper silicate and this is REALLY a desirable dioptase/shattuckite combo. This piece was collected by Samuel Gordon on the Fourth Vaux-Academy Mineralogical Expedition in 1929-1930 and comes with the labels! Definitely a HISTORIC specimen from a famous, now abandoned, but less well-known mine in Zaire - the Tantara Mine.

8.1 x 5.0 x 4.3 cm. A showy and excellent Tsumeb specimen of very gemmy, emerald-green dioptase crystals to 5 mm aesthetically scattered as discrete crystals or in groups on a very vuggy gossan matrix beautifully accented by white calcite and a bit of green mottramite. This piece was donated by Bill Severance to the Philadelphia Academy of Sciences in 1980.

3.0 x 2.9 x 1.9 cm. A cluster of lustrous, bright green, glassy crystals of dioptase from the famous Tsumeb locality. The crystals are contacted at the periphery but in good shape in the center of the specimen. They are large, with the largest measuring 1.2 cm across. From the collection of noted California collector Charles Hansen.

10.9 x 6.9 x 4.9 cm. A rare Tsumeb association piece out of the Tsumeb collection of Rob Smith! Here you have these sparkling little bright green crystals of dioptase, sprinkled over a bed of lead-rich (plumboan) calcites. VERY rare to see these two together, indicating a really unusual sequence of solutions that flowed through the pocket in which this piece formed. Of course, anything rare from Tsumeb gets a lot of attention these days.

8.4 x 4.2 x 3.9 cm. What is cool about this Tsumeb dioptase is the association with cerussite, represented by a gemmy jewel of a crystal perched right on the edge of a shallow depression in the matrix; it is a complete "threeling". The dioptase is a druse of sparkly microcrystals that wrap around to the back of the specimen.

6.9 x 4.7 x 4.3 cm. A STRIKING, OLD-TIME specimen from the famous Mammoth-St. Anthony Mine at Tiger, Arizona. Scintillating, dark emerald-green dioptase microcrystals RICHLY fill a vug on BOTH sides of matrix. A SUPER COMPLIMENT are the glassy, yellow wulfenite crystals scattered about. CLASSIC combo material from this famous locality. Ex. John Ydren Collection.

5.0 x 3.4 x 2.9 cm. Isolated, gemmy and lustrous, dark emerald-green dioptase crystals to 1.1 cm are aesthetically scattered on the 3-dimensional matrix of gray calcite on this showy and excellent old-timer from the famous Reneville Mine, Republic Of The Congo. The malachite on the calcite is a nice accent. Comes with an old Wards label from Djoue, another name for Reneville. Dioptase of this quality came out in the 1950s and 60s. Ex Charles Hansen Collection, a noted California collector.

Dioptase, Malachite from Tsumeb Mine (Tsumcorp Mine), Tsumeb, Otjikoto (Oshikoto) Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-162989a.jpg]

8.3 x 6.3 x 6.0 cm. This specimen is not only unusual, it is downright odd. A complete spherical ball of lustrous, dark green malachite, almost 7.0 cm across, formed on a cerussite matrix. Although only small amounts of massive cerussite can be seen, the heft of this specimen makes it likely that the whole core is probably cerussite, inside. Later growth of lustrous and translucent, emerald green dioptase crystals, to nearly 1.0 cm across, ensued. Ex. Charlie Key Collection.
