Dioptase from Tsumeb Mine (Tsumcorp Mine), Tsumeb, Otjikoto (Oshikoto) Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-263200a.jpg]

4.7 x 2.8 x 2.7 cm. When it comes to Dioptase, there is no locality greater or more prolific than Tsumeb for quantity and quality. This specimen exhibits the top emerald-green color (impossible to replicate in photos) that made these specimens so famous. The crystals themselves, despite a few minor "rubs" are in very good condition overall, and even pass light when backlit. They final touch to these sharp, lustrous trigonal crystals is the fact that they are sitting on a mound on classic contrasting white Calcite matrix. Ex. Brian Kosnar Collection.

Dioptase from Kimbedi, Pool Region, Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) [db_pics/mdpics/MD-266433a.jpg]

6.6 x 5.7 x 2.8 cm. Dioptase is known from a few world localities in superb quality specimens, but recently there was a find of new material in the Pool Region of the Congo. The best of these specimens show great color, with larger sized crystals and excellent gemminess. This particular specimen comprises very sharp, highly lustrous, small, rich emerald-green color Dioptase crystals forming a beautiful "green blanket". The largest crystal measures 8 mm and most of the crystals are pristine. This find seemed to be somewhat limited, and hopefully will produce more of this fine quality Dioptase soon.

3.7 x 3.3 x 2.5 cm. Dioptase is known from a few world localities in superb quality specimens, but recently there was a find of new material in the Pool Region of the Congo. The best of these specimens show great color, with larger sized crystals and excellent gemminess. This particular specimen hosts one predominant, sharp, and rather large (2.3 cm) Dioptase crystal associated with a few smaller translucent, rich emerald-green Dioptase crystals forming a very attractive, three-dimensional piece. This find seemed to be somewhat limited, and hopefully will produce more of this fine Dioptase.

Dioptase, Calcite from Tsumeb Mine (Tsumcorp Mine), Tsumeb, Otjikoto (Oshikoto) Region, Namibia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-271415a.jpg]

7.4 x 4.0 x 2.0 cm. Scintillating, very gemmy, emerald-green dioptase crystals richly cover both sides of the sculptural, triangular matrix covered with starkly contrasting white calcite rhombs. Dioptase on calcite is a highly desirable combination from this mine. This is a highly representative example of the species and renowned locale, and the dioptase crystals are really far above average, in gemminess and color, for the locale.

Fine green crystals isolated on a matrix of quartz crystals. Good dioptases from Russia are actually harder to get than those from Tsumeb! 3.9 x 3.9 x 2.8 cm

7 x 5.5 x 4.2 cm. A rich, massive specimen of fibrous Malachite hosting a 2.5 cm wide pocket of Dioptase. This pocket contains numerous Dioptase crystals, the largest if which is a highly lustrous crystal over 1 cm long. The vug extends deep into the piece. A very unusual pocket specimen. Ex. Charlie Key.

5.4 x 3 x 1.7 cm. A striking set of three beautiful Dioptase crystals, surrounded by a dusting of Plancheite, on matrix. The Dioptases have excellent deep green color and superb luster. The largest of the crystals is 1.6 cm. Rarely do you have Dioptase crystals so isolated and so well defined. A terrific, aesthetic specimen. Ex. Charlie Key.

5.2 x 3.7 x 2.3 cm. A truly magnificent specimen consisting of a brilliant and lustrous 1.5 cm Dioptase crystal (terminated at the base if not atop), nestled at the top of an amazingly aesthetic Malachite fan-spray. The fan-spray is complete-all-around and on both sides. A unique specimen...but even more interesting, this is primary malachite, not malachite replacing azurite, which is more common. Ex. Charlie Key.

6.5 x 5.0 x 3.0 cm. Calcite and dioptase specimens are very highly desirable from the Tsumeb Mine. This is a striking and aesthetic combination specimen of the two species. A showy cluster of sharp, glassy calcite rhombs to 1.6 cm have a thin veneer or are included by dioptase microcrystals. Festooned atop the green-tinted calcite rhombs is a sparkling, second generation of sugary calcite crystals, which really add a dramatic effect to this excellent specimen. Very nearly pristine. Ex. Al and Sue Liebetrau Collection.

7.3 x 4.2 x 2.8 cm. Beautiful, gemmy and lustrous, dark emerald-green dioptase crystals to 1.0 cm totally cover the sculptural, curved, gossan crust on this very rich and fine specimen from recent finds at the Kaokoveld area of Namibia. Pristine, except for trivial periphery wear. Highly representative for the species and locale.

6.2 x 5.9 x 3.4 cm. Riveting, highly lustrous, dark emerald-green dioptase crystals fill a very well-placed, 4.6 cm vug atop an aesthetic wedge-shaped matrix on this fine specimen from Tsumeb. The crystals, to 1.3 cm, are very gemmy on the outer 1 mm, then become green-opaque in their interiors. Striking and unusual crystals. The bit of lighter green mottramite or duftite is a nice accent. All of the crystals in the interior of this beautiful cluster are pristine.

4.6 x 3.2 x 2.8 cm. A very nice three-sided combination miniature from the Tsumeb Mine. The mounded piece is totally covered on one side with super-sparkly, gemmy, emerald-green dioptase crystals. The dioptase crystals are nicely discrete on the other side and are beautifully accented by a 6 mm calcite rhomb. This side and the base reveal the silky lustre, pink cobaltoan smithsonite botryoids of the matrix. Two sides are further accented with contrasting pastel-green duftite. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.
