2.5 x 2.5 x 2.3 cm (largest). An old-time collection (1954) of about 102 classic, single Herkimer quartz "diamonds" from Middleville, New York. The sharp, water-clear, quartz crystals range from 2.5 cm to 1 mm in size. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.

Diamond from Crater of Diamonds State Park (Arkansas Diamond Corp. Mine; Mauney Mine; Ozark Mine; Prairie Creek Lamproite), Murfreesboro, Pike Co., Arkansas, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-245196b.jpg]

0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 cm. A very rare, sharp, octahedral diamond from the Crater, now a state park. This specimen comes with a valid certificate showing it was found in 2004 by a visitor to the park. Having taken my kids there, I assure you it is hard labor and for most people, the payoff is nil. A find like this is major and only a few out of 100,000 find something this good per year from the steadily diminishing quantity of diamonds out there to be dug even as visitation and competition increase. This is sharply octahedral, which is uncommon. Most Arkansas diamonds are heavily rounded or broken and re-healed. At .69 carats, this is respectable for the locality. It has volume, depth, clarity, and a nice light brown color to it that makes it really shine.

7.2 x 5.0 x 4.4 cm. A truly exceptional and aesthetic cluster of Herkimer quartz "diamonds". The fabulous, facet-like, 5.0 cm "diamond" has incredible clarity and amazing internal patterns. The crystal gives beautiful internal rainbow refractions, as the photo highlights. The smaller "diamonds" attached to the side look just like jewels. The super diamond rests on a base of very glassy, but more translucent quartz crystals, really setting off the "crown jewel". This is a superb, complete-all-around and pristine specimen. Ex. Leithauser Collection.

0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 cm (largest). A fine 5-piece set of five crystallized diamonds from Zaire. Two crystals are frosted, interpenetrating cubes of different yellow color; the large diamond is a gemmy, yellow, cuboctahedron; and the last two, very gemmy crystals with gorgeous, clove-brown color, appear to be modified octahedrons. The different crystal forms, colors and variable gemminess make for an extremely nice diamond suite. 2.80 carats total weight.

0.8 x 0.8 x 0.7 cm. This transparent, markedly yellow, diamond with excellent luster clearly shows off its octahedral form. It does have some inclusions but this is a large uncut diamond of almost 3 carats (2.93).

2 x 1.7 x 1.6 cm. This diamond crystal is not only large and relatively well-crystallized for an octahedron, but it is from an interesting new locality; and has a definite yellow tint to it. It is complete-all-around, although rough on a few non-display faces with stepped ingrowths. Nevertheless, it is relatively equant and symmetrical, and shows off nicely. Weighs 42.2 carats.

Diamond from Kimberley Mine, Kimberley, Northern Cape Province, South Africa [db_pics/mdpics/MD-251624a.jpg]

1.6 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm. This is one of those few rare diamonds that today can be dated and located to the original Kimberley Mine itself, almost certainly dating to the early 1900s and perhaps further. It went to the Smithsonian in a collection prior to WWI, I am told, and then was traded out to dealer Walt Lidstrom in the 1960s. It stayed with his family in his personal collection of thumbnails and toenails, which they kept long after he passed away, selling only a few years ago. Bill Pinch snagged this one immediately, realizing its scientific and historic importance as it had the valid label and documentation therefore to show it as a Kimberly Mine piece and not just a diamond from the Kimberly Mining Company's many later mines.

Quartz (Var: Herkimer Diamond) from Herkimer Co., New York, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-252554a.jpg]

5.3 x 3.8 x 2.8 cm. A beautiful, naturally faceted, gem-like, smoky quartz Herkimer "diamond" from the Ed David Collection. This water-clear, glassy, crystal is doubly terminated. The primary, sharp termination is exquisite. The other termination is contacted, but has no damage, per se. This specimen is complete-all-around and the anthraxolite inclusions are a very nice accent.

5.4 x 4.8 x 4.0 cm. Matrix Herkimer quartz "diamond" specimens are rare because the crystals commonly break off matrix during collecting, as the matrix is commonly very hard. The sculptural matrix on this fine specimen features sharp, glassy, cut gem-like quartz crystals - two aesthetically set on the top and one "diamond" attractively set on either side of the matrix. The large crystal on top is 2.3 x 2.2 cm. This is a rare, visually impressive, complete-all-around, matrix Herkimer diamond specimen from a much less well-known New York locale - Fonda in Montgomery County. Ex. Bob Sullivan Collection.

Quartz (Var: Herkimer Diamond), Dolomite from Benchmark Quarry, St Johnsville, Montgomery Co., New York, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-258436a.jpg]

9.8 x 7.8 x 6.0 cm. Two large, sharp, very glassy, intergrown, doubly terminated Herkimer Diamond quartz crystals highlighted by an interesting plate of gray dolomite rhombs from the less well-known Benchmark Quarry in St. Johnsville, New York. The myriad of internal crazing and rainbow refractions add real character to this striking piece. The terminations are very sharp. This is an excellent quartz-with-dolomite specimen from this locale from the Ed David Collection. Classic material.

0.5 x 0.5 x 0.4 cm. A lustrous, gemmy, 0.74 carat, transparent, rounded and mostly clean, white diamond from Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas. The crystal was found by Billy Moore in March, 2009 and comes with a Park card. A very nice-sized, displayable specimen. Stones of this size, validated and actually not too ugly, are rare. This park sits on a small and ancient diamond-bearing tube, but the diamonds themselves, mined now for a long time and petering out on top, are hard to find amidst the tonnage.

0.3 x 0.2 x 0.1 cm. A lustrous, gemmy, 0.06 carat, transparent, rounded, octahedral, white diamond from Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas. The crystal was found by noted local collector Claud Dill in March, 2009 and comes with a Park card. A highly representative diamond from this well-known US locale.
