This is an extremely rare, richly covered matrix specimen of twinned cubanites to 1 cm on contrasting calcite matrix. The locality is long since closed and unreachable for colelctors. These ARE the world's best cubanites, and specimens are simply almost impossible to come by now, except for scattered supplies of loose thumbnail crystals. This is one of the best matrix examples I have seen for sale, certainly . It is quite bright and aesthetic, and MUCH BETTER IN PERSON! 5.5 x 3.3 x 1 cm
An extremely bright, metallic, sharply twinned cubanite crystal from his now-closed mine that has produced the BEST OF SPECIES for the mineral. Complete on both sides, and equally good from either! This is a bright and impressive thumbnail! 2 x 1.8 x 0.4 cm
An extremely bright, metallic, sharply twinned cubanite crystal from his now-closed mine that has produced the BEST OF SPECIES for the mineral. Slightly contacted on one back edge, otherwise complete front and sides and top. This is a bright and impressive thumbnail! 1.6 x 1.2 x 0.5 cm
A SUPER thumbnail cluster of lustrous, striated, brass-yellow, cyclically-twinned cubanite crystals nicely perched on a bit of matrix from the famous and now closed Chibougamau mines of Quebec. The mines there produced the worlds finest cubanite specimens and this is classic material. 1.5 x 1.3 x 1.0 cm
This aesthetic specimen features lustrous, bladed, translucent, greenish-yellow crystals of siderite, to 2.5 cm across perched on colorless, lustrous, translucent, crystals of dolomite, to .7 cm across. In addition, there are are brown, metallic, Pyrrhotitecrystals, to .7 cm across and tiny crystals of Cubanite. CLASSIC old Brazil material in very elegant form here! 10.2 x 7.8 x 3.3 cm

Exceptional, LARGE, twinned blade of Cubanite with excellent metallic luster and dark brassy color. These came out in this size only once in all the years in which this mine operated. It is now defunct in any case, and cubanites fro mhere, which set the standard for the species worldwide, are now extremely hard to obtain at any price. Crystals of this size, truly rare on the market (i have seen just a few in the last 5 years). The blade is very thick, with complete striated surfaces along the top and a beautifully striated and lustrous front and back. Theis is a SIGNIFICANT piece!

A hefty ore specimen, with probably tons of material stuck inside it as well as what you see on the outside, judging by the look of it. I think the cubanite (and associated more rare species) fills thin fracture seams within. On the exposed main face, there are dozens of thin, flatlaying cubanite crystals to 7mm in size. I had never seen cubanite from a US locality, before. According to the MINDAT entry on this mine, it produced ore from 1900-1910. Apparently this specimen was exchanged to the Academy by the Smithsonian. I am not sure if the reference on the Smithsonian label indicates this particular piece was referenced in 1958, or just the locality itself, in that article.

A truly remarkable specimen with rich coverage of twinned cubanites, including that wonderful, 1.2 cm cyclic twin sitting front and center, all on crystallized and contrasting calcite matrix! Large cubanite specimens are godawfully rare and the pieces from this mine set the standard. However, good specimens are usually just miniatures or thumbnails - to get crystals of such quality, and so richly, on matrix, is almost unheard of today. Large pieces are even more uncommon. This is a superior specimen, worthy of a museum.
